News Famitsu || Actraiser Was Optioned for an HD2D Remake; more HD2D Games in the Works

I don’t really get the complaints around HD 2D getting “too many” remakes since Square is doing a ton of remakes of different styles currently:
  • FF7 full remake/reimagining.
  • Front Mission 3D remake.
  • FF pixel remasters.
  • Whatever ActRaiser was.
  • Regular HD remasters (Chrono Cross, FFVIII, FFX, FFXII).
It’s not like every single Square re-release is HD 2D.

This would be my absolute dream game. Lufia II is the best RPG on SNES in my opinion and it never got a rerelease.

Also, yes. Taito IP, but Square Enix Holdings owns them.
Yeah listening to the interview and reading it I guess they are focusing on the IP's from Square and Enix. But one can hope that they did find Lufia somewhere and be like: That is a good RPG!

Also Edelgard is a good choice ;p

I wonder if Hanjuku Hero made the list? That’s Tokita’s other main series and when they took the series to PS2 it was basically sprites on 3D backgrounds.

Can we get CT in HD-2D without ATB? Then it would finally be perfect, with true turn-based combat.
Live a Live is basically this

I think 2D HD remakes of Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG very late in the Switch's life are inevitable tbh.

I don't think anyone expected Octopath Traveler to be that influential on the direction SE would take with NES/SNES era games. I'm happy that Asano team is being so prolific.

Seen the article earlier, that and the other interview are really interesting.
Matsuda has definitely seen those were selling well, and no surprise he wants more given how Asano Team knows how to work with a budget and the vast majority of those games are outsourced (like every game from that team).

Pretty sure he can expect the vast majority of SNES RPGs not called Final Fantasy to get this treatment over time.
I kinda expect FF to also get this treatment, but in like four or five year (we just had the pixel remasters after all)

I don't have anything specific I want in 2DHD, but it's nice to see a new one from time to time. I never thought I wanted a Live a Live remake, but I'm definitely buying it, so I'm in for what else they might bring.

Also, anything Dragon Quest is a lock for me.

Why would Super Mario RPG get a HD 2D remake when the game's artstyle was "fake 3D" like the DKC games.

I honestly kinda don't want Xenogears to get a HD-2D remake. I really do like the original style it has and would I feel the game might lose something if it was homogenized into the HD-2D style. I also fear that such a style change might lead to them tinkering with the direction of various scenes, which would hurt since Gears has nice cinematography for a lot of its cut-scenes. I realize I'm probably in the minority here, but I just don't think I'd like the results, especially if its without the original staff (which is likely since many of them left alongside Takahashi to Monolith).

HD-2D remakes are great, but include the original version that you can switch to in game anytime so the originals are not forgotten, and it would be even better.

Give me a remake of Mario RPG where the graphics are rendered in real-time and now we're talking
How would that look different? Do you have an example?

The joke is that Xenogears already is a proto HD-2D game

I like how many people tend to write 2D-HD instead of HD-2D as we mostly see in the trailers :p

It’s still ok but I think a lot of the novelty is going to get lost if they overdo it. It definitely doesn’t work for every game.

that's capcom tho
Yep but maybe Capcom can do something about this.

Imagine, having the BoF franchise with a good translation, non truncated names, spells and items and with a beautiful reorchestrated soundtrack !

Dragon Quest V HAS to be up at SOME POINT, right? Maybe after III is out?

Imagine… imagine…

Soul Blazer
Illusion of Gaia
Terranigma

in 2D-HD.
With new orchestral soundtrack.

I prefer 2DHD to low budget 3D reworkings. Everything comes out feeling like one of those Square RPG factory titles. You either go in whole hog and throw cash at it (which won't happen) or do the best possible version of 2D feels.

The irony here makes this funny to me

I've seen many HD2D-inspired games from smaller studios. but this one more accurately replicates the style
I agree, I think it looks pretty amazing and I'd like to see more gameplay. In that short trailer there were a ton of little animations that looked fantastic and I hope the rest of the game has substance to match.

All about this. As someone that does feel everything needs to be remade to be 3D for the sake of it or completely remade to look like something vastly different, I dig this because it emphasizes the beauty of pixel graphics.

Trigger in full 3D like the Mana remake is like my worst nightmare lol

But a 2DHD as long as the original sprites are left used? Yes please.

Yeah something about Chrono Trigger in the Trials of Mana style irks me. I'd love to see a full, immersive 3D revisiting of that game, but something about the way they did Trials felt a little flat. And FFVII-R would be too far. Honestly I'd like Trigger to be left alone and for goddamn Break to finally be on the table, as a modern-style 3D game that would give the option to revisit some settings from the original in this grand, new perspective.

But who am I kidding, every time I even mention Break there's an employee at Square whose ears perk and then he resets the clock.

That’s wheee I am. I’m all for new styles. Cross had some gorgeous visual design and it was a departure.

Give me a new entry at that point. Also, replaying the game a few years ago after picking up the DS version for 20 bucks on Amazon, game still is gorgeous.

I know I'm in the minority on this, but the weird lighting and scaling, and on Switch low resolution, I think does a lot to detract from the beauty of pixel graphics. In images like this or this, the polygonal environments come across a lot better than the pixel characters.

how does it look on PC when you're not constrained by hardware?

Digital Foundry's video has some nice comparisons (I'd forgotten the PC version also has a much nicer frame rate). Their video is at 4K, but these shots I grabbed from it are just 1080p. Some of the Switch downsides are more obvious in motion, like the scaling in battle as the camera moves.

I'm interested in seeing how all of these work. I'm not super excited about DQ3, for example, unless it gets some nice QOL features and/or some added content. I just played through DQ3 last year and although the graphics are dated, the core gameplay is still pretty fine. I'm not interested in paying $60 for it to just look prettier.

HD2D is literally the only way to remake Chrono Trigger without ruining what’s special about that game. You can’t give it the FF7R treatment or the trials of mana treatment, it would not be a good experience.

FF7R is completely different from the original game, so yeah. But why would any form of polygonal characters be inherently less special?
