Seriously though, EPD Tokyo was hiring for a 2D Action Game back in Late 2020 and we still haven't seen it. There was some speculation that it could be Princess Peach: Showtime, but datamining the demo shows that it's being made by Good-Feel.

People latched onto Donkey Kong due to the Tokyo studio's first title being Jungle Beat, but no one knows for sure.
It’s not just that, Nintendo Life and DK Vine both confirmed a new DK game by EPD, the former claiming it was EPD 8 and the latter claiming it was a brand new EPD team

I mean, those two sites have no sources so

The accurate take on DK is to ask: “do you think EPD Tokyo’s 2D platformer will release and if so, do you think it will be DK instead of a new IP or another IP?”

So assuming these sources even exists... why do we trust them exactly?
Nintendo Life is a pretty serious online magazine, as far as gaming journalism goes

Unlike fake leakers, they’re well established and have no need for cheap clickbait so they don’t really have a reason to lie

When they say they have a very trusted source, and it’s corroborated by a number of other sources, it’s probably true

How would you even play EBA without stylus controls? Finger wouldn't be the same. We need a spiritual successor to the series, not a direct port. I trust iNis would come up with similarly innovative control scheme.

And the ports we need the most for Switch are the Op. Rainfall games:
The Last Story
Pandora's Tower
Reginleiv
Captain Rainbow

Wait why are we suddenly talking about a DK game? Has any new information surfaced or is this the same rumour from a few years ago?
Same rumour. Mostly because people either want it to be true (I certainly want EPD 8 DK) or because people are guessing at what Nintendo could have for the second half of the year.

About a month ago a Nindies direct was rumored for March. Do you know anything about it? Any rumors?

Iirc, Nintendo has had Indie Showcases around GDC and stuff like PAX a few times already in the past. So it wouldn't be uncommon if they have one around end of the month when GDC runs.

I of course mean no disrespect for all the games coming out further down the line, TTYD does look like a significant facelift, but it feels like this is the most “exhaust mode” H1 we’ve ever had, where the only non-remake/remaster first party game we know of is Peach.

I just can’t help but read it as the calm before the storm. Gear up, folks.

I think even the social accounts folks at Nintendo are scraping the bottom of the barrel right now:

Though, if the rumors of the delay end up being true, i fear it's gonna be a looooong calm.

New Star Fox or we riot!

Where is Pullblox HD? The people are crying out for the return of Pullblox!

i mean yeah? by all accounts the switch 2 was supposed to be released this year so a small H1 makes sense, doesn't necessarily mean we are still getting a big H2 after the delay thought

Even with no delay we would’ve have some big game coming this holiday. With the delay I still expect a big game this holiday. It would’ve been cross gen or not. A big game will be there.

Yeah, the scope of the games certainly reflects that Switch is winding down. There was an element of this late last year with Detective Pikachu Returns and WarioWare as lower priced games and Mario RPG as a remake. This year apart from Peach and Endless Ocean Luminous, everything is a re-release. Everything is fairly contained in production scope too - small studios like NST and Arika shipping games, EPD shipping one DLC and nothing else. Focus internally has certainly shifted to the new hardware, but I think it'll be interesting to see how the second half unfolds.

Yeah, agreed. With Pokemon Legends targeting 2025, I have to assume Nintendo had something else for Switch 1 later this year. I don't think they'd miss out on the opportunity to wring more money from the Switch audience even if new hardware was originally targeting November.

A lot of heavy lifting this year is coming from external teams with little in the way of either EPD's internal structure or Nintendo's subsidiaries. NST have shipped a lower priced remake and EPD have shipped Side Order, and if we assume that Next Level Games are handling Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, then that's another limited scope project from Nintendo's studios. A far cry from 2023 where EPD shipped new mainline Mario, Zelda and Pikmin titles (with development support from Monolith Soft and Eighting). Peach is confirmed as coming from Good-Feel, Arc System Works did Another Code, Arika are doing Endless Ocean Luminous, and Intelligent Systems are on Paper Mario (which may have been finished for a while).

Going by development timelines, NdCube and Camelot could be due for games this year. Judging by staff credits for other projects, the next Nintendo titles from indieszero and Grezzo could possibly be due. HAL's mobile/digital team could have something ready, too. The big question mark for confirmed games is really Metroid Prime 4, and whether that ends up as a final swansong for Switch this year or it joins the cross-gen period after new hardware is out.

From hiring calls, there are some unsolved mysteries, like the Bandai-Namco remake/remaster, EPD 8's 2D and 3D titles, and Monolith Soft's potential action RPG. The Bamco game should be for Switch, but it's difficult to know if those others turn up now on Switch or later on new hardware. There's also the rumoured Fire Emblem 4 remake/whatever Iron 18 might be from Intelligent Systems.

In any case, even assuming most EPD teams and subsidiaries are now prioritising new hardware, there's still quite a few potential options for second half 2024.

Hotel Dusk and The Last Window absolutely need to be ported to Switch, and would get me a great deal more hyped than Another Code Recollection (which I still need to pick up sometime soon).

I would have liked a Megamix port earlier in the generation. They already adapted all the DS games to button controls. All they would really need to do is remove the Streetpass/Simple Tap modes. Maybe add some more games and actually localize the Lush/Machine Remixes and Ending song.

If it happened now though, I think that would pretty much rule out a new game coming anytime soon.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I though the rumoured Monolith RPG ended up being Xenoblade 3

Nope, XB3 was developed by Takahashi's team. There were three hiring pages on the MonolithSoft website: one for the Xenoblade team, one for the Zelda team, and one for an unnamed third thing that we think is an action RPG, with its own medieval-looking concept art. Haven't heard a peep about what it was, but we're hoping it's still a thing.

Ooh interesting! I thought it was just based off the concept art, which could have been for Xenoblade 3 - iirc Xenoblade 2 had concept art that looked nothing like the final game, so it could be a similar case

But I didn't know about the third hiring page, very intriguing 👀

Depends on when the Switch 2 is revealed. If they show it earlier they could have a while to build hype and show off games, so the calm wouldn't be as big.

Conversely, the next Direct might be bigger than we think showing off games for H2.

if switch 2 is still being announced by the end of summer the latest maybe we’ll see Monoliths new game, if not the wait continues into early 2025

Do you all think this would be big enough to be Nintendo's holiday game or would a new IP likely be too unknown for that (and probably needs more marketing time than the seven-ish months it would get)?

I doubt it, Nintendo's Switch era holiday releases have all been from established franchises.

If it is this year (assuming it's actually alive and hasn't been turned into a Switch 2 game) sometime in August to Octobes makes the most sense to me.
