New SMT V News segment tomorrow night

And threadmarked! Thanks for posting!

These have been great so far, looking forward to seeing what they show off this time. Interesting that they're doing it without a PV shown off beforehand, I wonder if they'll just show one before the breakdown that these segments usually are

Since I'm doing the OT for SMT V I wanted to get some answers from fans of the series on why you enjoy SMT in general.

So if possible could you guys tell me what you like about SMT even if you just played one game in the series. Could you also tell me who you would recommend this game to and why they should try SMT? I just wanted to add this stuff in the OT just so people new to the series could see it.

I might also give a little quick history on the SMT series in the OT as well just to show what kind of legacy it has. It might surprise people how old this franchise really is.
There are a few things I really like about SMT: One, the combat is fantastic (mostly talking SMT4 and 4A here), it's pretty much the most perfect turn-based system I've played. It feels really tactical, almost like a puzzle sometimes in how you have to use buffs and debuffs and know when to do which moves in battle. I also like how a lot of it comes down to teambuilding and having the RIGHT skills in the first place: Some bosses are very difficult, if not almost impossible, if you're not prepared with a good, well-built team. I like how much good team building and planning matters in the games.

Two, the atmosphere. I don't think I've ever played another game that has quite the same atmosphere as SMT4 does, the fantastic cyberpunk/post-apocalyptic mad max mix vibe it has going on is wonderful. I may as well include the music here, too, as the soundtrack is god-tier and such a huge part of why the atmosphere works so well.

Three, the demons themselves. There's just something so badass and cool about getting gods and divine beings and creatures of lore and myth on your team. Who doesn't want to go fuck shit up with an RPG party made up of members like Odin, Metatron, Shiva, Satan, Athena, etc.? And part of it for me (ESPECIALLY the first time I played one of the games) is just seeing all the amazing art, demon designs, lore/history, and wondering "who am I going to be able to fuse next?"

As for why I would recommend SMTV: If you are a fan of dungeon crawlers, turn-based RPGs with excellent battle systems that aren't brain-dead, tactical team-building and planning, and are interested in a world with excellent atmosphere and interesting philosophical roots that feels very unique among JRPGs, you will likely love this game. SMTV in particular will be probably the best entry point into the series, as it's going to be the best-looking, is on a modern console, and has the best and most current quality of life features (I'm assuming). Also: While the series is notorious for being difficult, and I personally love it for that as it's very rewarding for being difficult but fair, DON'T let the difficulty be a barrier for you if you're considering the game. SMTV has many different difficulty options, ranging from very easy/story mode all the way up to hard, and will be able to be enjoyed by anyone with any difficulty preference.

I like its dark apocalyptic atmosphere, its different endings based on your moral choices, the demons have a lot of charm, and the complexity of the battles (not difficulty) and the opportunities they bring for experimentation.

Somehow I find the games like a criticism to religions, specially the Judeo-Christian religion. I mean, if you take these beliefs very seriously, the result is genocide of many innocent people, and thus you need to kill archangels and gods for the sake of humanity. It makes the game even more enjoyable.

I've been thinking about the alignments in SMT in general, and I was thinking it would be nice to add additional endings based in "Neutral-Law" and "Neutral-Chaos", not just Law, Neutral and Chaos. I don't know how many endings are planned in SMT V, so who knows what they are doing.

I've been thinking how this could have been handled in SMT IV. Here are them explained in spoiler section:
  • NOTHINGNESS: everything is destroyed
  • LAW: Tokyo is completely destroyed, those in Mikado who don't follow God are killed
  • Neutral-Law: everyone in Tokyo is brought to Mikado, Tokyo is destroyed
  • NEUTRAL: everyone in Mikado is brought to Tokyo, Mikado is destroyed
  • Neutral-Chaos: everyone in Tokyo is brought to Mikado, Tokyo is not destroyed
  • CHAOS: demons have finally access to Mikado
I don't know how these would have been later brought into the story. I was just thinking that it would have been nice to add the option of bringing every unclean one to Mikado and screw Tokyo.

Probably my ideas are dumb, but I just wanted to talk about this.

I get where you are coming from marmoka, but I feel like only having the extreme options was purposeful in SMTIV. From a more cynical point of view, I'd say they made Law and Chaos so extreme to funnel players into neutral route and make it so the vast majority of players would agree neutral was the "best" ending. However, from a less cynical point of view, I think only having exteme options encourages the player, assuming they engage with the game's ideas, to really think about their beliefs. It makes you really figure out what you consider to be the lesser evil or if one of them is even evil at all. Either way, I don't think having milder options would make the game fit better with what the developers were going for.

SMT NINE (Xbox) had that, it ranged from Law Good to Chaos Evil, basically the DnD alignment system.

Incidentally (I request anyone who does see this to not share it outside this board, I’m hiding this for a reason)

I've never played a SMT game, but I'm interested on this one. When my backlog grows smaller I plan to give it a chance, it looks very good.

Same. I was kinda interested in SMTIV, but Europe got screwed on the release and by the time we got it I'd long since moved on.

Can't wait for this game! SMTV, Danganronpa Decadence, and Advance Wars will mark the end of a pretty great year for the Switch in my book. In the meantime I should really get around to completing my current SMTIII playthrough.

I figure review copies might already be out, since JRPGs typically need more time in advance due to their length, but this week is also possible. The embargo is just for post release streaming I think

This release is coming up quick. I’m pretty excited. I never found the earlier games all that great outside of IV and IVA, but this one looks like it’s taking the good things from all those games as well as some stuff from Tokyo Mirage Sessions so I’m extremely optimistic.

I’ve never played any SMT game - main series, Persona, or otherwise - so this will be my first foray into the series. I’m excited. I’m really hoping it clicks with me since I know people gush about SMT games.

Wow I forgot that it'll be released in early November, we're almost there !
Hope the game plays great on handheld mode, that's my fear with UE4.

I'll be honest, I tried playing Nocturne (on the PS2 proper) to hype myself up this

...And I didn't like it much. 😭 I wanted to so bad.

That said, still super pumped for this.

Ohhh Boy... a new Metroid and now a new SMT game... this is good karma for all the hard timed we had to endure these years.

Just saw the Cleo reveal in the SMT V news segemt.

Yea Atlus knows what they are doing with the DLC lol.

I'm liking the number of options Atlus is adding to SMT V for newer players.

I am so excited for SmT V!!!
It's one of the first few games that made me interested in the Switch! I can't believe it's so close to release now!

I have SmT4 and Apocalypse on DS but I'm ashamed to say I didn't even finish the first one because I just can NOT navigate the map. But I did put quite a few hours into it and I really enjoyed it so I'm not too worried about not enjoying V when it comes out haha.

I'll get back to IV some day.. ahaha.. backlog
