I remember being so eager and excited watching TGA 2019 with my best friend, we were CERTAIN BotW2 would show up.

1. It reuses the engine and it's the same game world
2. It's already far along in development
2. TGA gets a lot of media attention and eyeballs
3. Zelda usually has had a history with a big presence on TGA

We weren't too disappointed by the outcome but if you would've told us back then that it would end up being a 2023 release.. hoooo.

I can never play Sea of Thieves because all I can think of when looking at the gorgeous water is how I want to ride a jetski over it

I wanted to preorder Dragon Quest X offline on the jp eshop and, well, there is no page up for the game. Isn't it weird since the game is out in 3 weeks ?!

Underwater levels in Sonic games are no fun.

I’m playing Sonic the Hedgehog, the 3D Classics version on 3DS. Sonic 1 is the first game I ever remember playing, but I’ve never played past Marble Zone. The game is a lot slower than I remember. You absolutely cannot run for long before something kills you. And then you get to Labyrinth Zone, where the water makes you even slower. Thankfully there’s air bubbles pretty much everywhere so there’s not much risk of drowning, but that just makes me wonder why the level is even underwater in the first place.

Anyway so after slogging through all three levels in the zone, dying a bunch and using up my only continue thanks to the cheap placement of spikes and enemies that you often can’t see until you commit to a jump or whatever, I reach Eggman. Only to Game Over immediately because there are no air bubbles during the fight.

I guess I’ll go back to the beginning, and try to play a little better to get more lives and continues.

Side note, the 3DS dpad placement is bad. It makes my hand cramp up after barely any time at all. The 3D effect is nice, but I don’t think that’s enough to offset the hand cramps.

Games I’ve 100%ed:

Mega Man X
Mega Man X2
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Spyro 2 (Didn’t get all the Skill Points, though)
Kirby Super Star
Banjo-Kazooie
Super Mario World
Pokemon Snap

Happy belated birthday, @Sadist! And happy birthday to you as well, @CastletonSnob!

I hope you both have excellent days regardless and get to enjoy the most of them surrounded by friends and loved ones doing what you love most!

I feel like buying a bunch of records and I never actually have time to sit down and listen to them, please talk some sense into me
I have long ago learned that, much like books, buying vinyl and listening to vinyl are two very separate and distinct hobbies.

That being said, I am an enabler and you should buy all the vinyl you can effectively store securely for display!

A game that would fit amazingly on the Nintendo Switch, will now left the Epic Store exclusivity and come to Steam. The announcement will be make in an hour I believe, but I can't tell much about it.

I am officially out of games (or, at least, out of games that I want to re-start from my backlog because I've gone too long without playing them). Anyone got a breezy platformer and/or action game (that isn't kirby) recommendation to get be back into the habit of playing games and be able to look at Sekiro in the eyes without sinking ten billion hours?

Thanks, love you all, happy birthday @CastletonSnob

Shovel Knight

New Super Lucky's Tale
Yooka-Laylee (both of them)
Snake Pass
Blue Fire

Yoku's Island Express
Klonoa
Shovel Knight

Thanks!

I love shovel knight, so I'll keep an eye on the other two. Maybe I'll have to give Klonoa a chance now that it's available on a console I actually own.

I tried NSLT and could never get really into it. It felt way too easy and simple to my taste, and the jumping felt a little off (weird criticism, I know). I have tried the rest and (mostly) loved them! Especially blue fire.

Tangent: I like the original Yooka-Laylee more than the sequel. It's a worse game, but I think that with more polish it could've been excellent, whereas the sequel feels to me like a (more than decent) DKC knock-off. I really look forward to a 3D sequel.

Cross posting from the direct thread. Made a remarkable discovery. My iPad hotspot will let me play switch games online. No clue why I never tested it before.

I managed to get Victini in PokΓ©mon Sword yesterday through my phone's hotspot because I don't have access to the Internet in my new place yet.
I have nat tyoe d on my main wifi so I can’t play games like Mario kart online at all. The hot spot is currently my only way to do so now

Ugh, Saints Row turned out to be a bust. That's too bad, 3 and 4 were among the most fun open worlds I've ever played. I guess experimenting didn't pay off for Volition.

That's one game off my top 10 2022 list. I still anticipate Bayonetta 3 to be the number one for me.

Damn, really? That's disappointing to hear. Volition needs to get its mojo back, and fast.

I wonder how much Covid affected the development of Saints Row but I'm not entirely surprised by the reviews. THQ Nordic puts out decent AA-stuff but you can tell that they have to cut corners here and there.

My only experience with Saints Row was playing the demo for the first one back in 2006 I believe. I remember it being a fairly straight forward GTA clone but it got a lot of press because it was the first next-gen GTA-style game.

Huh. The Metacritic average for this game is terrible and the reviews are all over the place. However, after reading the Polygon one (it got a recommends and I tend to trust them) I kind of really want to try it out.

Reviews are aaaaaall over the place with Saints Row… and my friend bought it, so I should too lol

The series got its own identity in 3rd and 4th games, while still GTA like, they added extra insanity. Best part of them was the over the top characters, gave the series that campy sitcom feeling.

I guess Saints Row will eventually end up in the Game Pass to recoup costs... It'll be the occasion to play it and see if the game is as mediocre as the reviews seem to suggest.

That's a shame, because as you said, 3 and 4 were really good. Especially 3, excellent comedic writing, way funnier and less cringe game than GTA V.

Blistering barnacles, a new Tintin game in more than a decade! And it's an adaptation of one of the best stories: Tintin the Narc.

We have a student in one of my classes with severe anxiety, such that just being the room with us is a big step forward for him, and one of his ways to cope is to play games on his laptop while he listens. We allow this, along with things like fidgets and stim toys, or whatever helps the kids to self-regulate.

Today he was gaming as usual, and the teacher from the school who sits in on our program didn't think he was listening cos he was actively doing something else, but then when it came time for our group discussion, he spoke up briefly in his quiet little voice with a fantastic insight I hadn't even considered. Far from a distraction, it actually helps him to focus and to stay calm enough to handle the classroom setting.

Really goes to show not just how beneficial gaming can be (something my job constantly reminds me of) but that so much of traditional school rules like sitting still, making eye contact, etc is based on neurotypical norms and the neurodiverse kids actually do better in school if they are allowed to move around or game or stim or even not look at the teacher.

I honestly feel like I could write a novel about just how helpful video games can be to neurodiverse people.
I would say those typical rules aren’t even especially helpful for neurotypical folks, either. Those rules mostly exist to get students to perform expected behaviors in expected ways to prepare them for menial labor/mundane employment.

Played a bit of Thymesia and combat is really satisfying. It is a blend of classic Souls combat (more fast paced, probably closest to Bloodborne) and Sekiro elements (mostly the deflecting mechanic) that just feels good and responsive. Unlike in Sekiro, dodging is perfectly viable in this game for a more defensive approach. Deflecting provides a more aggressive risk/reward option.

Overall pretty impressed with the first couple of hours, especially considering this was only developed by a really small studio.
