• Hey everyone, staff have documented a list of banned content and subject matter that we feel are not consistent with site values, and don't make sense to host discussion of on Famiboards. This list (and the relevant reasoning per item) is viewable here.

Hello everyone.

In light of the release of the up-and-coming Harry Potter game, that releases this week on current-gen consoles and on Switch later this year, we would like to take the opportunity to make a formal reminder to everyone that we as a community has decided to ban discussion on the game, and the HP series' author, in any form, way and capacity on Famiboards.

This decision was being made during a community discussion that was conducted last year, where the decision came as a result of the outcomes of said discussion, along with deliberation and consensus reached amongst staff. (For the community discussion in question, it can be found here)

This means that we will discourage and moderate active discussion surrounding the game. While we won’t actively target throwaway mentions of the game, we will action things such as:

1. Threads made about the game.
2. Posts that are a direct or indirect starting point for discussion about the game.
3. Meta-discussion about the discourse surrounding the game.
4. Any attempt to discuss the political actions and/or transphobia of the author.
5. Any sort of handwaving, downplaying, ignoring, dismissing or diminishing in regards to any concerns and worries expressed in regards to the transphobia that surrounds the discourse of the game.

We want to outline that we as a site are acting upon this decision because of the connotations, connections and associations the game has with the author - with it being a game tied to a franchise she created, owns and earns money from - and the effect that the discourse surrounding the game and the author can have on our members. The author is someone that is spreading a hateful and misinformed agenda against the trans community on a massive platform, an agenda that has significant, harmful consequences for everyone who is targeted by it. This thread is not a thread for detailed info and heads-ups, so if you’re by any means unaware of what she does to harm and destroy the lives of trans folks, the information you seek is easily found elsewhere.

In our efforts to continue to make sure that this place is as safe and friendly a forum as it can be, we see a vital importance in caring about, and fostering a safe environment for, people of marginalized groups visiting our site, especially the trans community in this instance. The trans community itself is directly harmed and targeted by the author and her actions, and discussion around the game might make trans folks visiting the site extremely uncomfortable, and causes feelings of being unsafe on the site, something we obviously want to strongly work against. While separating art from artist is up for everyone to enact, we can’t guarantee that everyone is able to do that, and likewise, not everyone is able to automatically shield themselves from being disturbed by discussions surrounding the game, the author, or the HP universe in general.

We want to make clear that we do not enact this policy in order to label anyone that buys the game a bigot, nor do we seek to actively antagonize or provoke people who might want to enjoy the game. All that we ask, and are choosing to act on, is for discussion surrounding the game to not take place on Famiboards in order to ensure a friendlier and safer forum experience for the community and the people that are currently being targeted by the author and her actions. If you want to discuss the game, please feel free to do it elsewhere.

For any questions anyone have regarding this decision, we refer to the Moderation Feedback thread, and we sincerely ask for everyone to understand and respect this decision and exercise good judgment.
