StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

Just a small note, PS4 didn't have HDR at release in 2013, though it was added via a software update for all PS4 systems in 2014 that significantly updated the HDMI controller itself.

I agree that Switch 2 should absolutely have it in all modes, for just... So many reasons.
Surprisingly it happened in 2016, which seems weird to think about.

The same year when the ps4 pro released, guessing that it was one of the marketing feature for the console, we might see something similar to the ps5 once the ps5 pro hits the shelf

I bet it will be PSSR this time, we know it can run on the original model and (probably) still be better than FSR.

PS5 still says 8K on the box but doesn't have an 8K output option yet. I THINK it also has an updatable HDMI controller, though not a lot of bandwidth to spare. So they could update all PS5s to support 8K with the Pro roll out.

Makes me wonder when Microsoft will release the 8K output option for Xbox Series X, which I understand still isn't out despite being on that box, too. It doesn't even have as much as a bandwidth bottleneck.

I expect NG Switch will cap out at 4K60HDR in TV mode and 1080p60HDR in other modes, with the HDR bit depth at 10 (enough for DCI-P3)

What I'm NOT entirely certain about is the kind of bandwidth we'll see; I don't know if we know the DP bandwidth of T239 (someone please chime in if we do!), but if the situation is like the OLED Model bandwidth wise, we might not get full 4:4:4 chroma. Personally I don't mind chroma subsampling but it's something to keep in mind.

Is it possibile magnets are used not only for the joycon but also for docking the switch?
Maybe it would be safer, some of my friend have scratched the screen docking the switch the wrong way

I’m predicting the gimmick of the Switch 2 is glassesless VR

8k is probably one of the biggest gimmicks I have seen in this generation, since both Sony and Xbox proudly displays that 8k works out of the box despite no games using it (even movies I think)

That also isn’t in consideration of how expensive 8k TVs are.

But who knows maybe the technology will pivot and become the new 4k

Tetris technically already exists on NSO. It's on the Game Boy app.
Yes. They're also very stingy about what is and isn't allowed though, Nintendo can't just put another Tetris on without negotiating again. Negotiating for NWC specifically is what's strange to me.

My problem is that switch's FSR1.0 looks really bad. totk with FSR1.0 scales from 720p native rendering to 900p from the viewer far worse than botw's dynamic 810-900p native resolution. So I don't know if dlss on switch2 can fix this problem
Yes… since it’ll be using DLSS instead.

Since from what I have seen the image quality for DLSS looks extremely similar to something that is Native. Like DLSS I think will be a huge selling point for the Switch 2 in its early years and is a good showcase for Nvidia that a small tablet is able to use it so nicely, especially from Nintendo since they’re extremely good at optimisation.

Unless those negotiations already took place, and it included all those versions of it. You know Nintendo loves to sit on shit when it’s already finished, and ready to head out the door after all. And in the case of NSO, releases aren’t exacting bursting at the seams with new content coming out daily. 🤷‍♂️

Pyoro is being super cryptic so I’m adamant it’s for something meatier than an NSO announcement

And the fact that Brazil and Midori co signing is a huge sign

They obviously know more than they pretend and probably won’t leak it due to the importance of the fact that it should come from Nintendo (and to stay on their little papers also)

But they will drop hints so everything will make sense when the word will come from N

While they will still be able to extend and protect their reputation and relations

Shit, I’m ok with 720p and people are talking 8k…

I can’t keep up with you whippersnappers.

I recently hooked up a 20 year old 32” 720p LCD TV downstairs in my workout area, and while it does have an HDMI port, it also has Component, and S-Video.

It’s actually quite cool watching 1440p YouTube on it, though it took awhile for my macbook to accept displaying a 720p image as a secondary monitor.

Aaahhh, S-Video.

Now you’re speaking to me.

you really shouldn't be comparing them like that. they are very different techniques with very different methodologies. FSR1 is a spatial upscaling technique. think clicking the corners of a box and dragging it to be larger. DLSS is a spatio-temporal upscaler that uses machine learning for better results

I’m not saying you’re wrong that it doesn’t look great but Tears of The Kingdom is actually 900p native with FSR bringing it to 1080p

You've got it wrong. It's 720p scaled to 900p.
900p remains the primary goal in docked mode, but this time Nintendo seems to be using AMD's much-maligned FSR1 spatial upscaler to reach 1080p, complete with mild contrast adaptive sharpening.
That's because the resolution drops to circa-720p when the camera is in motion but jumps back up to 900p as soon as it stops. It doesn't always drop, mind you, but it's certainly a common occurrence.

DLSS starts much like FSR did back in 2019 (FSR 1.0 release in 2021), being a spatial image upscaler. It has evolved greatly since then, and it does wonders, relying on tensor cores. Ever see what a 360p render upscaled to 1080p with DLSS looks like?

Just got caught up on all the detective work that's been done on the Pyoro tweet. I'm still considering the possibility that this is just NES Remix, but even if it is I still think we'll have Switch 2 news before long, so I'm not bothered.

That's not accurate. FSR scales it to 1080p (as there's only downsides to upscaling it to a lower resolution and then letting the Switch hardware upscaler upscale again). The internal resolution is 720p-900p, but it's down at 720p quite a lot.

FSR 1.0 is purely a spatial upscaler, similar to DLSS 1.0 (though the latter required per-game AI training and support). Neither are considered a good substitute at all for native resolution, so it makes sense that a game regularly dropping lower in resolution that does use FSR 1.0 would look less sharp than a game that runs at a consistently higher resolution.

DLSS 2.0 is what changed the game and looked considerably closer to a native render of the output resolution than the input resolution. The key to that was switching to a temporal solution, which takes data from multiple frames instead of just one. FSR 2.0 similarly saw a jump in quality by switching to temporal upscaling, albeit at slight performance cost over FSR 1.0 (and using multiple frames hits the Switch where its most badly constrained - memory bandwidth - which is likely why games generally stick to FSR 1.0 on the system).

Something rather important here is that all versions of FSR don't perform as well at lower resolutions compared to DLSS. DLSS's AI implementation is noted to be better at handling sub-1080p input by reviewers - something that will be common enough on the Switch 2, and something that every Switch game currently utilizing FSR 1.0 is running into.

Just want to reiterate my idea for next week:

Announcement early evening in the US, around midnight Europe, early morning Japan.

Tell investors at the earnings call to stay tuned to the video in a few hours and future info.

Unveiling at the normal time of 6 am PDT, 10 am JST, 3 pm CEST.

It’s either 3 PM CEST (Like Directs)
3 PM EST
Or 3 PM JST (When Tokyo Stock Market closes)

They’d rather announce when the market is closed imo

FSR 1 has nothing to do with DLSS 2, except that they both upscale. They're totally unrelated technologies. There isn't a good test on the internet I can point you too, unfortunately, because all the side by side videos use unlocked frame rates. The only game I've got that supports both is Deathloop and I'm not in a place in that game I can put together a repeatable test.

Just trust me that if it was DLSS 2 in TOTK, you'd think it was native resolution. It's that good

The Touryst renders at 8K on PS5. (6K on Series X)

So I guess it's actually happening, we will finally know what Nintendo's been up to this Tuesday

Can't wait
Its not happening until Pyoro gives us a more clear hint because this thing could still be a nothing burger, Midori changing the retweet gives me pause and also whenever we get hyped for anything Switch 2 related it ends up being a bust

It’s gonna happen eventually, our bad luck streak can’t go on forever. Rarely does Pyoro post something (not NSO related) that isn’t a major announcement, so even if it’s not switch 2 we are definitely in for a new game, showcase, or something major to spark speculation
