Pre-Release Endless Ocean Luminous — Pre-release Discussion Thread

Not open for further replies.
wait, they did previews for a game that's been out for twenty years and skipped them for something new?
Apparently! But to be fair, Nintendo may specifically not want to do previews for this game in an effort to preserve more of the game’s element of discovery for players at launch. Or it could just be because it’s a smaller release, I guess…

Seems to be the case, otherwise they’d likely have announced it alongside the overview trailer. So no game demo, but we get a free 7-day trial of Nintendo Switch Online with the game, which you could argue is kind of a “demo” of sorts, technically, lol.

Someone in the First-Party thread claims it's indeed running on Bezel like the 99 games but no source was provided.

I pre-order many Nintendo games because I know my tastes and trust the teams making and marketing the games that speak to me. (Plus, sales are few and far between.) However, having never played an Endless Ocean game and wanting to know what the single-player Story Mode is going to entail this time around, I'm just patiently waiting for some kind of media coverage. Previews would have been nice, but I guess I'll wait for reviews instead. Of course, there's no real reason to pre-order this game, especially since I'll be going digital. This game is just an outlier in my Nintendo buying habits.

I assume the source is checking the Intellectual Property Notices menu on digital preorders, since those are live now. I’ve preordered mine physically, though, so I can’t confirm.

I just watched the japanese overview trailer out of curiosity and I've noticed some cool things that do not appear in the american one:

  • Marker emojis for two different especies of penguins, polar bear, dog and horse.
  • A sixgill shark attacking the player with a tail smack (same animation as the other two games).

I am now 95% convinced the marketing is definitely underselling and that they are operating in their classic "un-spoily" way. I think they will deliver.

I guess it is true that nobody cares about Endless Ocean.
Huh? C’mon, no previews doesn’t mean no one cares. Plenty of people in this thread care, and Nintendo certainly cares otherwise they wouldn’t have green lit the game in the first place. Not all Nintendo releases end up having previews. For example, I don’t believe Another Code: Recollection had them, either. It won’t really matter once reviews hit and the game launches, anyway. I think part of it may just be that Nintendo doesn’t necessarily expect many people to be rushing out to get this game on launch since it has a more casual appeal to it.

I was being sarcastic. I'm actually glad there's no previews because that means less spoilers.

So I saw from Wario64 on twitter that Play-Asia is doing this 3 for $100 free shipping worldwide, and this includes Nintendo's upcoming games for cheaper than here in the US.

...Paper Mario TTYD and Like a Dragon Gaiden were my first two, but I see Forever Blue Luminous on here for $37 so I got it. Curiosity has gotten the best for me, and hopefully I'll end up enjoying it.

a "StarTopic"—basically the main thread for a game once it's been released. usually someone signs up in advance here to create the thread for an upcoming game, but it doesn't look like anyone's claimed this one yet.

Oh, cool. Well, I won't. I am kinda unmotivated after all the fuss I went through because of that damn video I shared, who knows if I'm being disliked or "ignored" by some. I'll leave that to someone else, but I'll gladly watch.

Hopefully you do, man. If you're into vibes and discovery, this game is capable of leaving you in awe and fascinated at any possible corner of the ocean. Things like, swimming through the open waters while seeing nothing, then you turn around, or up, or down, and see very close to you a massive creature, or a legendary creature.. if you feel chills in that moment, you did right.

Wait, what? Are you saying you can get 3 for $100 with free global shipping on Nintendo's upcoming games? Like, if I wanted TTYD, LM2 HD, and Endless Ocean, I can bundle those 3?

one more week! is anyone planning on doing an ST?
If no one ends up making a proper ST at launch and there still isn’t one after awhile, I may make one for it eventually like I did for amiibo and Samba de Amigo: Party Central, but I don’t really care to make an ST for a game at launch ’cause I’d much rather be spending that time playing the game than making and maintaining an ST for it, lol.

Finally got around to upscaling the original E3 2007 trailer for the original game:

Let you arms enfold out, through the dark of night...

Hmm, on further inspection it's not very good. Somehow IGN's upload is a bit better, and my similar job with Barrel Blast's trailer came out borked and IGN's version is much cleaner despite also being 360p. Might just do the same with those versions instead. Wish I knew where IGN got their versions.

Thanks! I do think I will, but just unsure of how long I'll play it. The online aspect seems really cool in a laidback casual way.

Yep, pretty wild deal. Wario64 is the goat of the game sales.

this game is out next week and I still can't order it on amazon
Yeah, I wouldn’t count on being able to get it from Amazon at this point. Something’s clearly up with that, as you can no longer preorder any upcoming Nintendo games from Amazon.

Why not just get it from another retailer (and a less shitty one, at that), like Best Buy?

That's crazy. If I didn't need TTYD on release day, I would totally spring on this deal, but that's a non-negotiable and I know Play-Asia takes 10-12 days later to ship to the U.S. I'm also not fully sold on Endless Ocean yet, having never played the series and trying to focus on my backlog right now

Yeah that's why I'm jumping on it for TTYD and Endless Ocean Luminous as a bonus. I'm excited for the TTYD remake but I don't need to play it day one.

Worst case for Endless Ocean, I can just sell it for cheap later on if I'm not into it.

Nice! Which game is the 3rd choice in your bundle?

I’m excited for this. But it feels like a weirdly muted game launch. I don’t get Nintendo sometimes.
It’s a relatively niche, discovery-based game that Nintendo likely isn’t expecting a ton of people to be lining up for at launch. I’m guessing they’re in part betting on word of mouth from players once the game launches. If the online experience is as good as they seem to believe, given how confident they appear to be about it since they’re giving everyone who buys the game a free 7-day trial of Nintendo Switch Online which they’ve never done with a game before like this, then I imagine plenty of people will be trying to get their friends to pick up the game to play with them. Regardless of that, though, this is a more causal game, and games like that don’t tend to be as front loaded in sales at launch, so Nintendo probably sees little reason in promoting the game too much right now. They want to save a lot of that discovery for players to experience firsthand, after all.

Random question. I never played a game in this series before. Are there any fail states? I think this would be a great game to let me 4 year old and 2 year old mess around with.

In previous games, there has been an air meter that acts as a timer. The "penalty" for running out of air has just been that you get taken back to your hub and just have to dive again.

In the second game, there are some aggressive animals that can attack your diver, like sharks. It isn't confirmed if that is also present in Luminous or not. There isn't a health meter or anything, so I think the attacks just drained some of your air? It has been a minute since I have played the second game, but if it were back it would likely function similarly.

Those are the only things that come to mind for me.

"I thought it was a work (game) to enjoy the diver life freely until I played it, but this work (game) has a solid main story. It is a mechanism that the more you investigate the sea and "unveil" many creatures, the more the story will be released."

Looks like the first review has dropped!!

That definitely answered quite a few questions. Thanks for sharing!

I tell you what else I find really odd.

I do actually scuba dive and keep up with scuba diving stuff. And Nintendo don’t seem to have entered this space at all.

It’s quite rare there’s a diving game. I expected more promotion with scuba youtube / sites. Some link up with PADI or NAUI. I haven’t seen any. I’ve not seen any link up with Cressi or other equipment manufacturers. It seems like a massive missed opportunity!

I wonder if you can get proper branded scuba items in the game? Seems like a win win for everyone involved.

Nice. Honestly odd and, in a way, refreshing how little we know of this game before release. Glad to see it's not just because it's barebones.

what was the score?

From Nintendo Life:

Now, before we get into the negative stuff, let's start by pointing out that if you're looking for an incredibly low-energy, low-effort sort of gaming experience where all of the focus is on simply scanning marine life and then reading a tiny informational excerpt about each of them in order to expand your underwater knowledge, this is 100% the game for you.

Great! Excited to play it

Not exactly expecting high marks. Mainstream gaming outlets aren't exactly known for taking kindly to games where the point isn't something typically game-y. Which was already a thing we went through for the first one, where EGM made a point to grand stand about dissing "non-games" for several months, entirely spurred on by their apparent dislike for what Endless Ocean represented, in spite of giving Forever Blue 2 a positive review as an interesting import title.
