Pre-Release Elden Ring Hype Thread [Release date February 25th, 2022]

Down to 96 with 109 reviews! ODYSSEY REIGNS SUPREME

Has to share second place now with filth such as BotW and RDR2.
It was fun while it lasted but I knew not to trust the early hype. Now that the honeymoon period is over we can hopefully talk about it in a more levelheaded way.

did they? I know it ran better on the series x during the the network tests, but the pre-day one patch comparisons I've seen have both consoles struggling to get to 60 on performance mode, with the series x on the lower end of that. hopefully it's ironed out on Friday
Oh you talk specificly about this one game. I dont know about that. I was talking about the performance in general. They compared both consoles and xsx was always on top.

I'm a vehement opponent of cloud gaming but damn. This game might be the only one I'd want as cloud streaming on Switch. Because otherwise I have to wait until the successor as it's unlikely to run on Steam Deck either.

Unreal scores, especially in a world of clickbait.

SMO/BOTW/RDR2 are in my top 5 of all-time, so will have to make room for this also.

We are not on era anymore. You dont have to justify your xsx. I also have an xsx. We are free . :D
Count me in on that I think for the first time in a while, I am going XSX this gen instead of PS. Only one exclusive that I want from PS, and that is FF16, and that is going to be a timed exclusive anyway. It's going to feel weird having an Xbox on my media shelf lol

I know I am waiting for my group for the Steamdeck later on in the year, but I am having slight reservations on it and may get an XSX instead. Luckily I have time to decide. I think I am in the second group for Deck. Either way, it will be a bit before I can play Elden Ring.

Can I just say that it's nice to see a massively hyped game actually deliver for once? It seems like a rarity nowadays. Either the marketing oversells the game (Cyberpunk) or the game is buggy as hell (GTA Trilogy and also Cyberpunk). There's no waiting on patches or updates to fix the game here. Thank god.

Prepurchased instantly. Feels really good to finally have another game that just seems to cause awe game design wise. Feel like we haven’t had that since BotW.

Kinda interested in this: really seems like a game that takes BotW's approach to exploration and thoughtfully expands on it.

Haven't got a system to play it on though, and there's just about as many pro's as cons for me.

1). I lurrrve me some BotW style exploration;
2). I have a dislike for animation-priority combat systems;
3). I luuuurve me some cool weird fantasy setting;
4). I have a dislike for grimy and dark;
5). I luuuuurve me some horseback running around shenanigans;
6). I have a dislike for boss battles.

If you dislike boss battles I don't recommend playing any Souls games.

First time in a while I pre-ordered with a steelbook for making it feel just a little more special, seeing these scores makes me have no regrets at all! Can't wait to dive in. Wonder if it will feel like BotW in a way?

I'd watch a stream to see some gameplay first. That's what I'm doing and from what I've seen so far it looks like more Dark Souls but open world. Lots and lots of combat.

Yeah this probably still won't be for you, I imagine. At the end of the day, this is still a Souls game in all but name, just bigger and with a more heavy emphasis on (some apparently very well done) exploration. Combat and boss battles are going to be a very major part of the gameplay experience, there's no getting around that.

That's the impression I've always had. I don't play games to "triumph" over them - I've got plenty of real life challenges for that!

Good idea!

Sigh, I'm of that mind as well. It's really commendable that they've seemingly taken the BotW style of exploration further instead of just copying stuff and leaving it at that. It makes me long for that 2017 feeling in a way that almost pushes me over the edge to start banging my head agains the Dark Souls wall along with the rest xD .

But yeah, if it's still a Souls game I'll probably end up just exploring the crap out of the map and running away a lot, and then dropping it.

Sucks that this game is getting the Legends Arceus treatment from some people. The game is most likely fantastic, but some people are showing concern over performance. It's a valid concern, but when a game is great, hardly matters to me to a point.

I think this is the first game that’s actually mad me want to get another system since I bought the Switch. Which is crazy, because I feel like I barely play any games as it is. I’ve never even played a From Soft game, but hearing this follows the BotW approach to open world design makes me want to jump in.

Ah well, hopefully one day the PS5 will be affordable and easy to find. Maybe I’ll finally even just play Dark Souls in the meantime.

Oh yeah I definitely agree. So far I'm LOVING Sekiro so I'm not too disappointed by myself 😂 Just wish I was quicker at beating games in general. A character flaw, hahaha.
I buy around three to four new games a year, I'm molasses as well. But the ones I do play I tend to "beast mode" if you will.

Sekiro is a dream game with how sublime its battle system feels. Make sure to find out how to fight a certain Winged Boss twice!

Maybe I’ll finally even just play Dark Souls in the meantime.
Honestly, Dark Souls 1 is still tied with Bloodborne for "best in class" and its level design and layout has yet to be topped. (IMO)

Anyone else getting their copy from Best Buy? If so, is the steelbook part of your order? It isn't showing up for me.
I preordered from Best Buy today for in-store pickup. It said the steelbook will be shipped at a later date.

Why is it worse on Xbox and PC? their scores are 95 but Ps5 is 97.

Was it designed for PS or are those reviewers more forgiving?

souls games are the type that i kinda love everything about them except the basic gameplay loop. which is also my problem with monhun, and ive tried, believe me, put dozens of hours on each franchise but they're just not the experience i look for on a videogame

like, id rather deal with old school fuckery, like mega man or ninja gaiden, cause i feel the controls are more responsive, and i also dont love classicvanias because of the ponderous movement. Unfortunately i cant vibe with the genre but the art, character design and atmosphere are always amazing

Xbox Series S for the win as well!

For everyone wanting to get a system specifically for this game, I would highly recommend a Series S. It's quite affordable, and most importantly available.

I am not sure if I will be getting this game, but I am for sure reading some impressions before jumping in. It seems like they have taken care of a lot of the problems I had with Dark Souls. So I might be in.

Purchased it on PSN tonight. Said it last week, but I adored Demon’s Souls (and liked, but didn’t love Bloodborne).

Excited. Knew this would score highly and the world looks mesmerising. It looks like a place you want to get lost in.

I suppose Japanese support seems much better than previous Xbox consoles, which is really the only thing that would make me hesitate to purchase one over a PS5.

The biggest hangup I’ve always had with the Souls games is that I’m really, really bad at video games and can get frustrated pretty easily, so I’ve never really felt like I’d be able to appreciate them.

I dropped it because it was too easy
Dark Side and Darker Side would like to have a word with you. But then again, those levels are at the very end of the game so I see where you, the madman who has done multiple 0% runs in Dread, might be coming from.

Tbh it feels like that's more on the Western side of the industry, and that too specifically the third-party Western devs. I can't recall a Japanese-developed game or a Sony/Microsoft game encountering those sorts of issues. Not making any statement as to causes, but as someone who tends towards the Japanese-developed side of the industry I've always been a bit confused by the "majorly hyped games always turn out bad recently" rhetoric.

I plan to go back to it! I still enjoyed what I played. Controls in particular feel amazing! I get why people love Odyssey. I just miss that the old-school 2D Mario games used to kick my butt. 🤣

It's not 3D, but please tell me you've played Celeste
Yup, I started it a few weeks ago! Absolutely brilliant game. I put it down for a bit, because all I have on the mind right now is Elden Ring, but I'll definitely go back and finish it soon. Those B-Side levels are brutal, in the best way possible. So many deaths... 🥲

Halo Infinite had a pretty rough launch. Sony hasn't had anything go wrong though, so your point still stands.

I feel guilty jumping into this only playing half of Bloodborne, but not only does it sound like a good starting point for from games, but I can’t miss out on the first 97 since RDR2 and the first game that looks to truly continue BotW’s innovation

Pre Ordered on PS4 Pro today

Breath of the Wild references in reviews really get people angry - can't help but relish the schadenfreude.

On that note, at least from what I'm seeing, I'd love for people to get the impression that Breath of the Wild 2 was influenced to a degree by Souls games; Specifically around having a lot of unique bosses, optional or otherwise, discovered throughout progression. My first couple Lynel and Hinox sightings were an absolute thrill, but by the end of the game that thrill is completely gone. How great would the sequel be for us to discover unique bosses guarding treasure (armors, weapons, etc) even as far as 50 hours in?

...

But back on topic g'damn I'm excited.

I have no idea what class I should be playing. I want to use magic out of fear that I'll be awful in melee range, but I kind of want a mix of both. I guess close to a Paladin in other games?

They definitely want newcomers to jump in, so it's no big. Prior to Sekiro, I had never played a FromSoft game, so I also arrived pretty late to the party. I still need to run through the Dark Souls trilogy, myself.

“The Legend of Zelda” and “Breath of the Wild” have been trending on Twitter because of reviews lol

This is a great point. I remember being terrified the first time I saw a Talus, and I was thrilled when I was able to bring it down. But after your twentieth time fighting one, they get to be just a bit less exciting.

There had better be Solaire's armor and the praise the sun gesture hidden away in some dark cave somewhere in Elden Ring, or something along those lines!
Yeah I hope so too. In the last trailer From show a helmet similar to Solaire, but the full armor would be cool.

As someone who hated the Souls games he's tried out, is it worth giving Elden Ring a shot?
I would say no based on what I've seen of the game, but it depends on why exactly you've hated the Souls games

From a combat perspective, this'll be a more refined version of the Souls formula. So if that's why you hate Souls games, then I can't see Elden Ring working for you. If the overall difficulty is the problem, then it looks like Elden Ring might work. The game is at its core as difficult as ever but there are apparently a lot of options for toning that down by NPC summons and just dipping out to explore more and get more powerful. I've generally seen that Souls games' difficulty can be trivial if you're overleveled/geared, and I imagine that'll be easier than ever in Elden Ring. That being said, according to reviewers this game is still going to do the traditional Souls thing of throwing ridiculously hard boss fights and enemy encounters at you. If you dislike the overall feel of the games, then Elden Ring probably ain't changing that. It seems very much Dark Souls in that aspect.

If you hate Souls games for their out-of-combat gameplay then it's a hard call. Elden Ring seems to change that up significantly, after all, so there's no real telling. But still, I can't imagine this game changing many minds when it comes to Soulslikes. It's an improvement over the formula, not a complete divergence.

Well I didn't like the obtuseness, lack of direction, clunky movement and combat, lack of music, and especially the punishing death system
Ok well in that case I can't see you liking this that much. Obtuseness and lack of direction seem to be the name of the game, the combat seems a good deal smoother than previous Soulslikes but not different in core design (I wouldn't personally come near to calling any Souls game "clunky" but I can get where you're coming from I think), music is probably in line with the rest of the franchise, and death carries the same punishment as always (though checkpoints seem to be a tad more generous)

Clunky movement and combat? The rest is whatever, but bruh
That's exactly how I'd describe Demon's Souls and from what I saw of most of the other Souls games. There are N64 and PS1 games I find to control more nicely than that game

I wouldn't apply this to Bloodborne but the rest of the game is still as Souls as they come and that was just completely unappealing to me

Well I more so disliked the controls and combat of Demon's Souls and most of the series seem to just build off of how that game controls. I thought Bloodborne was fine enough in that regard but, well, it still had the other elements that just completely turned me off. Difficulty didn't bother me, unlike something like Metroid Dread or Celeste, as I didn't find the first few bosses I encountered particularly tough or anything but more flexibility on exploring to get more powerful is definitely something I'd like to do. That's part of the fun of an open world game

Well the out-of-combat gameplay didn't exactly help but, if the rest of the game is fun, I don't think that'd even really register to me as much of a negative

Yeah, that's what it seems like. I was kind of hoping the open world would make the game a lot less punishing to incentivize exploration as the punishment is by far my biggest problem with their games. It's also why I had to drop Hollow Knight as it just got too frustrating to constantly backtrack to where I died all so I can do the one part that killed me
