Title explains it all. I was born in 1988 got introduced to NES as a toddler and went back and played old games so I can look at game releases on wikipedia and see what my GOTY's for those games would be. You can go earlier t han 1985 if you want but I believe 1985 is when the home console market took off worldwide so I think it's a good starting point.

I say retroactive because gaming tastes change over a lifetime and sometimes you play a game years after it's release and really enjoy it so it changes your vote. I'll start.

I will be using North American release dates unless the game never got released on its initial platform in North America, because whenever I do my "retroactive" Game of the Years I want to pick games that I would have actually feasibly played in that year if I was actually playing video games at the time as an enthusiast importer who still typically waits for North American releases. I will also be doing this because I consider localizations parts of the games themselves; Gyakuten Saiban 3 released on the GBA in 2004 is not something I like nearly as much as "Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations," released on the DS in 2007, as the English script is just something I enjoy a lot more. I'll also be doing this because I think looking at specifically the North American games industry is interesting and is what this forum would have focused on if it hypothetically existed at any one of these specific points in time. But also using only North American release dates would preclude a handful of the games below from qualifying at all, so I'll use the games' release date in their country of origin for those games.

Boy, there are some rough years in there, at least according to my tastes. I am looking at you, 1986 and 2012.

On the other hand, there are years where it's heartbreaking to leave some masterpieces (or near masterpieces) out of the list, like EarthBound, Sonic 2, Hollow Knight, Okami, Wario Land (2 and 3), Metal Gear Solid V, Sekiro, and others.

I hope I didn't mess up any release years, as especially early on there are some wildly different dates depending on the region. I always considered the North American release year, which is why Super Mario Bros. 3 is all the way in 1990, for instance.

For some of the years--particularly a lot of the earlier years--the choice was easy, but for a lot of the early-to-mid 2000s in particular, it was very difficult to pick a winner. 1995 was also really difficult--it was a painful decision, but I ended up going with Chrono Trigger over DKC2 despite the latter being one of my definitive childhood games.
 
This is a fun exercise. Spotting where the strong and soft years are also helps prioritize the backlog. Like I never need to play another game released in 1992, but I should take a look at Outer Wilds to get rid off Sword & Shield.

It's worth noting I'd rather play Tetris on anything modern esp if it's 99 or Puyo Puyo, NES Metroid and A Link to the Past on GBA, one of the 16-bit All-Stars ports of SMB1 and SMB3, Diddy Kong Racing on DS, Ocarina and Majora either on the GC Collector's disk or 3DS, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on Wii U, and SM3DW and DKC:TF on Switch, with the rest on their original platform, but the above is how it best works out on the grid and so there it is.

Here are mine, listed by North American release date. Been working on this for awhile now, lol. Rather than limit myself to just one game per year, which I could never do, I instead opted to break it down by console. But even so, some years I couldn’t just pick one game per console…and then I just kinda gave up further down in the list once there just started to be too many great and influential games to me that I simply couldn’t narrow it down to just one, two, or even three in some cases…lol. Like I said, I may have gone a bit overboard…lol. Also, making this list has just further highlighted to me why arbitrarily dividing games up by year just doesn’t make much sense. What’d be better would be, rather than a “game of the year” list, to have a “games of the console” list, where you list your top 5 or so games per console. Might not work out as nicely for people who play a lot of multiplatform stuff, I guess, but it’d work great for Nintendo-exclusive gamers like me.
 
I keep track of my own personal game of the year since 2001 and my rule is no going back and changing it - gotta stick with what you thought at the time no matter what. So everything pre-2001 would be retroactive for me.

I was thinking the same, but things could get a bit complicated because sometimes the same game is listed in various years as people took into account the release dates from different regions. That could be an issue!

Aside from what I mentioned above, assuming the games' titles are written correctly and in the same way, it shouldn't be too hard to code something like that as long as one has access to the posts in their pure text format. I assume bellydrum has that power.

@chocolate_supra neat list here too! As a fellow Y-LIL megafan I'm hard pressed to choose between that and Luigi's Mansion 3 for 2019. And speaking of mega, I see you have Mega Man X on your list, a game I've been meaning to try out on the SNES Classic for a while now. I'm slowly making my way through the original MM games. I played MM2 in 2014 and am nearing the finish line on MM3. I've been playing it on and off since May. It's mostly enjoyable as a new player but there is a level of early platforming jank to the games for me. Does the X series have the same kinda punishing difficulty and/or jank? I kind of have the impression it's more modern.

Thanks! There are so many more that I wanted to include too but I tried to limit myself, lol. Lots of great Nintendo games that go overlooked and/or underappreciated by most. And yeah, it’s sad that some of these games are just going to stop being legitimately obtainable anymore, and most probably won’t ever be rereleased again… =(

Jank, no. It's much more refined. But it is still challenging. Though I think the challenge is balanced out in the X series by the improved movement, more robust moveset, and additional upgrades (there's more than just the stuff you get from bosses). I enjoy playing through X a lot more than the original series.

Thanks for the info! That sounds much more in my wheelhouse for sure. I love challenging platformers. It's just the combined difficulty and charming jankiness of the original MM that means I use save states much more and I think I find it part fun and part intriguing gaming curio.
