I guess this is my monthly reminder that I absolutely despise Turf War and putting it at night where you can't see anything isn't exactly an improvement.

So good to be back in the Museum map. Sadly my rollers either did not have the special or speed, and the Umbrella that had my usual sub-weapon beacon is not something I'm good at being offensive with, so that didn't work out for me either. But I know I'll be loving this when the correct weapon set up for me is confirmed. I played 4 matches.

One thing that struck me most was how beautifully crisp the image quality seems to be in handheld mode. Such a good-looking game.

Did they remove an Ultra Stamp sound effect or am I imagining things

And can we not clear the testing range anymore?
The game feels much smoother now. Something changed, not sure what but it's awesome.
I don't feel it tbh, it's probably placebo since input lag is the exact same from the tests we've seen

Played a bit. Feels much more polished all around - and more precise compared to 2.
  • UI is delicious. So many lovely little animations, sound effects, and much more tastefully stylish compared to 2.
  • Aiming seems to be less floaty which is a big deal for me.
  • The festival feeling is conveyed so well here. They nailed it, and it's on a larger scale compared to 2.
  • This is a 1080-60 game most of the time - it's very sharp and smooth looking. More and more detailed assets in the maps. Great stuff /richardleadbetter
  • My 8yo son LOVES it from the word go.
Finally I seem to "get" the core gameplay much better here: when in combat, stay in hiding as much as you can and only pop out when you can get a good shot. Loving the paint brush in particular.

I'm in love with Mahi Mahi and the Splatana

Tri-Stringer not holding its charge while swimming kinda kills the hype I had for it

I'm having a blast. It's more polished in every way than Splatoon 2. The 2 new moves are a really cool addition. The city is BIG, it looks like they are planning to expand it? There are a few places that are suspicious. I think the game will have important updates.
I'm so ready for September 9th.

Tri-Stringer is not what I expected. DPS doesn't seem that great and the turf it inks seems comparatively scarce. Really tactical weapon considering it's the main weapon they use in marketing.

The game feels remarkably polished, if you've played your fair share of Splatoon 2 there's definitely a notable smoothness to the feeling of this game.

I just got destroyed by Kiver lmao. I just keep getting matched with pro players recently, like Dude and Wadsm too.

I mean I've played 675 hours of which 135 very recently and I definitely don't feel anything different, and if we can't figure out what makes some people feel an improvement then there probably isn't any /shrug

I can already tell incorporating squid roll into my gameplay is gonna be tough, I keep having to remind myself it's an option
same here! I have pause now and just been thinking about this. Played for more than 3 hours and never seen someone actually use squid roll once. It's kinda tough to master it. Squid surge is easier but not seen anyone using it too.

I hope it's just me being unlucky, but I think I've been killed way more often than usual with Ultra Stamp. Might be even more vulnerable than in S2 but need confirmation

I probably do squid rolls by accident more often than intentionally 🥴

Do you ever get a matchmaking so bad you wonder if your 3 team mates combined age is over 10?

I have a strange bug where my character suddenly starts to walk instead of run even though I am still pushing forward on the joystick. It’s like she slows to a walk for a minute then starts running again. It’s not just in the matches either. I’ll try again later and see if it’s the same.

Despite that…loving it!

Nice, first game I play and I get a communication error. Nintendo's servers absolutely suck.

Update: Disconnected on the 2nd battle as well due to players leaving.

And yet there'll be people defending the servers on this forum.

The game works on a p2p connection, servers don't have anything to do with that.

Are you using a pro controller? That's its version of the drift, and to this day Nintendo hasn't fixed it afaik

I am, but it never occurred to me it could be that as today is the first time I’ve had any kind of issue with it. Thanks for letting me know. I guess it gives me an excuse to buy the new Splatoon version.

Jumped in three matches before Splatfest half-time. Post for ongoing impressions:
  • Angle Shooter is too technical for me. Low ink cost and long range damage are nice, but the high degree of precision required makes me miss bombs.
  • Even after practicing squid rolls yesterday, soon as I hop into an actual battle the old muscle memories take over and squid rolls may as well not exist.
  • The post-battle report cards aren't snappy enough. Let me rage-start the next battle right away!
  • Killer Wail 5.1 seems easy enough to avoid dying to, though I've had one match where two or three on the other side must have had them, and I saw the shape of a possible meta to come where those ugly spirals are Missiles 3.0 and entire teams can't move anywhere for extended periods.
  • Triple Inkstrike is great in concept, and fun to use, but I had trouble landing kills with it, even if there were obvious targets to toss them at, like a tower or a choke point, as well as equally obvious escape routes.
  • Crab is good, reliable and manageable. Feels solid and fair.
  • Picking Stringer on wide open maps was like forcing my team to play 3v4. Painting is atrocious and once an opponent closes to melee range you're deader than on any other range weapon. I still like the idea of the exploding arrows for laying down tactical suppression fire, but you know what's even better for laying down suppression fire? Actually being able to ink contested turf!
  • Wave Breaker is sweet and I want one on versions of all my favorite backliners. Kinda situational in that it's not worth bringing on some maps where the elevation changes don't work out.
  • I miss seeing my sad Inkling and their sad teammates when we lose. The all-winner screen is extra salty, somehow.
  • It occurs to me that not knowing when a triple battle is gonna pop up - and it taking place on a third map - presents a conundrum for picking weapons. Some of the stuff I wanna go with would suck in a 2-players composition.
  • And actually, I think I'm done. All the remaining new specials are on weapons I don't care to try and I'm okay waiting until the full game on if they're on a kit I like.
  • I lied. Tried one more special because the circumstances demanded it. Reefslider is really nice for aggressively rushing down a point, for example one of the signals in a tricolor battle.
All of the above is wrong and bound to be proven wildly off the mark within the span of two weeks or less.

There may be other solutions too if the situation isn't too bad

Didn’t use servers. Right now the splatfest demo also acts like a test fire, a stress test. And it’s certainly getting pressed with users in a very short time.

Other than that, I have zero issues ever with Splatoon P2P. Downside is if someone has a real bad wifi connection, they will disconnect. But that happens rarely to me.

Some impressions after getting to Rock Champion and (probably) stopping for the day:
  • The two new weapons might as well not exist; the bow seems like a worse version of a sniper rifle, and I can't see much usage with the katana either. Turf War is definitely not the best mode for them, though. Either way, it's back to just using Splattershots and their equivalents instead.
  • The game 'feels' really nice to play, and definitely better compared to Splat 2. I can't put a finger on 'why' exactly, so it might just be a placebo, or maybe me just getting better at it.
  • The maps are... OK, but the entire series has been using such a similar design philosophy for its maps that I'd have liked some more variation. The shifting terrain in the resort map is cool, but apart from that there's nothing much to make many of the maps stand out from their counterparts.
  • As someone who physically can't get a LAN cable to my Switch, the connection issues really suck. There's been many times where me and an enemy have been killed at the exact same time, or even after one of us had already died. That's not to mention disconnects.
  • I'm definitely not gud enough at the game to use the new movement abilities well, and that's with them already being fairly situational
  • Launching the game with a single new multiplayer mode, making said mode timed to half of a timed event, and then making it so that you don't even get that mode 100% of the time if you select it sure is... something.
  • Graphically the game is a noticeable improvement over the original 2, though stylistically and aesthetically nothing outside of the hub area (which is great and looks amazing) has stood out for me. I like that it now seems to hold a 1080p image more of the time.
  • Whilst having the test range available during match-making is great, it's disappointing how limiting it is. There should have been more moving targets beyond the ones that just go left and right, and the 'copy' robot should have at least copied your own weapon. I can understand if it wasn't possible, but even a rudimentary AI from the Octoling levels would have been welcome.
  • Also, being able to easily back out of matchmaking after you've started it would be great, and would probably reduce the amount of first-minute quitters from the actual matches.
  • The massive decrease in time it takes for the Equip screen to come up is legit amazing
  • Overall the matchmaking definitely suffers from the same 'get stomped for 5 rounds, win 1-or-2 rounds, get stomped for 5 rounds," issue that I felt Splatoon 2 suffered from immensely, especially in Turf War. Of course this will get better when the game comes out and ranks come in, but it's still annoying. Most games don't feel like, as an individual, I can make 'much' of an impact on whether my team wins or not.
So, yeah. It's... OK. It's a definite improvement over it's predecessor but the game is just the same game as the last one but with a whole bunch of new QoL improvements and gameplay updates. Stuff that'll likely help encourage me to play it more, but I do fear that I'll drop off of the game before it can become truly 'content complete.' I mean, it feels like in terms of new multiplayer stuff I've already seen everything there is to see in this very short demo, and that's not great for me at all. In terms of iterative multiplayer shooter titles I've played in my life, this is definitely the most iterative I've played... and I play CoD every year.

However, the game will likely be a hit among Splatoon fans as a whole. It definitely evolves the series in a good few areas, and as time goes by the various nerfs and buffs made to help balance the formula will be made clear. It'll of course (hopefully) get a bunch of new maps and stuff to make up for a decent-yet-still-lacking number of said things at launch. Despite all that, however, I just can't help but feel that all my concerns surrounding this game have come true.

Still not sure whether I want to keep my pre-order or not, and unfortunately this demo has probably put me more on the "or not," side of that internal debate.
