the backstory here is a bit nuts, a remaster of this game was announced back in 2020. but it was being developed by destructive creations (yes, the Hatred devs) for some inexplicable reason.
putting aside, well, everything about them being a bunch of soulless edgelords. the team had basically zero experience making ports, so it's not surprising the game vanished for a while. with the only real news being that the publisher got changed a few months ago.
meanwhile, about a year prior to those guys getting the project. Kaiser (the lead Kex engine dev at Nightdive) expressed interest in doing his own source port of the game.

evidently these two paths crossed recently, with apogee (they're an entirely separate company from 3D realms nowadays.) recognizing that nightdive would be a far better choice to work on it over the aforementioned edgelords.
as for where New Blood fits into this, a lot of the staff there (including fairly decent person Dave Oshry.) previously worked on the 2013 remake of the game.

and if you'd like to know what this new port brings to the table, you're getting the standard stuff.
  • 4K and Ultrawide Resolution support + Unlimited frame rates
  • All original ROTT episodes and expansion packs
  • Restored game content from "lost" betas
  • Ability to play with 1995 or 2013 Soundtracks + Jukebox
  • Online & LAN Comm-Bat Multiplayer featuring multiple game modes
  • A brand new easy-to-use Level Editor
  • A NEW episode created by New Blood, Night Dive and Apogee Software Veterans
  • LUDICROUS GIBS
and a physical release is in the works, naturally. by the expected team at Limited Run Games.

Excellent post. I was wondering whatever happened to this but didn’t remember who was originally developing it or know anything about them. Nightdive is a clear choice, so this is great news.

ROTT was one of the first games that I had a PC for when it came out. I remember getting the shareware and ordering the CD-ROM as soon as it was available.

The Switch release will be out tomorrow.

"Existing fans will feel so well served by this release that there needn’t be any hesitation in picking it up. Those dipping their toes for the first time should know that it operates in a way that has aged differently to other classic first-person shooters. Whereas Doom's combat and fluidity remain free and immediate, its axis of movement more realistic and its stage layouts more controlled, Rise of the Triad functions around its own, unique design parameters, where violence and abstraction reign supreme. Learn its maps, the versatility of its weaponry, and how to make best use of its playground elements, and there’s a game here with the capacity to enthrall."
