Discussion If Nintendo doesn't intend to make a new Star Fox game, why not give Krystal a Dinosaur Planet spinoff instead?

It's no secret that the future of the franchise seems very uncertain. It's likely been vaulted like F-Zero was for the longest time. Personally, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to do a remake/remaster of Assault, and get feedback towards making a new game on the Switch successor... but I digress. Let's just assume Furukawa took one look at the SF Zero and Starlink flops and figured the franchise was radioactive and doesn't want to bother with it anymore. I have a thought for a different game that maybe the Nintendo Ninjas snooping around here might like and report back to HQ (lol).

The popularity of space ship shooters and rail shooters in particular is probably not big enough with modern, younger audiences to justify a full price release of say, Star Fox 64 2: This Time We Really Did It. But the characters are really popular and beloved, and should continue to be showcased. Additionally, Krystal - love her or hate her, or wrongly pin the decline of the series solely on her shoulders - has not been in a Star Fox game since 2006 (!!!), yet is still one of the most notable characters. Not only that, but there are those who insist that Dinosaur Planet would've been better than SF Adventures, and Nintendo stole that from us when it was transitioned to a SF game (again, arguable, but I do wish Adventures retained the dual protagonist roles and expanded story).

Well, why not revisit that idea now? Third person action adventure games are all the rage, Krystal's still popular even though she hasn't been around in a while, traditionalist fans consider her an outlier to the franchise to begin with, and Dinosaur Planet never saw the light of day so she never got her co-starring role...

Why not give her a solo spinoff title? Make it a Soulslike or something akin to Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Make it a third person action adventure game where you explore Sauria. It doesn't need to be based on Dinosaur Planet, but it could take some inspiration from it here or there, particularly the lush tropical landscapes, the dinosaur tribes, and the Krazoa lore. They could even tie in the Cerinia backstory somehow. Maybe they could bring back the dual protagonist element with an optional drop in/drop out Player 2 like in Luigi's Mansion 3 or the Kirby games.

It wouldn't even have to be directly tied to the Star Fox games in a major way, and could be its own series. They could call it Dinosaur Planet if they retained the rights to the IP. Regardless, I think it'd be interesting to see Krystal get her own solo game. What do you think?

I'd be in favour of it, if only because Nintendo can use it to workshop new ideas and experimental mechanics. I would love to see Nintendo exploring more tight-knit third-person action adventure games that aren't named Zelda. This can be a new IP that can rely on union-signed voice acting and cutscenes, and have more of a direct (and shorter) story to tell

I'm not saying it has to be furry/dinosaur Uncharted (although I'm strongly in favour of the dinosaur motif nevertheless), but a game like that has replayability from a short but sweet compelling story, changeable difficulty settings, and a reason to aim high for leaderboards when it comes to mission completion times, enemies defeated, minimal lives lost in the process, unlockable outfits, that sort of thing.

...although in typing all of this out, is Krystal owned by Nintendo, or Rare? Isn't that the bigger hurdle to clear over ownership?

Usually the lack of a Nintendo game isn't just on account of lacking in a new hook to evolve a series, it's getting a studio to actually do it. I don't know how many are itching at the opportunity to do a Krystal game.

Nice write-up. As someone who tends to prefer the animal mascot platformers, I'd be interested in a game like that, but it just doesn't seem very likely to happen, unfortunately. I don't even know whether Nintendo would be up for porting Star Fox Adventures itself. I'm mainly wondering when and how they'll end up bringing this IP back in general.

I still haven't tried F-Zero 99 btw, but I've been reading along, and if there's ever a Star Fox 99, I can't wait to be as annoying as possible and keep voting for the same stage, in order to hear this over and over again. No regrets!

Given that Nintendo's last Star Fox game was Star Fox 1 for a third time, I really wonder how invested anyone aside from Miyamoto is in any of the characters beyond the core Star Fox 1 cast.

Hey, I’m all for it. I should probably play Star Fox Adventures one of these days..

Honestly, I think I'd be UK for this. There's probably room for a more aventurey mascot platformer game or two, and she's basically orphaned from the Starfox series given the tendency to just reboot it every game.

Meanwhile, for the mainline series, just do Starfox 3 as a better version of 2.

oh boy reintroducing Krystal with the current internet would sure be something to behold.

Current internet doesn't even need a reintroduction, honestly. She's already known in those circles.

The problem I see with this is simply, why use Krystal or the Star Fox IP? She's a supporting character from a franchise that has been on the decline for decades. Why not just use a popular character like Zelda?

Who owns the Dinosaur Planet IP, Nintendo or Rare?

As it has already been stated earlier in the thread Nintendo isn't really interested in making a Star Fox game let alone a Star Fox spin off, I would love to see Krystal come back though.

I wouldn't be against it, but I have to echo the question of who would approach Nintendo with a pitch for an Adventures sequel, or conversely, who at Nintendo loves Krystal enough but yet it is only now is the time they push for a Krystal-led entry to be done by... insert studio here.

I can't really agree with the claims that Nintendo isn't interested in Star Fox, though. I think it is just in a similar boat to some other franchises in that it is a lower priority due to the lack of available staff. If they didn't care about it, they wouldn't have kicked down Ubisoft's door and demand they put the characters into Starlink.

Iirc, Nintendo owns all of Star Fox Adventures' elements, except the Rare logo at the intro screen lol

Then-Star Fox producer and character designer Takaya Imamura redesigned Krystal from the Dinosaur Planet version into what she is now, so I think that there's a difference between his version, and the original cat-like version. Recently, former Rare dev Kevin Bayliss painted the original version of Krystal for a Twitch giveaway, and I think it was because the other version is Nintendo's design (or he just preferred his original take on her).

Because Star Fox Adventures came out more than 20 years ago and wasn't a particularly beloved game then or now?

don't think you can find a single person who thinks that the problem with Star Fox is they didn't make enough Adventures.
I keep expecting to see your iconic avatar from before with the 46 different elements to it, and it still trips me up when I realize it's not there anymore.

Because the original game, Dinosaur Planet, was mostly a Rare original concept. They would need to ask Microsoft's permission to use the originally intended ideas Rare was going to do with Dinosaur Planet.

So...yeah. To put it summarily, that spin-off you speak off was already done, but never released, and would require Microsoft's permission.

Nintendo already has too many popular rule34 characters

Also, love that there's always a panic over female characters because, gasp, people might make, shudder, pornography.

...While we're on the subject. I have a confession. I didn't know that Assault existed for the longest time. I thought we went from Adventures to Command. I spent all of middle school assuming all the Krystal key art for Assault were high-quality pin-ups someone made for their Krystal fansite, because they felt too horny to be official.

don't think you can find a single person who thinks that the problem with Star Fox is they didn't make enough Adventures.
Star Fox Adventures is only, like, the 3rd most controversial entry in the series at this point. Sometimes 4th! It's actually probably one of the more liked games, at this point.

Is it not so controversial because it's generally liked, or because people generally agree it's not that good 🤔

You're more likely to be sued by nintendo by simply having the name mario or luigi than have another star fox game
How about we do a bet. I legally change my name to Mario you change your name to Luigi. If a Star Fox game is announced in the next 5 years and neither of us get arrested you lose. Deal?

oh boy reintroducing Krystal with the current internet would sure be something to behold.
I mean, there's probably way more Fox and Wolf shipping stuff out there. Not to mention, more popular Nintendo IP have way more of that kind of content.
Nintendo already has too many popular rule34 characters
Yeah like entire Zelda cast, Mario characters, Pokemon trainers, Fire Emblem lords, Xenoblade characters...

For real. Krystal's female, a furry and is coded to be attractive (the "vixen" trope) so of course the three put together makes people lose their minds.
Krystal is popular largely just because of pornography. She was a weird, sexist, overly horny character from a very weird, sexist, horny era of video games.
Username checks out lol

But seriously, like I addressed to another poster, the Rule34 Star Fox content is far far less prevalent than many other popular Nintendo IPs. Krystal is also no more baity in design than say, Chel from Road to El Dorado, Kida from Disney's Atlantis, or Urbosa from Breath of the Wild.

This feels like trolling but I'll feed ya.

The game scored well at the time, and was one of the early million+ sellers on the Gamecube (almost 2 mil, in fact). It's controversial for being a "just okay" Zelda clone, but that's pretty par for the course for Rare games of the era being their own takes on Nintendo formulas. Heck, at the time, Adventures was only the third 3D Zelda-style game, since Wind Waker wasn't even out yet.

Over time it's gotten a reputation for being trash from the echochamber of people who detest that it wasn't a railshooter, or feel that anything that isn't a near masterpiece from the pre-digital era isn't worth revisiting. There are plenty of hidden gems or games that are absolutely solid and flawed but worth playing.

Unironically who’s gonna make it

I wouldn't be against it, but I have to echo the question of who would approach Nintendo with a pitch for an Adventures sequel, or conversely, who at Nintendo loves Krystal enough but yet it is only now is the time they push for a Krystal-led entry to be done by... insert studio here.

Maybe NextLevelGames? Retro (after they finish Prime 4)? If looking outside the Nintendo studio system, they could try Playtonic, perhaps? Or the Kena devs, since that was a template I suggested they use. There's possibly other devs out there that aren't obvious first choices.

I don't think this is true. Once DP became SFA Nintendo got ownership of the entire concept. Still, I don't think they would ever revisit this idea but I am 99% sure that Nintendo would not need Microsoft's permission if they wanted to use this concept. Krystal is a Nintendo character so is everything else.

Because there are already a plethora of Zelda games out there, including spinoffs. And those come with expectations that could be limiting. Why not try something different? Expand their portfolio with more variety in IP. It's how they got Splatoon instead of Mario Paintball or whatever. I'm not saying this would be the equivalent, but it'd be something different than the usual Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Kirby etc. spinoffs they publish.
Because the original game, Dinosaur Planet, was mostly a Rare original concept. They would need to ask Microsoft's permission to use the originally intended ideas Rare was going to do with Dinosaur Planet.

I dunno if I made it clear in my original post, but the thinking I had was that it was more inspired by the basic concept of Dinosaur Planet's jungle world with talking dinos, and if they had the rights, they could use direct elements. I'm mostly just thinking of a jungle and dinosaur-themed action adventure game featuring her, because I feel there's plenty of potential with the character, setting and lore, that has been underutilized. If they can get the Dinosaur Planet name and trappings to use for it, cool! But honestly they could just as easily call it something with Sauria in the title, since that's not trademarked to Microsoft as far as I know.

I think Krystal's return at all is largely contingent on someone other than EPD bringing the series back.

Krystal is popular largely just because of pornography. She was a weird, sexist, overly horny character from a very weird, sexist, horny era of video games.
I like Krystal because she's quite different than the usual four morons. I like her design, but... just because I think it's a good design. I actually don't like the Adventures one very much, it's really on the nose. I like the Assault one, I think that's a depiction that meshes well with the rest of the SF crew.

Yeah she's designed to be attractive... welcome to most of pop culture. I just like that there's a blue, British, psychic, female, staff-wielding fox on the team... that's what I think is neat.

I would say it's 90-95% pornography.
Yeah but you have no actual statistics

Nintendo already has too many popular rule34 characters
Well this is a character that already exists, so good news, it wouldn't increase the count.

l don’t really see the point of making a spin off when the mainline series is languishing in its current state. If they wanted to make a linear action adventure with a female protagonist they can just do that. There's no reason to revisit an old concept for it. Tying it to an IP that has massively waned in popularity and a character that is controversial at best would also have little to no benefits and would actually be counterproductive

Is it not so controversial because it's generally liked, or because people generally agree it's not that good 🤔
The game has a dedicated fanbase, but it isn't very good or well liked in general I think.

Also, people showing their whole ass with equating female characters to = lol people draw porn. Very classy fami family.

Personally if they’re gonna revive a dormant Nintendo-era Rare project I rather they do Donkey Kong Racing, even more so now that the style of Zelda Dinosaur Planet was emulating has been done to death.

imaaigne they revive f zero as a farming sim.

thts the kind of reception you should expect ftom a krystal focused adventure game as the next star fox game.

The reactions to the mere thought of having Krystal in something new is always so stupid.

Krystal is not a taboo as people make out to be. This shit was always crazy to me lol

And besides, she was right there in Smash Ultimate. Nintendo has no issue with her.
