News Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase announced for June 28th

I've seen it mentioned several times today on this site but where are the rumors of a July first party games only direct coming from? Anything from someone reliable or is it just wishful thinking?
Jeff Grubb said that he thinks some kind of mini direct focused on first party games in July is likely, but that was more based on what release dates and stuff he knows needs to be announced rather than him actually having knowledge of another direct.

He also heard the direct would be split up into multiple small directs way back in May I believe. So Grubb is super reliable even with speculation.

Nate talking about giving Astral Chain to Monolith Soft is wild.
huh

That's an interesting idea. Personally don't see it happening for various reasons but as you mention, a co-developed entry could make a lot of sense. Hopefully Monolith would be the one to take a front seat on story/characters and PG would handle the combat side.

In one part it fits, we have heard both rumors of Monolith Soft working on an action game and employees talk about wanting to make one. On the other hand it seems something that would make no sense Astral Chain was N X PG the game plus ‘stealing’ series and giving to other devs isnt something Nintendo does if the original developers still want to make the game. Maybe Nintendo wants to poach Taura and his team and give them a job in Monolith?

I agree that Monolith would give characters a nice story and scenery but at this point wouldn't it be better for them to work on a new IP.

This Mini direct also reminded me that a good deal of media people only play Mario and Zelda games, nothing wrong with that but they should expand their horizons.

Not trying to say he’s an insider just curious what’s everybody’s read on this.

Thoughts @NateDrake? With Grubb just corroborating Metroid Prime is coming this year, Bayonetta 3 and Mario Rabbids having yet to be shown, and the high potential of Fire Emblem, this just doesn’t seem like the right conclusion. They could have all made for a good showcase combined with third parties.

I love GVG, and I've been listening to Derrick for years, but why the heck did he show up to their Partner Showcase predictions saying the Mario Kart DLC could be here?! Are we all just that desperate to finally get more courses? (I know I am)
I actually wouldn’t be surprised if they threw it in there, for some reason

Nate mentions on his podcast today that maybe Nintendo gives Astral chain to Monolith after xenoblade 3. Probably just speculation but who knows.
Maybe as support from the team that also works on Splatoon and Animal Crossing, but Monolith's core teams are crucial to much more important Nintendo series than Astral Chain, I doubt Nintendo would take resources away from Xenoblade or Zelda just for the sake of keeping Astral Chain alive.

Astral Chain 2 with Platinum's battle system and Monolith's level design (semi-open world) would be pretty hype to be honest.

Also echoing this @NateDrake to ask for a final time (I promise😅) where you think/know WWHD+TPHD fit in all this

Monolith has been dying to make a new IP. There was an interview recently where they joked about how nothing they pitch gets greenlighted unless Xeno is attached.

With that in mind, putting Monolith on an IP that was the brain child of a third party developer seems.... Odd.

One thing I shamelessly miss about GAF is the amount of bans that came along with each direct. Nintendo makes people lose there mind on gaming forums.

At the same time, if they offer it and Monolith likes it, I’m all in. Monolith could do wonders with that franchise.

Astral Chains story was a not great to say the least. It’s the first area I hope they’d fix up

This reasoning sounds like it comes from someone who has no memory of any previous Nintendo E3 Directs. Breath of the Wild 2 was the closure for last year and that obviously wasn't coming out in Q4 2021. You can make an argument that Metroid Dread was the big Q4 game but that's not a major seller on the levels other big Nintendo franchises.

With a brand new Pokemon coming out in November and with Splatoon 3 still the deck, Nintendo's end of the year lineup is arguably bigger than it was last years, definitely at least from a sales standpoint.

No offense but Chris Dring should stick to reporting UK sales. I find his commentary to often be fairly rigid and pedestrian in its outlook, colored by personal biases with the unstated implication Nintendo is irrelevant outside of a few games. This shows up here again. When was the last time in the Switch era did Nintendo only had a single game to show at E3.

The implication a BOTW 2 delay meant they had nothing else is baffling. Nintendo has clearly decided to do Twitter drops and separate directs for their announcements like what they just did with XBC3 indepth look direct in place of a direct update reminder trailer and tree house

Monolith Soft X Platinium Games maybe be too much even for Nintendo to control that they dont end up trying to make a 10 year dev game with sub 1M potential

I’ll keep beating the drum that BotW2 won’t get its blowout until Nintendo is ready to talk about and reveal the next system. We will get bread crumbs until then. Nintendo will continually kick BotW2 down the road until Switch 2 is ready.

I don't know the full context of the what and the how, but sure in a bubble monolith working on Astral Chain sounds cool.

Though in a perfect world, Platinum would continue the franchise and Monolith would make their own New IP. But if Monolith is cool with it, then bring it on.

Last E3 direct we went in not knowing what the second half of the year looked like and we got Metroid/Warioware/Advance Wars (which then got delayed anyway)

This year we knew way more about the second half from Nintendo, they didn’t really need a general at this point as the games coming will benefit more from single, focused Directs in the lead up to launch. I just hope they have a good selection of 3rd party games to benefit bringing back a Direct branding that isn’t held it high regard.

yummmmm breadcrumbs

Hey Fam,

I hope I didn't miss any meltdowns today!
Funnily enough I am really excited for tommorow. Really hoping for some fun surprises tomorrow.

It's funny how much more you see the 'we don't even really need a Direct' after it's confirmed that we aren't getting a general than before when it still seems possible.

Nightmare scenario : Nier Automata is just cloud version and Persona is just 3 4 (I want a portable 5 godamnit)

This is true. New Pokemon, Splatoon 3, exclusive Mario + Rabbids - that's a heavy hitting line-up. The narrative that Dring is tapping into comes from Zelda being the Online Hype Machine (and sure, the new one will be an enormous hit). All that being said...

... I personally don't think it's impossible that Nintendo planned to promote Zelda at E3 and that E3 being cancelled led them to change their plans. That doesn't mean they went "oh no, we have nothing!"; more that, without E3 to tie it to, they pushed back promotion for Zelda and are splitting up the rest of the news they wanted to deliver because they no longer have to stick to the E3 schedule.
