I bought The Darkside Detective the other night and played through it yesterday. Overall I enjoyed it, it's a point and click adventure that consists of 6 cases that are fairly short. You also get a few bonus cases when you finish the the 6 main ones, which I appreciated. Guess I'll have to grab the sequel at some point down the line.

Boreal Tenebrae caught my eye. It's a cool-looking lo-fi narrative horror game, out this Friday:

I wasn't planning on getting anything this month but I noticed that this game is discounted to just $1.99 until the end of April (well, the 28th to be exact), so I picked it up. I've already finished it as it's a short game (only a couple of hours long), and I have to say I'm mixed on it.

The low poly art style is beautiful, the game has a wonderfully creepy atmosphere, and is very evocative of the PS1 era. There are FMV cutscenes, the game itself uses fixed camera angles, and they basically lifted the text font, menus, cursor and selection sound from FF VII. The story is presented in a nonlinear, semi-confusing fashion so beware if that's not your cup of tea but I was interested in seeing it unfold, and understood the basic gist of it.

Unfortunately, I encountered some annoying bugs. You do a lot amount of backtracking in the game, and there is one area that I revisited and couldn't get out of, forcing me to reload a save. In another area I came back to, the character I needed to interact with was gone, even though they were supposed to be there. After looking everywhere in vain I discovered by chance that I could interact with the empty spot where they once stood, so I guess the character model didn't load or something and I had a conversation with the floor. The most frustrating bug that almost made me quit happened towards the end. I'll keep it really vague, there are no story or puzzle spoilers but I'll put it behind a tag anyway to be on the safe side:

You need to combine two items in order to proceed, one of which is a knife. I was at the spot where I needed to combine the items but the game refused to do it. No matter what order I selected them in, every time I chose the knife the character would say, "I cut it!" and nothing would happen. I was stuck.

I went to YouTube and looked at a playthrough in order to see if I missed something. But at the same spot I was at, when selecting the knife the character in the playthrough instead said, "Nothing to cut.." and was prompted to combine it with the other item. Why was it different for me? The only comments on that playthrough were a couple of people having the same issue I did so at least I wasn't alone, but I couldn't find any solution. The playthrough was of the Xbox version so maybe it's a Switch exclusive bug? I don't know.

In one last act of desperation I decided to go back to an earlier area in the game, the only place where I used the knife to cut something. Now that there was no longer anything in that area to cut, when I used the knife there it said, "Nothing to cut.." and I was finally able to combine the knife with the other item. I think what happened was that the first time I used the knife, it somehow locked on that "I cut it!" message and only using the knife again in that same area unlocked it.

Also, the game ends so abruptly I laughed out loud.

Despite all that I don't regret playing Boreal Tenebrae. There's a lot about it I liked, and even the frustration of the bugs was alleviated by the fact I was able to get past them and the game only cost me two bucks. Yet at the same time those issues make it difficult for me to wholeheartedly recommend. Even if it gets patched I imagine most people will find the conclusion to be unsatisfying, but the lo-fi vibe and creepy atmosphere might be worth $1.99 by itself. I wouldn't pay the full price of $6.99 for it though.

yes, surely is interesting
don't sleep on Tormented Souls if interested in classic survival horrors
I hope the Switch port is good, I do want to support devs making games in that style.

Thanks for the detailed impressions! It's disappointing to read about thr game being buggy. though. Still, I'll probably get it now and wait for it to be patched before playing it, eventually.

Are you talking about Tormented Souls?
I think it's a good port
image quality and richness of the scenes are there; lights effect are decent; fluidity is good for such a slow game

there is some weird bug in the darkness (turno on the lighter, and it will go away) and loading times are a little bit too long, for "in-game" loading moments, but that's it

and playing it portable with headphones is pretty scaring!

Yeah, I tried to find some footage of the Switch version a couple of days ago, but I couldn't find any.

SwitchUp put out a review like 15 hours ago or so, and that footage does look pretty good. But damn, I wasn't expecting it to be such a dark game. It's Silent-Hill-1-interiors levels of visibility. What do you mean by a "bug in the darkness", what happens exactly?

Nobody Saves the World - Played a little bit of this on Gamepass and a had good time with it.

Toodee and Topdee - Interesting puzzle game involving switch between a platformer and a top down perspective

Also, sorry for being a little late with this post. I've been a little under the weather with a stomach bug, but I think I'm on the up now.

The embargo was supposed to be active until tomorrow lol
btw: it IS a very dark game, I can confirm you! This is also one of the reasons I liked it in portable mode, at night, in the bed hahha
the bug in the darkness is that, in certain areas that are supposed to be TOO DARK to see (so they push you to enlight the lighter to see something) the screen becomes strange, like a "dark noise" effect (similar to the white noise on the old tv screens)
nothing game breaking, but still...

I really hope all the reviews/previews highlight that you can find an alternate outfit in the first room because that character design is so bad (along with several other things that make me question how old these devs are).

So I ended up getting Don't Starve Together since it's only $5.99 for people who had Don't Starve Nintendo Switch Edition. I'm really enjoying it so far..it seems to run smoothly with 3 people online. I saw some people complaining that the map is kinda small, but I never played Don't Starve Together before now. The game is 2 player local(same system) or up to 4 player online...you can make a server of your own and play with random people or friends online. I made a video and you can see that below. I'm really enjoying it so far and hope to play it some more the rest of the week.

have you reviewed the game?
I was looking for other articles, but no Metacritic update so far.
For me, it was a solid "full 3D" experiment with the old-school formula for the survival horror genre

no, I don't review games. I looked at reviews of the original release.

At a glance there's some good games there, such as Halley's Comet and Qix.

Elevator Action and Ninja Warrior too.

I grabbed a couple new releases today, Nobody Saves the World and Cat Cafe Manager. Only tried NSTW so far and it’s brilliant, Drinkbox doesn’t miss. Just a fun/silly action RPG with lots of great ideas for its classes. Gonna try Cat Cafe later tonight!

Oooh... I saw two bad reviews for Cat cafe manager.

Hope you disagree :D

Has anyone played Unforeseen Incidents? Noticed it was on sale and was curious.
I did! I just got done playing the first hour or so. It seems to be an interesting adventure game...and by Adventure game I mean one of those point and click adventure games..only you actually can use the left stick and walk if you'd rather do that. Really like the voice acting and interested in seeing where it could end up going.

Appreciate the early impressions. Would you say it seems more lighthearted or is it more of a serious game? Neither is a turn off, just curious about the tone.

I played about an hour tonight and am having fun with it so far - it doesn’t seem like there will be a a ton of depth to it and it’s definitely not “Stardew Valley with a Cat Cafe instead” (you don’t actually explore the town or anywhere, it’s really just about the cafe building and operation) — but seems like a decent, relaxing little time waster to me so far. We’ll see if it falls apart as it goes on.

There's some awesome deals on the eshop currently

Quake 5.98
Dicey Dungeons 7.49
Windbound 8.73 (significantly patched and with added content)
Yoku's Island Express 6.75

A "definitive edition" of Arise: A Simple Story is coming to Switch next week. It's a 3D platformer originally released in 2019 that I almost got on PS4, but forgot about for one reason or another.

Here's a trailer

and some Switch gameplay here

BTW there is a golden week sale from KT, with discounts on Atelier Ryza 1 and 2, Fatal Frame, Monster rancher , RoTK, DW8XL, Warriors orochi 4 and Fairy Tail, and DLC from most of them

This looks pretty cool! I’m a sucker for cinematic platformers done well (basically the opposite of something like Planet Alpha)

The Last Friend is half off so I got it. It's a kind of tower defense beat em up with dogs and there's also a demo where you can play the first ~5ish levels. Careful though, progress doesn't transfer over to the full game.

I also bought it at the 50% introductory discount. A very cool mix of tower defense and brawler so far! I really like that you can shorten in duration of the levels by doing combos while beating up the enemies yourself.

Very tempted to get Atelier Ryza but I haven’t even started Rune Factory 5 yet

Is Fairy Tale any good? I remember liking the look of it when it first came out but it was far too expensive for my tastes.

I'm in the mood for some fun and mindless blasting, so I've been eyeing Zombie Army 4. Looks like a great port, but I might just wait for a sale.

The character presentation and OST is very good (because Gust), the battle system is decent (turn based with a grid), but the overall graphics feels like they didn't had a lot of budget (and it just looks the same in PS4). With that said it's a blast if you enjoy the franchise and they did a very good job translating the magic and friendship themes to the battle system with the combos.

Thank you for the reply, I'll consider it while it's on sale then.

So I'm about 10 hours into Gotta Protectors and having a lot of fun. I've been playing mostly solo, although did do a little co-op with my wife and my oldest son.

The game is what I would imagine a SNES era musou game would be, with a little bit of some tower defense elements mixed in. In each level, you have to protect the princess as she rides along a train track to the enemy castle. Enemies are spawning along the way, and there are times where she will stop and you have to make a stand and defeat all of the enemies. The combat isn't super deep, but it is quite satisfying to mow down a screen full of enemies. You have your choice of 7ish different characters, all who play a bit differently and each with a customizable skill loadout. The game also does a really good job of mixing things up, always seeming to introduce new tweaks and elements as you progress through the missions.

One big difference from the previous game, is that in this one, each mission consists of 4 stages done consecutively, with an intermission between each stage where you can upgrade things (Stats / Skills / Security / Princess) using gold collected from enemies. These upgrades reset every mission and you can keep any gold left over at the end of the mission for permanent upgrades, such as new skills. It's a neat balance where you want to save as much gold as you can, but if you don't upgrade yourself enough, you might not be able to complete the mission. I've gotten myself into a situation where I was too greedy and I was unable to beat the 4th stage on mission.

My only real minor criticism is the scantily clad characters. It's just unnecessary. Aside from that, it's a great little game that I would recommend people check out.

The Deponia Collection is a steal for point and click adventure fans. $6 AU for four games.

Started the first and enjoying it.

Did anyone have any impressions of AstroDogs in this thread or another thread? It launched mid-month, and is a Star Fox-style on-rails shooter. Was interested in it, but didn't know the value proposition or quality of the Switch port. Sorry if this has been discussed already and I missed it due to poor search skills!
