Strange as the game shows 16GB on Nintendo's site? Might be a hair too large for a 16GB cart (since the actual cart size is a bit smaller than advertised as is with any storage):

Dunno why they didn't just trim the fat ever slightly to fit on a 16GB cart then.

This is going to stress me out a bit until release lol.

At least Automata shouldn't have any problem running off the cart.

occupying 16GB (which the figure on the nintendo website is a provisional size, the one on the pre-download card is the final size) would also require the use of a 32GB cartridge, since the 16GB cartridge does not really reach 16GB (is 14.9012 for a mathematical thing, same as microsd cards, and other storage systems, and 32GB is 29.8023)

Fire Emblem Engage also indicates having a provisional size of 15/16GB on the Nintendo website for various regions, so perhaps it is another game with which the same thing happens. It is something interesting to follow, since by now the cost of 32GB cartridges will have become cheaper than in the past, at the same time that Nintendo's own internal developments are growing more and more in size.

edit. I add, that I just remembered, that Doom Eternal on physical Switch also uses a 32GB cartridge

So what is the combat and gameplay loop like in this game? Looks interesting but always hard for me with action rpgs to nail down if I think I'll like the game or not.

The core combat is similar to that of Bayonetta, with plenty of dodging/parries and simple light/heavy combos, but much more forgiving. Movement is fast, with a speedy run, double jumps, gliding, and additional traversal options. Nier Automata also changes camera angles and gameplay modes every so often so there are side-scrolling and shmup segments.

I find it very enjoyable to play. My main gameplay criticism is that the RPG/stat elements don't add to the game and in fact make the easy and hard difficulties ridiculous (easy makes it virtually impossible to lose whereas on hard you can be doing fine only to get killed in one or two hits in some situations). Normal is really the only way to play.

Sweet, think I'll try it. Bayonetta is another series I want to get in to. Which would you say is better, nier or bayo?

Depends on what you're looking for. Even though they are both action games developed by PG, they're completely opposite in terms of their main focus.

Automata is a narrative game first and foremost. Every element of its design exists as-is to elevate the aesthetics of its story, and that goes for the gameplay as well. At that, it's an absolutely stellar game. Mechanically, it might feel more similar to a musou game than anything else, especially in the eyes of a first-time player. Despite also being made by PG, it's not a game most people will play continuously just to improve their execution.

In Bayonetta's case, the opposite is true. All of its parts were crafted to accomodate the gameplay experience they're going for as best as possible. The narrative in these games exists mainly as a moodsetter and as a way to justify interesting combat scenarios. It's the more mechanically complex game of the two, and it wants to draw people in based on that.

To put it another way: Automata is the kind of game people write essays and lore bibles about, while Bayonetta is the kind of game that makes people want to share that one sick combo they did.

Well. Nice to see a highly wanted game get a really good port.

Tho the amount of people mad about it being a good port is frustrating to see. Kinda wish people would accept some like to certain games on a certain console. Let people be happy

It's currently 88/100 from 8 reviews on metacritic.

I like this description, it pretty much divides most of the games I love into two camps :D

Maybe SE should've given KH to Virtuos.

Which is odd as wasn't that (or the XBO version) by QLOC? They're some of the best port teams in town (or is it around?).
QLOC did the PC Gamepass / Windows Store version iirc. They reported it basically and that one's supposed to be great.

I think Platinum did the Steam port inhouse?

Isn’t the Steam version also infamously really bad?
The new (updated) one is muuuch better than what was on Steam between 2017-2021. It's the updated GamePass/Windows Store version. The OG Automata Steam release was a clusterfuck though, yeah.

PG never do PC ports to my knowledge, they must've really fumbled the ball on their first attempt if that's the case.

Game runs beautifully on Deck, fwiw.

Still going to get it on the Switch, too, haha. Covering all those bases and definitely worth the support of such a fantastic port!

Guys I just need a confirmation that we can access the dlc costumes right from the start (Always hated 2B silly outfit)
Is there any info on that?

You couldn't in the other version and it was so stupid. No idea why Japanese devs still thinks unlocking cool outfits after you 90% completed the game is great idea. Worse, Inti creates sold me a DLC character which I could only access after beating the game on the hardest challenge/difficulty. (Dragon Marked 4 Death)

steam deck owners when they discover that switch owners exist (they didn't think they existed)
It's just amazing we are doing this song and dance again with a Nintendo handheld vs a more powerful competitor. People keep showing their ass in regards to underestimating the appeal of a Nintendo handheld despite more powerful alternatives existing.

So awesome to hear (and see) that's a quality port!

As someone who doesn't have a PS4/5 or an Xbox One/Series, and isn't into PC gaming, ports like are a wonderful thing. I was able to experience the likes of Doom 2016/Eternal, Witcher 3, Hellblade, and many more this way, and Nier looks to be yet another great addition.

Yeah, they may not look or perform on par with stronger hardware, but they don't need to, just like PS4 games never needed to look as good as the maxed out PC version. So long as the core game is still fun to play, that's what matters.

Bring on Thursday!

We’ve seen this song and dance since the Gameboy. There’s a reason nintendo is the only one standing and still a household name

what does it even mean? I can at least get not wanting a game get a port on the switch as some sick console war propaganda against the switch, but being mad that a port is good is just insane. Why would they even care?

Based on the description in the eshop it seems it's only gated by the story, which makes sense in the context of the game as there is one point where you can start to access item shops, so you won't have to wait that much to use them. (Also which character from DM4D?? IIRC you get the oracle after getting any ending, not tied to difficulty and the bandit needed to finish the quests in the dlc, but again is not locked to any difficulty)

Totally this, it's still a good way to experience this game and if you keep your expectations, as long as you have fun it's what matters.

I was planning to get the PS4 version as well in the future but couldn't wait lol.

Played for like an hour and it's really fucking good. Can't wait to play this on a portable.

Whoa, didn't think I'd meet a fellow DM4D player over here 🥳
And yes, I was talking about the bandit. You have to complete about 12 or 13 quests with the final one being like a level 55 one (those are the highest level quests) Way higher lvl than the final story quest. I bought the dlc when I was like Lvl 25 and had to grind for days just to reach the level 45+ and I was still too weak to fight him.

Bayonetta also has this problem too, You want the cool "Old Witch" costume, huh? Well, how about replaying and grinding till you get sick of the game.

As for Nier, I hope it's not like Bayo where even if u can access the shop early in the game, the outfits cost like a million. Thx for info.

My local Walmart broke street date on this, saw it for sale on Friday.

Buuuuut I don't want it so didn't get it. I never see broken street date on a game I'm actually getting lol.

After you all experience the glory of Nier you’ll all have to experience the glory of Astral Chain.
The Switch is lowkey one of the best PlatinumGames machines around. Bayo 1 & 2 (& 3), Astral Chain, W101, Sol Cresta and now Nier. A big chunk of ‘good’ Platinum; arguably just missing Vanquish, Metal Gear Rising, and coughStarFoxZerocough.

Weirdest thing is that Rising was ported to the Shield TV by Nvidia

Maybe after their Valve ports dry up Lightspeed will strike a deal with Konami?
I'm actually also wondering if Lightspeed can/will use their experience from the Portal Switch ports to port Titanfall 2 over (which runs on the same Source engine), but Panic Button might be more fitting as they did Apex Legends and supposedly content from those games are also coming to it? But I'm at a toss up on whether Lightspeed or Panic Button could do the better port as the Portal ports are seemingly THAT good.

How the fuck we don't have Vanquish on Switch yet is beyond me. I'm sure Armature (who did it on PS4 and such) could do it perfectly fine, but honestly I'd rather get the Bayo 1 and 2 Switch team to do it. They did after all just add new subtitles to said ports the other day, so they seemingly can be brought back if needed? However, those were clearly based on their Wii U versions (including Bayo 1), and since Vanquish didn't get a Wii U port, then it wouldn't be as simple maybe.

Yeah I’m definitely grabbing this at launch… just trying to decide if I’m doing a last minute preorder, trying my luck In store or buying digital
