It's a 3/5 for me. Nothing that really hyped me, but FE3H Warriors and Switch Sports are fun, MK8DX getting meaty new content (and free for me as a NSO+subscriber) is good and LiveALive looks great, just nothing that blew my mind.

I'm a bit worried about 2023, this starts to look like 2017 when all the big bombs droped that year and 2018 had nothing relevant except 3 or 4 games.

I mean of coruse it could have the new Fire Emblem, Metroid Prime 4 or a new Mario to redeem, but seems like they are droping all of their shit this year.

I fully expect Zelda BOTW 2 to be a november game, rgiht now Nintendo doesn't have a console seller for holyday season.

I guess I can't be mad at a Direct that brings back Mario Strikers and Wii Sports but man almost none of the new announcements spoke to me at all. No Man's Sky port is cool but some of the other ports are so weird. Portal but not the orange box, the Wii version of TFU (it looked like the Wii version) and some remasters sounded interesting but that was it for me. The heavy hitters were a Xenoblade and another Musou which are games I really don't care for.

Tl;Dr 3/5 needs less weeb

Solid 9/10 for me, that was one of the best recent Directs I can think of. Even though there were some stuff I'm missing.

  • Fire Emblem Warriors was a big monkey paw reveal. I was confused when I heard Three Houses main theme, and laughed out loud when I saw the title. It isn't what we were expecting, but the hints and rumour from Nate now make sense. I'm not even mad, but I don't know if I want a FE Musou, especially only focused on 1 title. Game looked pretty good either way, hope it runs well.
  • Mario Strikers is the dream. I didn't expect them to make one after all these years, and I thought they would strip it from all its personality, but here it is. It looks pretty great, the online stuff looks awesome and I can't wait for this.
  • Kirby keeps looking better and better with each showing. Game looks so fun! I've never been this excited for a new Kirby game ever.
  • Front Mission looked very cool. I had never heard of this game before, but I love mechs and strategy games, so I'm in. I'll stay cautiously optimistic for now, since I don't have that much confidence in the devs.
  • Chrono Cross is finally announced, I was very surprised to see it in a Direct. Never played Chrono Cross, so this is my chance. Very happy about this.
  • Live A Live looks amazing, I love HD-2D and love that Square is using it more and more. I still want to wait for impressions for this games, but everything I saw looked great. I just hope it has dual audio.
  • Advance Wars is finally shown again. While I'm still not sold on the visuals of the game, it's still Advance Wars. I'm happy they told us more about the modes. Again, cautiously optimistic, but I'm almost surely going to buy the game to let Nintendo know I want more.
  • Xenoblade 3 looked so amazing. I think it looked closer to the first game than 2, in terms of the character design, but with the artist from 2. It seems like the 3 games are connected after all, and this is probably the last in the trilogy if I understand correctly. It's coming out way sooner than expected.
  • Mario Kart DLC: No one saw this coming, no one. DLC for a Wii U port after almost 5 years. The crazy lads did it. We're not getting MK9 anytime soon, not that I expected it... But they announced 48(!!!!) tracks. And for €25(!!!!). The DLC on the Wii U was €20 for 16(if I recall) and that was already a good deal in my book. I'm one of the few people who didn't double dip for MK8 on Switch, but now I'm sold. I'm getting the game (again) and I'm happy Nintendo is at least adding something to the Expansion Pack
  • And many others! I'm happy with the GetsuFumaDen shadow drop, I almost forgot about the game. No Man's Sky looks incredible on the Switch, I've never played it before, so might try it out on Switch. Portal is always great, I have it on pc already, but might double dip for a good price and if I can get a friend to play with me. Mother 1 and 2 finally on Switch Online, they made a way too big of a deal out of a ROM dump of old games, but they are amazing titles.
I might have forgotten a thing or too, but those are mostly my thoughts. It would have been a 10/10 if they had a mainline Fire Emblem, more focus on Advance Wars and demo, more shown from Splatoon, something from Monster Hunter or some new third party announcement.

I'm really happy with the presentation overall.

Didn't get Goldeneye or Bayo, Zelda, Metroid and there was a lot of RPGs (not my genre) but... I was really surprised and happy with Mario Kart, Switch Sports and Portal. Plus the excitement other people had for those RPGs was fun to see so I had a good time watching this live

I took away 7 games that I'm really interested in which is a lot for me. Besides that there were a lot of "they actually did it" type games, from more HD-2D, Klonoa, Strikers, Chrono, Mario Kart, Sports, No Man's Sky... Also, Kirby finally looks ready to release with many of the earlier trailers' technical issues solved.

Despite no Zelda again (which means it's late 2022 at the earliest sigh) I consider this to be a top-tier Direct.

that being said ZELDA NEXT TIME K?!

4/5. Was actually quite surprised how much I liked it given the rumblings beforehand.

Fire Emblem and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 just don't interest me, but was delighted by things like Mario Strikers, Switch Sports, Live A Live, Klonoa and that MK8 DLC, as well as more details on Kirby and Splatoon.

I was only interested in the Mario Kart 8 DLCs and Xenoblade, I didn't care about all the rest.

But still, I could understand that the games presented can be very very interesting for many many people. Overall, it was a pretty good Direct.

Why an embarrassment?
Less sports than Resort

Less sports variety than the original (3/6 sports are basically tennis variations),

Major content isn’t coming until after launch (golf). The original had everything day 1 in 2006.

Mii’s are shoved to the side for generic cheap avatars that look straight out of a shovel ware party game (and yes, I’m aware mii’s are still playable, but not having them as the main NPC’s removes 90% of the games charm for me).

Speaking from a purely personal perspective, this was one of the best Directs for me. Loads of games and content I want to play, and some really nice surprises too. Xenoblade 3, Advance Wars, Mario Strikers, Kirby, New Mario Kart tracks, FE warriors, they're all going to consume my free time when they launch.

My GOD this year is stacked now

It’s four stars from me. Live A Live took me completely by surprise, as well as Strikers, and both look awesome. Salmon Run was my favourite part of Splatoon 2, so seeing it return was nice. EarthBound 1 & 2 shadow dropping, and Switch Sports were murmurs that felt good to finally see come to life. Also, it was great getting a release date for AW Re-boot Camp which is still sitting very high on my hype list. Kirby looked AMAZING, and was low-key the highlight of the show. I have some interest in playing most of the games shown, probably even Day 1 a good chunk of them, which is always a good feeling after a show.

The only thing keeping it from 5-stars was the lack of any big titles that personally interest me. I’m excited for Xenoblade and musou fans, but they weren’t for me.

What did I need to give that extra star? TP/WW HD, Majora’s Mask NSO, Kingdom Hearts physical release, Style Savvy - to name a few realistic possibilities. Obviously some other stuff like BOTW2 news and PLA DLC would have shot it up too, but you kind of know when to expect stuff that big for already announced/released games.

Five stars. It hit all my weak points, everything from Warriors to Xenoblade, retro remasters, Earthbound, Mario Kart... It was amazing, it didn't need the big hitters to be an incredible showing from Nintendo.

They're even bringing back Wii Sports, for fuck's sake.

Hell, it's been long since i've seen such consensus in my twitter timeline. Nintendo will have it really hard to top this at the E3

Pretty solid 4 out of 5 good mix 3rd party announcements and 1st party really excited about Mario strikers 3 and Switch Sports

Silly ratings stuff.

....

..

9/10. Zelda or Metroid would've made it 9.5/10 and both 10/10.

Have I answered this already?

4/5 stars. Could've been way way better, but Xenoblade 3 hype is doing its job, and Mario Strikers is great news. Also do not sleep on No Mans Sky.

The Direct just has a bit too much filler/repeats from previous announcements.

I feel you. Tennis, badminton and volleyball are indeed extremely similar, and the volleyball demonstration frankly did not look too great.

Soccer isn't even finished in the initial release.
If golf weren't coming later down the line I'd basically dismiss this game.
As it stands I'll wait for golf and then get it.
The $40 price gives me hope for a paid expansion in 2023 - I need Table Tennis, Air Sports, Archery and more!

I thought it was a good direct but there wasn't a ton of stuff where I thought "I MUST have that game". I might give Fire Emblem Warriors a try if performance is ok, MK DLC interests me, the Live a Live remake looked great and Kirby looks fun. No real interest in Mario Strikers or Wii Sports 2 but I'll give the demo a try.

This year must be stacked as most of these games are first half of the year, can't wait to see what they have lined up for second half.

I'll give it a 5 because it shocked me and made me more excited about the Switch than I expected from them given the rumors. Switch Sports, Mario Strikers, and doubling MK8Ds track list are massive and I didn't see coming.

Was it all perfect? No, since I really wanted a new FE and instead we get Warriors 2 this summer. lol Also Splatoon 3 had an underwhelming showing, when we still don't have a release month.

Really good Direct for me. Live A Live, Chrono Cross, Earthbound NSO, Front Mission remakes and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 reveal were all highlights. But I love JRPGs. I also think Switch Sports was a cool reveal.

EDIT: Nintendo essentially told us BOTW2 is their big holiday game and that this year and next year won't have new hardware of any significance (MK8D is a frequently bundled game and supporting it through end of 2023 tells us not to expect Dane until 2024)

4 stars.
It was EXCELLENT!

Objectively, it was very well laid out, games got their deserved time in the spotlight, good variety, solid lineup, loved the volleyball match.

Personally, I'm stoked.
Mario Strikers - YES!
Chrono Cross - inject it into my veins !!
Kirby - Looks better and better.
Klonoa - What a surprise!
And Xenoblade. Xenoblade. Xenoblade looked SO GOOD.

It was a 2/5 for me, if I’m being realistic the only things I’m gonna be playing are the MK8 DLC tracks and maybe Portal? But there was plenty of stuff outside my tastes, so I can’t hate.

I consider myself to be anxious and I suffer a lot due to this, but this is a whole new level of anxiety.

I thought it was very good, way better than the February 2021 Direct. It had a lot of new announcements, some great info on upcoming games like Kirby and AW, plus we’re getting a ton of cool retro games. I’m not into Xenoblade that much so the final announcement was kind of a whimper. And I can’t get excited for another Warriors game. I’m sure Intelligent Systems still has some Switch game for us in 2022.

This direct was absolutely amazing, especially considering that Nintendo really stuck to their time frames of up to summer. Like, the amount of content coming up through summer is literally insane. Of course, not everything was a hit for me, but I certainly had an amazing time.

Switch Sports looks great, and I really look forward to playing it with my wife. We both grew up with the Wii, and it hits that nostalgia bone hard.

Splatoon 3 looks good, but I think we need a blowout trailer for it now.

Mariokart 8 DLC is the hypest announcement for me. This is practically a new Ultimate Mariokart.

Xenoblade 3 looks absolutely stunning. It's 1+2 vibes is literally perfect, intriguing, and it has me so hyped.

The only thing that had me disappointed was FE Warriors. But hey... I am looking forward to the next proper FE game.

So yeah, definitely a 5/5 direct, especially considering that there will likely be a beefy June direct as well.

I'd go with a 4/5. I thought that the pacing was really good compared to some of the previous Directs and there were a lot of surprising and exciting announcements.

Now, a lot of those announcements weren't for me. I'm not sure how much I'll really get out of something like Switch Sports. I'm kind of over the Warriors type of games by now. My wife is about to have twins in the spring, so I think that my days of playing long, 60 hour RPG's like Xenoblade are coming to an end, so I'm not really excited for things like XB3 or Triangle Strategy.

That being said, Mario Kart DLC is pretty exciting. Kirby looks absolutely phenomenal, and between Kirby, Advance Wars, and Splatoon that'll be enough to last me into the summer I think. I've mostly been using my Switch as a first party + indie + NSO retro games machine anyway, so that lineup looks plenty strong and there's a ton of room for a loaded fall as well.

Great announcements, high quality overall, but very few things that actually cater to my tastes (and my really small Brazilian wallet).

And the few of those that do (Portal), I already played years ago and got my fill of those.

Currently I'm mildly hyped for Kirby, and that's it.

4/5, a number of announcements I'm interested in, and a number I don't really care for. Kirby was cool, but I'm already very likely to get it so that was kinda a known factor rather than a wow thing.

Maybe 4.5/5 just for the XB3 announcement.

I’m sure some will criticize this, but it’s honestly one star from me.

There isn’t a single game announced that I’m at all interested in. The only things I liked were the Mother games and the Cuphead DLC, both of which were either already announced or I’ve played them before. I got really hyped for a second when I thought we were getting a Dread DLC, but all we got were new difficulty options. I was excited to give Chrono Cross another chance (I didnt like it originally) if it was a remake, but a remaster does nothing for me.

I went into the Direct hoping for: Silksong, 3D Mario, Prime 1 and/or 4, BotW2, FF Pixel Remasters, 2D Zelda, and Sports Story. All of those games were either heavily rumored, or at least feasible. One or two would have been satisfyin for me, but the fact that we got none is a giant disappointment. blah.

Weirdness:
Forever Entertainment decided to remake Front Mission 1st and 2nd, but not other obscure S-E properties like Einhander?
I mean, it's good that at least we are getting some new FM games, even if they're remakes. However, I don't trust Forever Entertainment, their games are usually not that great, so I don't have much hope these will turn out good.

Gotta go with a solid four stars here. I wasn't expecting quite as much as we got, a pleasant surprise!

When I look at all the great titles that were announced, it kind of feels to me like there isn't that killer announcement that sends shockwaves, but even so there were just so many positive exciting surprises. I'm truly blown away by the Mario Kart DLC news, I didn't see it coming at all and honestly feel like 48 DLC tracks that I've already paid for with my expansion pass is far better news than a new game. I'm also pumped for Strikers, even as someone who missed the first installments. I was expecting a reminder for Advance Wars Re-Boot which I've already got pre-ordered and wasn't expecting much surprise from that announcement, but I was kind of shocked at how amazing those character animations were. It really refocused my attention.

4/5

I honestly didn’t expect to walk away from the Direct with anything other than a new Kirby trailer, but there were a lot of fun, surprise announcements that got my interest.

3/5 for me. There were a few things I'm interested in, so I at least walked away satisfied with those:
  • Xenoblade 3 (very excited for this one, basically saved the Direct)
  • Metroid Dread boss rush update
  • MK8D DLC (will likely justify purchasing the NSO Expansion for me)
  • Klonoa
  • FE Warriors (not because it's a Musou, but because it's Three Houses related)
However, I wasn't particularly excited for much else. Had Xenoblade not been announced, it would have likely been one of my least favorite Directs.

6/10 at best

Splatoon trailer was mediocre

Xenoblade trailer was basically revealing the game exist, very mediocre first trailer

Switch Sports looks terrible lol

Switch keep being the port machine third party wise, some of them are cool to have nonetheless

the bright spots are Kirby new trailer was amazing, new Mario Striker and the fact that games like Splatoon and Xenoblade will be great even with their mediocre showing, they just didn't help make the direct exciting

Do you think Wii Sports was mediocre? Because it's pretty much the same thing lol

7/10 for me.

I'm very excited for the new Kirby game, and also for XC3 later this year. Interested in trying out Klonoa since I skipped out on the Wii release back in the day.

Mario Kart DLC was disappointing for me. I played enough of MK8 on the Wii U so I never bothered picking up the Switch version. Don't really want to spend $85 just so I can have the new stuff.

Didn't really affect the score, but holy moly there were a bunch of turn-based/tactical RPGs lol (a genre that I don't care for): Advance Wars, Front Mission 1st, Chrono Cross, Live a Live, Triangel Strategy.

You presented your opinion in a reasonable, respectful manner. Seems perfectly fair imo

Based on your tastes (I'm excited for all the things you listed too!), the "E3"/June Direct will probably be a lot more appealing.

Up there with February 2019 as the best direct.
Another top tier announcement would have bumped it to 5/5

Now I'll just give it 4.5 for now :>
