Discussion Antonblast releases on Nintendo Switch and Steam - demo today. Game release on November 12

Glad to finally have a release date. Looking forward to taking this for a spin later today.

I love it how Anton wears red and green, the other complementary color duo like Wario's yellow and purple. This is a love letter to Wario land 4 without being a complete clone of it, I love it.

"We have Pizza Tower at home!"

That's not fair, of course, I remember seeing the Kickstarter for this years ago, and I'm glad it's coming, and I'm glad that there are devs tapping the Wario Land vein. Hopefully this being a console exclusive and coming to Switch before Pizza Tower will give both games room to breathe and grow.

Is this game mega fast paced like the trailer made it show? I can't really do Sonic fast. I know Wario games could be faster at times but not usually as mega fast as this trailer. I thought I remembered this one was going to be regular platforming speed with some faster sections or options.

You can absolutely play it much slower, the devs just like to show off how fast you can go in the marketing. But it's very fun even if you take your time.

Hey, at least this dev isn't a piece of garbage as far as we know!

The only downside is that November feels so far away. But I'll be there for it day one.

Here's hoping Wario-likes become as abundant as Metroidvanias.

Demo is (unsurprisingly) an absolute blast. It's definitely not going for Pizza Tower levels of speed but the skill ceiling to go fast is still pretty high thanks to the clutch mechanics and it's arguably more magnitudes of extreme and chaotic. It's the kind of game where I'll get myself into trouble, mess up platforming, or break my combo more often than not simply because I feel compelled to use some of the addictive mechanics like bouncing. It's also really presentationally polished, it feels like a high production value GBA game. That Kickstarter money was absolutely well spent.

Has all the signs of a classic in the making, November is going to be an agonizing wait for what already feels like it could become my personal GOTY.

Nice! Thanks for the info! Do you need to speed up a lot for certain sections or goals?

You'll need speed to jump across some large gaps and your main attack is tied to a speed burst. Think of it kinda like the boost mechanic in modern Sonic games, except maintaining that speed takes more execution so it's a lot less necessary. There's a few gimmicks that rely on speed as well overall, but much of the game is also just precision platforming.

There's Wario Land 4-type escape sequences but they're relatively generous about the time you get to escape, I seemed to have a lot of time to explore around and go between rooms (PT was on the much more unforgiving end).

You can play the demo to get a feel for it, it's not a game you need to rush unless you're playing for good score considering there's a few explorable puzzles and collectibles.

As an aside, this game has to have the most violent rumble in a game I've experienced when playing in handheld. I still feel a tingle in my hands after putting the game down lol.

Please refrain from downplaying harmful language as nothing more than "bad jokes". The posts in question have been perceived as harmful by many users and should be treated as such. - ngpdrew, Zellia, Party Sklar, BassForever
Aww, is the dev of Other Game ungood?
Said some somewhat questionable things in a Discord like over 5 years ago, but they don't even really come off as intentionally malicious, just bad jokes.
Has not really done anything like that since, to my knowledge.

Plus a lot of Summitsphere staff are in the credits of Pizza Tower too.

EDIT: did not really mean for this to come off as downplaying, I think what McPig said really sucks. Just that a bunch (not all) of what he said were really shitty attempts at humor. Attack Helicopter-tier stuff with slurs thrown in. Jokes still can hurt and be malicious. But given how this behavior did not continue (to my knowledge at least) even before the first polished demo with the SAGE 2019 demo, I would imagine he's changed since then, even if he did actually mean what horrible things he said. I mean, one of the lead composers he continues to work with goes by any pronouns, so I have a hard time imagining that he's transphobic now at least.

Anyways, aside from that, demo's great! Similar to the last demo, same levels and everything but it's great to see how the game has been shaping up and getting even more polished. Feels much closer to VB Wario Land/4's design than Pizza Tower gradually doing it's own thing, not to imply unoriginality, just fills the hole in my heart in a different way. Noticed a few frame drops on Switch in Cinnamon Springs, but I imagine that'll be ironed out by release, they've got like 7 months.

Really sucks this isn't out till November, but it looks fantastic. Hate seeing so many people say it's a Pizza Tower rip off when these were in dev at the same time, in fact this might have started first.

Played the demo, a lot of stuff is great, but I kinda feel the moveset is a tad bit too complicated for its own good maybe? Don't mind stuff like that in a Metroid-like, but in a platformer I feel like it's always better to keep it as simple as possible.

Nah, this one started in November 2021. The oldest Pizza Tower demo is from 2018.

I will warn that this game is pretty brutal. Both escapes in the demo are as close as the hardest Pizza Tower ones, and far beyond anything in Wario Land 4 on normal difficulty. The levels are incredibly long and demanding, like if you took a Wario Land 4 level with the full extent of its exploration and combined it with an especially complex Tropical Freeze level that had like five mechanics and was determined to fully use all of them. You get the full brunt of both approaches to level design, which feels unusual to me. Not for the faint of heart.

Better judge for yourself

If anyone is wondering, this is the only response he gave to this post:

Yeah I grabbed this from the subreddit. You don't want to see the reddit post this picture came from.

I feel overwhelmed by this game, but it’s so fun. Hard to follow where my character is, but loved the demo.

Tried a bit of the demo. There's a lot to do in every part of the stage and sometimes it can be too much, not to mention that the controls are not as intuitive as I would like.

I don't know, it doesn't seem to have the elegance of Wario Land so far.

I enjoyed the original demo from the kickstarter a lot, I've had my eyes on this for what feels like years. I'm absolutely thrilled that it has a release date now.

Yeah, I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. It’s difficult to parse what’s happening on screen at times, and having the hammer smash/bounce doesn’t feel reliable (sometimes I wanted to bounce off a platform but the character landed and dashed instead).

Hopefully that all gets sorted out by November.

Yeah, it definitely has a higher entry point then something like wario 4, and some of the moves seem to kinda do similar things.

For a demo it felt somewhat to ... Hectic.

Ahhh ok, for some reason I thought this one started first. Either way I know both devs encourage each other and hype each others games. Can't wait to try the demo tonight.

Turn down the screenshake in options if you think the game's too chaotic. That's basically the main contributor to the "hectic" feel. Game is pretty readable otherwise. It's fine to take things slow with it and play it more like a regular platformer.

You don't need to time the hammer for the landing to bounce, you only need to press it again once airborne and then your next land will automatically initiate a bounce. Using the hammer while you land transitions into a boost.

I wonder if we'll ever get a fan copy of any of the first three Wario lands instead of four. even the spinoff land games that came after 4 are just like 4 but 3D or with motion controls

In feel, this game is very much more Virtual Boy Wario Land, it just also has escape sequences.

Agreed. I also felt visually it was very busy and cluttered, which can be problematic in a fast paced platformer. But I enjoyed it and I’ll most likely buy the final game.

The dev is on era and this is what they said on the Pizza Tower devs:

"For what it's worth, we were not aware of certain past posts from the Pizza Tower lead during prior collaboration, and we of course do not agree with the sentiments held in those posts. I completely understand peoples' hesitancy but we could not be further from those beliefs as a studio and a unit.”

I'm actually just now learning about the Pizza Tower devs statements, disgusting stuff. Kind of glad I never bought the game now, will be getting this though.

The game's named after me so I will buy it. Them's the rules.

Very uncomfortable to see all the "lmao Pizza Tower 2" comments that are actively dismissive as if every retro shooter now is "lol they're trying to be dusk at home" or something. At least actually joke about it being Wario Land 4 Part 3 since that's where it actually gets its DNA from.

Good to know!

Can't wait for november

Really impressed by the demo. Last time I truly was impressed by a 2D indie platformer was Celeste.

It feels super nice to control, the level design is great (especially in the second, more challenging level. Absolutely crazy stuff), and I looooove the sound design. Very much inspired by Wario Land 4 too by how absurd the sounds are (it even uses the same types of random samples like a dog barking or some other bullshit like that)

Gonna have to try the demo for this. In theory, I'm up for Wario-likes... But when I tried Pizza Tower I found it quite annoying, it felt much more like 2D sonic (which I can't stand). The fact that you're pretty much playing to get a good time since the beginning made me feel bad about exploring, and frustrated whenever I would make a mistake.
To be fair, the timed escape from the level of the part I enjoyed the least from Wario Land 4. I understand why other people may enjoy it, but it wasn't my cup of tea.

Really crossing my fingers that I'll enjoy this lol

played the first stage of the demo, it's seriously cool. i love all the casino-themed touches and how over-the-top chaotic it is. the way the tutorial text pop-ups look really makes it feel like an authentic third-party GBA game lol. the controls have a bit of a learning curve (a good thing for a platformer imo) but the whole thing is so fluid and crunchy

Pizza Tower's ranking system is not based on time at all, aside from a couple of the ending images which are just there like Metroid. Don't feel bad about making mistakes, P ranks are just an extra challenge designed for end game. Here though I think the exploration is much more emphasized, maybe not to the degree of Wario Land 2 or 3, but you will usually be rewarded for seeing something off and it's much more often.
