Surely we must be getting one soon as the last new one was in 2012, 10 years ago this November.
Why do you think Nintendo has taken a break from making 2D Mario?

Wow.... has it really been that long....Nintendo killed Mario last year, don't you remember?
Video game journalists all over the world are looking at this image and collectively screaming in horror:
EPD hiring calls:Biggest plot twist in history of EPD would be that the 2D game EPD Tokyo is working on will be 2D Mario game, just to show EPD 10 how to do it for right. The rumored DK game never existed. EPD 10 next game is Pikmin 4.
According to Kinda Funny, Nintendo considers Mario Maker a different thing to 2D Mario, so the last one was 2012.the last one was 2019
you'll get one next year probably

2D Tokyo will be Hey! Pikmin 2EPD hiring calls:
- October 2019, 2D Action Game (Kyoto)
- October 2019, 3D Action Game (Tokyo)
- August 2020, 2D Action Game (Kyoto)
- February 2021, Splatoon 3 (Kyoto)
Given the gap between the hiring calls, there are likely two different 2D games. It's not out of the question that 2D Mario went to Tokyo; perhaps Nintendo decided EPD 8 and 1-Up in Tokyo, as well as NST in the States, are the development group for the two mainline Super Mario series. But right now safest bet is 2D Mario is still in Kyoto and that the 2D Tokyo game is something else.
And yet it isn’t.New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. For most people the latter is basically a new game
If true, we should change the topic to "Where the hell is Donkey Kong?"The rumored DK game never existed.
I'll play it and be sad it looks so boring and plays so safe despite mostly being a really good game.Nintendo will make another New Super Mario Bros. game and it will be awesome but everyone will complain that it's another New Super Mario Bros. game and won't play it.
Why would they distance themselves from a series that is full of successful and well received games? NSMB DS and Wii sold over 30 million copies, each. NSMBU and Deluxe combined has sold over 20 million units. All 3 of them both original release and rerelease have an 80 or higher on metacritic. Even the worst reviewed and worst selling game (nsmb2 on 3ds) still has a 78 average and sold 13 million copies. If true, we should change the topic to "Where the hell is Donkey Kong?"
New 2D Mario is coming. I'm interested to see if they'll keep the New moniker or if they'll try to distance themselves from that.
I guess to shake things up. I mean, they are still part of the Super Mario Bros. series. These games would sell regardless if it had New in the title. Why would they distance themselves from a series that is full of successful and well received games? Even if they don’t consider it the same thing is still made by the same team Mario Maker existing means 2D Mario has lower chances of getting a new entry (and vice versa once Nintendo makes a new 2D Mario and Mario Maker gets neglected)According to Kinda Funny, Nintendo considers Mario Maker a different thing to 2D Mario, so the last one was 2012.
I don't think there will be another Mario Maker after the sales of SMM2Even if they don’t consider it the same thing is still made by the same team Mario Maker existing means 2D Mario has lower chances of getting a new entry (and vice versa once Nintendo makes a new 2D Mario and Mario Maker gets neglected)
But he was already killed by Ridley back at E3 2018Nintendo killed Mario last year, don't you remember?
Not on Switch, but people really need to get some perspective on how that game sold. It's still a safer bet than the vast majority of Nintendo's IP. There's also a pretty dedicated streaming community for it that constantly promotes it.I don't think there will be another Mario Maker after the sales of SMM2
NSMBUDX (good lord that abbreviation) was a port that launched in January, so I don't think it's fair to compare them.I don’t think a new 2D Mario will reuse the NSMB branding, it will be something new. NSMBUDX’s sales, while great on paper, are a big drop off from DS and Wii so they will probably rebrand it.
I don’t think the release date is the reason for the sales disparity. Lifetimes sales will likely be half that of DS/Wii, despite games like Mario Kart 8 DX, also a port, outselling every Mario Kart game in history.NSMBUDX (good lord that abbreviation) was a port that launched in January, so I don't think it's fair to compare them.
Hope they go back to the drawing board. Series has felt like it was made with a kitset for a long time (because it has been, pretty much). Like, it's been obstinately against innovation - and it's usually been rewarded for it.
Super Mario Bros. Victoryas silly and inaccurate as it would be, I think there's a non-negligible chance they call the next one Super Mario Bros 5
I’ve never really bought into that report that sales was the reason they stopped . My guess is bandwidth issues in general caused them to drop early, same reason why AC didn’t get more. If Nintendo wants to support these games long term then they should probably start making a dedicated team for gaas asset creation.Nintendo counting Maker as separate to the mainline series doesn't change the fact that both series come from the same development leads and are the responsibility of the same part of Nintendo's internal division.
That's "where the hell 2D Mario is": Nintendo don't have the resources to make new mainline entries and Maker at the same time, so Maker temporarily supplanted the mainline series. Like "where the hell is new 2D Zelda", it's a bandwidth issue at EPD. The next 2D Mario has likely been in production since late 2019, given the hiring call at Kyoto came only 4 months after Maker 2's release. We did have the reports from Imran at the time that Nintendo were a little disappointed with Maker 2's sales and decided to drop support for the game so that EPD resources could move to other games.
IMO the comparative sales of the SMB and SMM series suggests SMB will be back at some point. Too much sales potential there to shelve it for too long.Guys, there is an admittedly small part of me that thinks that the Maker series IS the 2D Mario going forward.
