Hello Famiboards Pop-Heads! I wanted to create this thread as a vesicle for all of us Famiboard pop music fans to gather and talk about our favorite pop artists, songs, upcoming endeavors (comebacks, as some would say), or anything else to do with pop music!

A great place to:
• talk about your favorite pop artists’ upcoming releases/eras
• your favorite pop artists’ past MVs/eras/albums/etc.
• pop artists you’re just getting into
• rumblings/rumors about a future pop artists’ comebacks
• literally anything pop. give it a go!

I love talking about music and want to share in that with everyone on the Famiboards. Let's get talkin'

Face card! No cash, no credit...

I'm excited for Dua's comeback but have no idea why she started teasing so early.

I saw Madonna on the 15th, and i've just been on a high ever since then.

oooo yes dua’s comeback is definitely gonna slay. why do you say “so early” tho? is the release confirmed to be far from now?
Not the biggest pop fan, but I have been getting more into 70s/80s city pop.

One of the best pop songs ever? I prefer the not on YouTube Sugar Babe original, but EPOs version is solid.

hmm, the video is showing as unavailable for me 🤨

Troye serving early season Drag Race (complimentary) is very funny to me. I prefer Got Me Started though, that Bag Raiders sample got my attention, so nostalgic.

I've actually been toying with making a k-pop ST for a while but wasn't sure how much interest there'd be, so this will be really good for me to dip in as an envoy from that side of things. I've always been into pop (first albums I ever got myself were Spice Girls and All Saints...hedging my bets in the UK girl group wars), but I got into following Korean stuff about 15 years ago and have just spent more and more time with it. In the past year or so I've picked up some of the confidence to go to dance classes and learn some of the choreo, which has been really fun.

Anyway, because I love video game stuff in music videos, here's Yangyang from NCT using a Gamecube controller in the video for '90s Love. Nobody tell him! At least his controller is for some of the hardware on display in this scene, Winwin is shown using a Dualshock 4. 😭

troye is definitely serving fish in the one of your girls MV lmao.

i have also always been into pop music - most likely because of my mom (and... prob bc i'm gay!) my first memories of anything pop-y are the likes of faith hill though, so more country-pop than anything. my mom lived and died for her back in the day.

k-pop was my absolute obsession in my middle school years! i originally got into it with Gee! from girls' generation - absolute classic. i'm not as into k-pop now but my roommate is very much a fan and since living with him, i've started getting into it a little more again. just recently made a playlist on my spotify of all the older k-pop songs (circa like, pre-2017, so not that old) i loved and it's fun listening to at the gym.

the only k-pop dance i've ever tried to "learn" is psycho from red velvet and INVU from taeyeon, which is mainly just hand movement anyway lol.

SNSD was one of my ins as well! Prior to that it was just BoA and Rain in the early '00s for me. Gee still gets people going crazy at k-pop club nights (I know lol), though I think The Boys and Mr Mr are their best. I was actually super lucky and got to see short sets from Hyo and Taeyeon in Paris this year (including a DJ set from DJ Hyo...that was not advertised and we lost our minds laughing thinking she wasn't even gonna step out from the booth to do Dessert), which was great because INVU is one of my favourite songs in recent years. I really liked the cover Hanbin from ZB1 did of it when he started hosting M Countdown recently - nice intro, and I will always support a fruity idol. Need him to link up with Key.

also lova BoA! and mr mr is 100% one of their bests, that song is a banger.

hyo was actually just recently in brooklyn as well! i didn't see her unfortunately but my friends i think went. i would absolutely lose my mind if got to see taeyeon live, though. she was one of my OG biases when i was still super k-pop fan pilled. i don't think she's ever come to nyc though, at least not recently? are you in paris?

i actually don't know who hanbin is or ZB1, i'll check em out. is key out now, though?!

edit: posting the mr mr MV below for anyone reading who may want to see/watch it! thoroughly recommend!

Gonna be keeping an eye for anyone who wants to gush about Jpop in here 👀

I've been on a city pop kick lately (thank/damn you @Raccoon) so I'm enjoying this

thanks for adding this. loving the vibes! @Phosphorescent Skeleton great taste.

never got into jpop as much as kpop but, a lot of kpop artists end up making japanese specific albums and almost all of them are low-key better than their own korean releases lol. for instance, SNSD's flower power... was so obsessed with it back in the day. paparazzi too omg.

only jpop artist i super got into was namie amuro. ever listen to her?

It's possible I've heard some without knowing the name, what are some good examples?
The artists I was really into were Megumi Hayashibara and Ayumi Hamasaki (the latter of which I know would make me basic as hell in Japan but I'm American so 😅)

i thinkkkk this is one of her most popular?

this is the one that got me into her because it features afterschool which are a kpop group.

unfortunately her label (or maybe it seems a lot of japanese labels) don't seem to like uploading full versions of songs to youtube. i don't get it.

Ugh, Mr Mr's two-step key change just knocks me out every time. Transcendent.

I'm not based in Paris but took a trip in February for a k-pop festival. They're not ideal since the sets are shorter, but not every group tours Europe, and when they do they don't always come to the UK. I saw Twice last month and it was their first ever Europe show, which is mad! So good though, and right after Jihyo's solo song came out so we got a performance of that.

Hanbin and ZB1 (ZeroBaseOne, whew what a name...) are from the survival show Boys Planet. He was the Korean center during the signal song, and a front-runner throughout. He went viral prior to the show because people realised he was a trained waacker and mother. That whole show was extremely camp, to be honest.

Key just had a comeback! It was called Good & Great, which it was.

Gonna be keeping an eye for anyone who wants to gush about Jpop in here 👀

This was a big mood booster for my during early lockdown. Taichi Mukai is so dreamy. Would love more j-pop recommendations from people, I haven't kept up with it much over the years outside of Perfume, Utada and Mondo Grosso.

I still listen to What A Feeling sometimes, loved that one. Her duet with Double, Black Diamond, is a forgotten camp classic imo. "When you meet a guy who's fly, always call him Black Diamond." Okay! I will!

Okay I got some homework to do 🤣

ok not to out myself as being overtly individualistic butttt... i'm actually not a fan of blackpink. YG's artists were never my favorite in general though; i don't love their sound most of the time. same goes for 2NE1, BIGBANG, etc. don't kill me lol.

wow, that mother video was maybe the gayest thing i've ever seen hahaha 💀 that was amazing.

also, when i asked if key was "out" i meant in the "out as gay" sense!

ok, bringing it back to western pop for a second -- anyone a fan of Tinashe? she just released a new album (that i was supposed to see live next week but the tour was cancelled...) and it's so good! this is one of my favorite songs by her from her "Songs For You" album that released a few years ago:

(funnily enough, taken in japan lol.)

I will agree Blackpink have lost it a bit (I think they all want different things now), but I did go see them last year and had fun. Pink Venom was pretty good and grew on me, and not just because Oneus covered it and I'm Leedo's silly rabbit.

YG is definitely an acquired taste, but I like a lot of their acts - Treasure are awesome (Move is one of my favourite songs this year), Winner are often overlooked, and YG also has AKMU (and Somi if we're including Black Label, and if you're not aware of Babyzoo's choreo for her recent comeback you should be!). I also really like iKON, but they've absconded, and good for them. I find YG as a person quite gross and think his persona during survival shows is rancid.

also, when i asked if key was "out" i meant in the "out as gay" sense!

Sadly the only out idol that I know of is Holland. K-pop is in a weird place right now where BL is popular and there's a ton of very homoerotic content but nobody is really out. I hope we're starting to see moves towards openness, though I suspect it will be a long, slow process - and in general, it's an industry and a fandom that doesn't want to know about personal romantic/sexual lives anyway because it ruins the parasocialising and fuels unhinged sasaeng behaviour.

yah i definitely feel like it seems blackpink has hit that point in kpop fame where the individual members are so famous that they are kind of tired of the group thing. which reminds me of f(x) - not that they were ever as popular as blackpink but, they each wanted different things and it kinda dissolved the group over time. much to my chagrin considering they were definitely my fave kpop group back in my time.

as you can maybe also tell from now, i am mainly an SM group stan haha.

yeahhh, it has been that way forever. i feel like suggestive fan service has been a major pillar in kpop culture for forever, so it's certainly a weird relationship that the kpop industry has with gayness.

general discussion point not related to kpop: posted this in the what're you listening to thread but, it must be said again: charli xcx's new song "In The City" is such an ear worm. i don't love sam smith on it but it's good enough for me to overlook that. give it a listen!

They were so right: love is literally four walls. What an album!

Love her! Aquarius and Songs For You are all-time great pop albums, and she's one of those full package artists.

She's never really been given her dues, and it sucks.

f(x) were basically indie darlings! icons.

ugh, so true. i actually got more into her once she went independent. her label definitely dampened her creativity i feel, though some of those bops like 2-On and Superlove are certainly played during a pre-game here and there haha.

Songs For You is seriously so, so good. save room for us, hopscotch, perfect crime, and know better are in my all time faves. did you listen to her new album??

Let me use this post as an opportunity to lament the lack of any good Carly Rae Jepsen merch.
i can't believe i haven't brought up carly slay yet! so many pop queens to talk about.

i've actually never bought merch from any artists. i was recently very tempted by some caroline polacheck merch though... might still snatch that.

I'm unfortunately also one of those people who has travelled to see KPop acts live but it's been a minute since I've done that. I come in and out as new things happen, pretty excited for the next Red Velvet release since their full albums tend to be real great.

We can chat indie pop here too, yes? Because Live @ Radio City by Bleachers is one of my favorite albums this year. It's a 10/10 album, and then once the Juno Interlude track comes on, everything from there on makes it an 11/10 album.

red velvet is up there with my absolute favorite kpop groups. i don’t directly follow kpop news much nowadays so i didn’t realize they had a new album coming!

though if it brings any singles like psycho or bad boy, i will be tuning in.

absolutely! love me some indie pop. i haven’t listened to bleachers very much but i do love the likes of caroline polacheck, no rome, beabadoobee.

the line is really blurred between indie pop and just simply “alternative” for some of these artists though. maybe alt-pop would be a better label?

what do you consider indie pop to be?

Re: Taylor Swift: I'm old enough to remember when she was a country music star (I was in high school), so her complete transformation to "one of the most famous people on earth" is a little surreal tbh. I don't know if I have heard more than 3 songs by her though.

fun thread! i guess i have fairly narrow taste in pop music (pc music & related, 80s-00s jpop, like three kpop groups, some weirder stuff) and generally avoid engaging in anything around the standom/artist-obsessing side of things but still consider myself a fan of the 'genre'

click on this and then listen to the the rest of the album obviously

and I also posted this song in the 'what are you listening to' thread so i know everyone already listened to it there but i'll post it here too—probably my favorite song that's come out this year

How do you think I feel remembering Beyonce Knowles as "that one singer from Destiny's Child who had a guest spot on an episode of The Famous Jett Jackson?"

i remember 'teardrops on my guitar' when i think i was in 4th or 5th grade? didn't really care for her all throughout my childhood until she dropped 1989 and turned more pop - country is just not my vibe.

it is really insane how famous she is now, i agree. one of my friends was obsessed with her in high school when she dropped 1989 so i knew she was already a big deal but, her fame has absolutely exploded since i feel like 2020? she is everywhere.

i actually have listened to a song from the second artist you posted! she popped up on my release radar and i've had her in my playlist for the past month or so. will definitely give your recs a listen.

and you don't have to be a stan/super fan/etc. to post in this thread! i wouldn't necessarily call myself a stan of anyone (reads a little cult-y to me sometimes) but, i certainly am a big supporter/fan of some artists purely bc i love their sound and what they do.

i don't think i remember beyonce ever being anyone but a solo artist. maybe the first song i remember from her is... sweet dreams? definitely a bop of the past:

I'm not a huge pop music fan these days, although I have always had a big soft spot for 80s pop music (and pop music-adjacent) for whatever reason. Probably because I heard a lot of it growing up via my parents. Michael Jackson, Phil Collins, Sting/The Police, Duran Duran, and so on. City Pop is also awesome, as has been mentioned here!

bumping for no reason except this song has been randomly been stuck in my head the last few days and so I’ve been listening to it on repeat this morning. never connected with much of Especia’s other music too deeply but this really is one of my favorite pop (and overall) songs ever. I feel like they predated the city pop/80s funk throwback wave in the mainstream of the last few years by a solid half-decade

wow, i loved this! thank you for bumping my dying thread lol.
I've seen someone with an Emotion shirt once I think.

By the way, "Psychedelic Switch" is one of the best songs of the year, and certainly my favorite pure pop track.
psychedelic switch is a masterpiece of pure pop perfection. enjoyed the loveliest time much more than the loneliest time in general, tbh.

Went to a k-pop concert yesterday and there were girls dressed as blue and yellow Pikmin. 😭 All in all a really fun night! BoyNextDoor, xikers, STAYC (who did a cover of Wannabe!), P1Harmony, Lee Young Ji, Jannabi, Xdinary Heroes and Ateez. Also opened with Yageum Yageum doing k-pop covers on a gayageum. I continue to be really impressed with how strong BoyNextDoor and xikers' stage presence is given how recently they debuted.

Let's talk recent comebacks!

ZEROBASEONE - CRUSH

Nice one. I prefer the verses, but I appreciate the chorus being a racket. The academy outfit with the gauntlet is giving Shin Megami Tensei IV. I know habitual smiler Seok Matthew was fighting for his life filming this and trying to maintain moodiness.

Jungkook - Standing Next To You

"Production was fierce. Choreography was fierce. But cleavage? That was fierce as well." I have to admit I fell off the wagon with BTS after about 2016, but I can't deny that Jungkook is kind of a global pop juggernaut.

Moon Jong Up - X.O.X

This is the last thing I expected from an ex-B.A.P member? An underrated serve.

Don't wanna embed too many videos so will just link to a few others:

Taemin - Guilty
Yep, that's a Taemin song! I really like it but at this point I don't know what to say lol. He does sexy, troubled, and sexy and troubled very well. He looks better than ever here and the bridge is beautiful.

RIIZE - Talk Saxy
The Fifth Harmonization of SM boy groups! Really fun. Need to see Sohee do a collaboration stage with some other main vocalists at an SM concert...

NiziU - Heartris
NiziU's Korean debut, one of their better songs, and weirdly not even the first k-pop song about Tetris this year. The post-chorus is so catchy. I'm comin' down! 잘 돌려보고 pull down!

Finally, we're so close to Red Velvet coming back. 🙏

queens! i thought about being a pikmin for halloween too late... maybe next year.

i watched their incredibly well-directed, shot, and very, very red velvet-esque teaser movie for the album and i'm so hyped. it's like red velvet infiltrated my mind to come up with the exact aesthetic that pulls in me. will post below just in case anyone is interested.

wait! just realized they also released the MV teaser for the single:

I'm more into J-pop myself, since I have been studying Japanese for years now

Here are some of my favorites

UA is awesome, and this song is a classic. Some of her discography is quite experimental

Salyu has an amazing voice, when the beat comes in, it just gives me the chills, don't know why (btw, that's not her dancing in the video)

Hitomitoi used to be a lot more diverse in her discography, and then she switched labels and her new label decided that all she should release from now to eternity is city pop

I'm not usually into idols, but I found this indie idol that makes quite interesting music

And lastly, iri is great. She rose to popularity lately, and for a good reason, her last album Private is just amazing

I hope you enjoy listening to those as much as I enjoyed sharing them, and maybe you'll find a new artist to follow

absolutely will give these a listen! thank you for sharing : )

there were talks about j-pop further up the thread as well. there seems to maybe be a few other j-pop fans on fami. i’ve heard of a few j-pop acts but mainly just know namie amuro and utada (obviously.) i like both of them!

Ayumi, Ayumi, Ayumi. I cannot stress it enough. 😅

Thanks for the recs, @kanpachi - loving all of that and will be checking out more!

Can't believe we've been talking about Japanese pop and I haven't mentioned that Naughty Boys is one of the best pop albums of all time.

Losing both Takahashi and Sakamoto at the start of this year was a huge blow. Protect Harry Hosono!

Really like j-pop when it aligns with my niche interests. Yasutaka Nakata's projects (Capsule, Perfume, Kyary Pamyu Pamyu) are great ofc. Feel like Perfume had a quality resurgence on their last one, this single sounds like a George Clinton co-production and is the funkiest thing releaed in like two decades:

My favourite group's gotta be RAY (and their predecessors ・・・・・・・・・)

With Maison Book Girl (rip) coming a close second

and probably my favourite song of this year is by Neochi

Spinning World is awesome
Love Cloud has to be one of their best releases ever, I could listen to it on repeat forever

Here are some more I forgot to mention last time

poor bird always gets the short end of the stick from Sony, her ״official״ YouTube channel is filled with other stuff that has no relation to her music at all, guess this is what happens when you pick a generic stage name like that

Mika Nakashima is one of the biggest names in J-pop. She's mostly known for her ballads. I deliberately didn't share her two famous ones, since I'd like everyone to see her other amazing music. Her older music has a great jazzy vibe to it

Allie X is awesome

Javiera Mena is a great Chilean artist

i actually also do know perfume! their newer single is so fun and really well produced.

love allie x! i think one of my favorites from her is rings a bell:

New Red Velvet:

Really nice chorus. Listening to the album and the immediate standout for me is Underwater.

Not really sure what SM's game plan is right now, since this is releasing less than a week after aespa's Drama and you'd think they'd want them both to have a bit of breathing room? (Incidentally, I like Drama well enough for its silly chorus and Showgirls style handography, but it hasn't gripped me like Spicy did; feel like this will change when I hear it out and have had a few)

I've only really gotten into Hosono recently, but he's quickly become one of my artistic heroes. Insanely talented man. His Exotica Trilogy are three of my favorite albums.

I mostly listen to his '80s stuff so need to investigate more! My basic take is that I really love Philharmony and especially Sports Men. It's wild how deep everything goes with YMO.
