Playing it now and it's really fun. The intro manga is so self aware and the opening theme's lyrics made me laugh. Great work off Megan McDuffee. The game has a punch-punch-punch combo you might remember from Double Dragon and previous Kunio Kun games as well as a kick-kick-kick combo as well being able to keep on beating enemies when they go down. They've made it so you can change characters on the fly during the combat itself but there isn't any kind of 'select character' thing here, you basically accumulate party members (like Kyoko and Misako, who seem to join events later from where I'm at). Similar to previous Kunio Kun/River City games there's dialogue scenes and it's played pretty straight so far, not really much in the way of funny dialogue at all (they're seemingly trying to keep the more super serious style of the original River City games), so your mileage may vary depending on if you wanted that. Looks to be faithful to the original going by the mood/dialogue. The plot is basically they get blamed for killing someone in a hit and run and they break out to find the real culprits.

Only costs like £12 on the eShop so well worth it for me.

Finished today, took me around 1h 30m.

Unlike the previous super famicom game and RCR in this one you don't gain levels or update your characters, you start with all the moves you need to clear the game and you don't explore anything. All the characters have punch and kick combos, and different especial attacks (which doesn't consume life!). As OP mentioned the other characters are the "lives" similar to what Double Dragon 3 did, you can change any character on the fly, but if you are playing in 1P mode, if anyone dies it's game over (but the game has unlimited continues and plenty checkpoints). Also the story in this one is more serious so besides the original intro an ending manga sequence, there isn't any dialog like in RCG.

Regarding the options avaliable, the game offers original resolution , 2x scalle, full height with crop bars and full width. There is also a CRT filter and 2 borders to choose if you play with the full height option.

Honestly, since it was announced I didn't understand why they named it like this (well I know it's because of the brand name), because the thing is the game doesn't have anything similar at all to RCG (or RCR), even Misaki and Kyoko are pretty much just an extra, and you punish yourself if you want to play with them since they have weaker attacks and take more damage (though Kyoko special kick attack is very good). Overall it is a decent kunio game, but I can see a lot of people are going to be dissapointed if they expect something similar to RCG but retro.
