Exactly. This thinking leads to a lot of stigmas that we should start removing from society (sorry to get on a stump speech but mental health care would be much better if we stopped saying people are mentally unstable for liking certain things).

Haha, I think the only Disneyland in the world with seasons/holidays-appropriate weather is Paris. I've been sweating during Christmas season at Disneyland, WDW and Tokyo and it doesn't feel right.

Aren't we all good at video games, though ? You can't be good at all types of games, but most people have a genre, a subgenre or a specific game they're good at !
 
I'm 4 hours into Half Life Alyx and I can tell already this is one of the best games of all time, but wow do I get nauseous after an hour of playing it.

Posted my reply to this post in the wrong thread, my bad 😅

I think I'm just in a funk after three back to back to back sacrifices in Dead By Daylight, no victories in Fall Guys in over a month, Mario Kart online I usually can't top 4th place, Tetris 99 I've yet to achieve Maximus when I first started playing day one, the only Brick Breaker game I could find on Switch is kinda crap, and games like Portal and Portal 2 feel disingenous to complete just because I already have before over ten years ago 😋

make your initial ability class robust

then use an instance for specifics?

or alternately: just make class extensions for the individual abilities

ie class MyCoolAbility extends Ability

but I’d really aim for most shared properties and methods to exist in the base class

Yeah I have the base class all set up, it's mainly just math and such, with one or more visual effects attached to it. It has all the necessary references for all of the ability code to work.

I can make child classes for each ability (probably like 100+ after all is said and done) or I can make 100+ individual functions within that single base class, where the chosen enum just calls the appropriate function (which sets the visual effect and does all the math and reference communication).

I'm trying to figure out which of these two options is better practice. I think blueprint classes with tons of functions get slow and clunky after a while so it's probably better to do individual child classes.

I don’t know what the equivalent in Unreal Engine is, but there’s something in Unity called a “Scriptable Object”

so I create my base class GrögolBase, which contains the knowledge of things a Grögol could be / types / properties / etc

then, I have a class that’s a Scriptable Object called Grögol, which makes an instance of GrögolBase and has a lot of the math in it for base stats

then, each Grögol Species is an Object, not an individual class — so I just create these new GameObjects that sit there and hold the individual values and weirdnesses, all derived from one single class extension instead of making every possible Grögol Species it’s own class

I am not a good enough coder to know if that helps or not, but ideally abilities would be structured in such a way that the math can be done by one class extension and the instruction for those things can be instances / gameobjects
 
what exactly do the abilities do? if you can split out types of things, that might help too. like a method that takes instance attack and multiplies it by spicy, or takes visibility for party member and drops it to .3

I’m sorry if I’m completely missing the point, I just think that classes for every single one / functions for every single one will end up being frustrating, whereas distilling the types of things they can do might save you some nightmares (or more time for enjoyable nightmares like the lickéd lich!)

UE (with blueprints) has objects called actors. Actors are blueprints that are placeable in a level. For my purposes, the base ability blueprint is an actor, and then the child blueprints are also actors, whose parent class is "Ability Base".

So what would be happening is my character decides to use an ability, and the character blueprint reads which ability was selected via enum, and will spawn the selected ability actor into the level. I'm setting up the abilities to activate immediately when spawned, so for the "melee attack" ability it will immediately read whether the target is in melee range, whether a weapon is equipped, what weapon type it is, what skill governs that weapon type, what the weapon's base damage is, what the character's stats are, and then use all of that to come up with a final weapon damage map which is sent over to the targeted enemy actor blueprint to be fed into their "incoming damage calc" function. Then after the math is done the ability actor will self destruct after a half second or so. It also has a little "swipe" particle effect which activates automatically upon spawning so the half second gives that time to show up before it's destroyed.

Yeah I'm going to try to make some abilities share classes. For instance, I have a fireball ability and a thunderball ability. Both of them spawn balls of stuff, both of them find out if any enemies are within the target range, so all I'd need to do is input the governing skills and damage type, and then the single class will change to either a fireball that does fire damage or a thunderball which does electircal damage.

I can do the same thing with various stat boosting abilities, maybe just make a single "buff" class and "debuff" class.

99.9% of mangaka/Japanese artists started their career doing porn or soft porn because it’s the most profitable category at events like Comiket or in terms of online donations.

The ones you don’t know about it’s either because they started before the internet or used a pen name.

When people write “X used to to hentai” they generally have no clue how the industry works.

I remember the recent case of Tsubasa Yamaguchi for example, that outrage was ridiculous.

PSL next week, huh? Yeah that’s pretty much the official start of fall. I’m not a huge fan of that latte in particular but I do love pretty much everything pumpkin

I’m excited to…checks notes…not have a QB that gives you a chance to win. At least we get out of the impending ridiculously high priced contract coming up and got some picks. Also tired of the back channel attempts to leave, so glad it’s settled. Off the field though, Russ is great. A little too much of a “brand” than a real person in some ways but does a lot of good stuff in the community.

My copy of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Encore just arrived!! I'm about 2 hours in and already loving the game, the characters and story! The game looks great even tho it lacks some AA in some scenes. Persona 5 energy (I know it came before, but P5 is the game I played before lol), great settings and gameplay.

Music is a blast too! The FE orchestral in the beginning, and Reincarnation!!! Damn I love this song ever since the game was re-revealed to Wii U, can't believe I'm finally playing it 7 years after that April Direct!!

Also I think I'mma make a thread on Rusty Deals because I got it physical for REALLY cheap on Shopee? I think people might be interested in getting it for cheaper than eShop and even cheaper than any sale it might enter.

The dog is snoring and I'm reading a good book and the last 2 evenings I managed 5 and a half hours of Xenoblade 3 and I'm back into the groove of it (only 25 hours in total) after my Sunbreak... errr break, I guess.
 
One day I will make this thread where I do not stop gushing about Bloodborne and why I love it more than any other video game, and Fami will not be ready for it.
