I hope to write more about it later, but my impression is that this game is even better than I anticipated and I am now in full hype mode for its future.
Same here. With it working on my wifi, bring it on. I will still keep playing fall guys on the side but I’m dropping fortnite.

The FOMO I’ve experienced with this series is over

Should I try to play the splatoon 2 campaign before 3?

I don't think it's necessary, really. The 2 plot doesn't have too much bearing on 3. Octo Expansion might, though

The stories have mild interconnectivity, but not much. Not really necessary unless you just want a good campaign (if you factor in Octo expansion)

Might give it a try then. I get to play games again next week so I may play that. At least the campaign. Wonder if the online works on my hotspot.

Either way, officially hyped for 3.

Wish they explained tri turf better. I’m team scissor so I’ve just been on the defending side, but I have no idea what the signals do. Except for me to pick them off as they all group together lol
The ultra signal allows the attackers to drop the Sprinkler of Doom, which is basically a huge sprinkler placed on one of the map's high points and helps in covering turf.

As defender the reason you're protecting it from the attacking teams is because it's something that balances out their numbers disadvantage. It's worth stressing that the Sprinkler only corresponds to the attacking team that collected it, so if I as Team Rock let Team Paper collect it, that's good for us in the sense that Team Scissors will lose ground (both attackers gain more clout and benefit simply from defenders placing last in Tricolor Turf Wars), but it's also bad for us in the sense that Team Paper will now have an advantage in inking turf while we're still stuck with only two teammates and a prayer.

That's also why it spawns in twice, it allows the other attacking team a chance to claim their own to make a comeback.

Got a lot of games in, and went 22-23 on Team Rock (NA). Apparently my playstyle is extremely aggressive because I was often both the top splatter and target lol. Some thoughts:

  • The Splattershot feels so great to use! I really missed having Inkzooka on it, and it's still just as fun as in Splatoon 1. I didn't even touch any other weapons until after the first two hours.
  • The new movement mechanics will definitely take some getting used to, but they were a lot of fun when I was able to make some plays with them.
  • The new weapon types were fun, but I don't see myself using them much after the novelty wears off. Tri-Stringer in particular felt pretty underwhelming, and I'm not sure why I'd want to use it over chargers.
  • The game balance feels pretty good with the weapons available in the Splatfest. Tacticooler is probably broken, but a lot of specials and weapon kits felt powerful.
  • Playing on Museum again felt really nostalgic. I sold my copy of Splatoon 1 after I got 2, so I haven't played on this map in 5 years. Mahi feels a lot more cramped, and I don't really like the stage before it opens up. Mincemeat Metalworks is probably my favorite for the new stages.

I think I'm going to call it there. I'm sore and tired and hungry and my ass hurts. In that order.

Whatever happens, GGs Scissors / Papers peeps

Have my fill of the beta or I guess bored of it since I've always found turf war boring but all the other modes(ranked, Salmon Run) actually fun.

Thoughts:
-No one is using the new movements but that's gonna change when rank comes into play especially with the of the stuff people have been testing out with the rolls cancels or leading into an extra roll with the dualies.
-Bow is pretty useless as a sniper does a better job and more, splatana is pretty sick especially when you're actually up close to do the charged up one shot, also close that move a bit forward when performing the moving when you have your stick forward
-Feels like I'm playing Splatoon 2 in terms of feel, I dunno why everyone is saying it feels smoother/responsive when I'm pretty sure it was tested that they have the same input lag.
-Not a fan of the new maps so fan frankly

Overall multiplayer experience is what I expected. Good but nothing special to write home about.

So good to see Aerosprays are still complete BS when you’re a scrub like me. I’m dead before I even have a clue that someone is behind me ☹️

The dash with an explosion at the end of it special is infuriating. Oh cool, you dodged out of the way? Guess what! You’re still dead!

It’s good to be back but I forgot how chaotic and frustrating this game can be when you are a casual that can’t hit the broadside of a barn. (And have absolutely no general sense of presence)

Had a ton of fun with tricolor. On team yellow (paper?) and picking off red is a ton of fun. Also dig the uneasy alliance with blue - going out of your way to cripple the other two players to ensure your color wins is devilish.

What I'm getting at is that the defenders will always have four players who can ink turf for their team. It's true that defenders will be forced to fight four other players no matter what, but despite being grouped together, the attackers are also technically competing against themselves in the process.

Your initial message at the end made it sound like you'd have to sit out of the splatfest if you want to play in a group of four, which isn't the case. Regular Turf War is always available to play within Splatfest. If you're strictly speaking of wanting to play a group of four in Tricolor as defenders despite being on the losing halftime team, well you can't do that regardless.
Yeah my post was solely about the 4v2v2 mode specifically. If you want to play as a group of four on the four person side to guarantee you’ll play it you must currently sit out until there is a winning team otherwise on the losing side you’ll only play regular turf war.

I did also propose a way they could add the mode permanently using Splatoon 2’s league battle’s pair format.

Made it up to Rock Ruler+1, got a positive win/loss record...I'd say that was a successful Splatfest.

Cannot wait for the full game. Presentation and lots of good touches here and there go a long way with this one, to the point where, although the basic Turf War is pretty iterative, the whole vibe and feeling of the game is quite fresh.

Honestly didn’t even remember these. Looked it up and think it’s going to really be cool to see how the best players break these techniques.

There's a specific one for most damage taken too. Just guessing, but Popular Target might mean opponents were aiming/shooting at you the most?
Oh neat. Yeah maybe collectively you got shot at by each member of the enemy team the most? Like enemy A shot at you 5 times and B 8 times whereas maybe your teammate was shot at 3 times by A and 12 times by B. So in this case you win the award since you got shot by the enemy 5 times from each of them.

Having a lot of fun right now, but I just can't seem to remember to use the new squid roll. Could have just saved me tons of times. Also, the shark special is scary. Gonna take a break now and go have lunch. Keep going, Paper!!!

Yeah it’s Splatoon. And oh boy am I out of practice. Plus I never liked playing Splatoon handheld on the Switch and the Wifi is spotty here, so I was already set to lose but now I’m also getting disconnects and I’m uncomfortable. I’m just going to accept that I suck at this now and will just wait for the full game to come out so I can take my time and dive in.

Enjoying the AUS splatfest, Splatana is fun, Stringer feels kind of awful to me? New stages are good. How do you do the new squid roll thing? I didn't see it in the tutorial

look I'm not saying Nintendo isn't doing their best on the whole Internet thing but I've been thrown out of like a dozen matches for supposed connection issues despite using a LAN adapter

Move fast enough in ink you so you have fast whooshy lines going and then jump backwards or to the sides

I just lost three games of the Tricolor and I still have no idea wtf I'm supposed to do

Can my team of four actually use the thing in the middle or is that just for the other two teams? Do we need to outscore both opposing teams individually or both combined?

Team of four wants to protect the middle at all cost, you are at a huge disadvantage if either side reaches it. It’s supposed to be harder for the team of four.

But it still counts up how much ground I cover, so I need to do some incursions away from the middle to win, no?

Also why are there three colors when this is a 4v4

26-18 finish. Got a couple 10x wins in for scissors, and went 1-1 in 100x (the loss was by a measly 6p, oof).

Stand by my previous statement of the game just being a better Splatoon 2, but god damn Splatoon is fun. Got a few matches with a buddy to close the night and had a blast.

Final impressions, as I said before, are that this game is really just Splatoon 2 with some welcome adjustments and additions. For a three year wait since Splatoon 2 support died down, these sort of changes and additions are more in line with what was expected, so I don't think they're worth going crazy over.

Ultimately, it's a $60 buy in for a new campaign and a 2 year roadmap of new content and Splatfests. If you're willing to engage with the game consistently over that period of time, it's absolutely worth buying. If not, then I don't think there's any reason to pick it up at the moment.

The lobby features are absolutely amazing and make this game a dream to play. I played with my wife pretty much all day, and it was so much fun

Results will be posted 9 and a half hours from now, which is 1 hour after the last region's Splatfest ends.

Team Scissors was ahead at the midpoint in both Europe and the Americas so far.

Pretty much every pro JPN player I follow that's streaming their Splatfest is going scissors except for, like, two and they're paper

Scissors / Big Man have this on lock methinks

Team Scissors is winning at the midpoint in AU/NZ/HK/JP as well. Percentages are basically the same as what I remember from the Americas.

Me and a friend are really having fun with TTW! Although unfortunately if too many ultra signals are gotten, it feels like the defending team is screwed. Next time I am definitely going the "middle" team haha

My bad, I apologize. I had no idea
You can do normal Turf War if you're in the lead, but it's random. I would prefer the ability to just not participate in tri-colors at all.
Splatfest (Pro) is always an option and guarantees no Tricolor Battles, with the caveats of no grouping and tighter matchmaking.
Pretty sure this is backwards, isn't it? Winning teams don't have the option to willingly select Tricolor Turf War. They have to play regular Turf War and get randomly matched into Tricolor. Losing teams can opt in for either, though if you queue for Tricolor it will still match you against either team in a regular Turf War if it can't successfully match three teams.
That's what the game says, but in order for it to work in practice, it's very likely prioritizing Tricolor Battles since it needs a disproportionate amount of participation from the winning team. I definitely had long stretches of Tricolor Battles as team scissors without matching stretches of regular battles.

Selecting Tricolor Battle as a losing team doesn't even guarantee it for you anyway, and I heard Rock members in particular seemed to have a rough time not getting a regular battle. They were likely the more popular losing team.

The ultra signal allows the attackers to drop the Sprinkler of Doom, which is basically a huge sprinkler placed on one of the map's high points and helps in covering turf.

That's also why it spawns in twice, it allows the other attacking team a chance to claim their own to make a comeback.
In my experience as a defender, giving up one signal to each team was the most common outcome. Once one team has one, they end up demanding a ton of attention to fend off, and the other team can often sneak in there and nab the other.

Oh, you're saying wait until halftime to pick a side to guarantee you're on the defending team? That's interesting, and I hadn't even considered that halftime could skew voting. That's an interesting side effect.
