Seeing all the new Sonic-inspired fan/indie games makes me realize, I don't see nearly the same fervor for Mario-likes, so I wonder if it's because people just don't find Mario all that inspiring anymore, or because people want Sonic to go in a different direction so they're fine-I'll-do-it-myself-ing it, or maybe they just feel there's no point trying to out-Nintendo Nintendo at this point.

(Rolling Rascal does say it's somewhat Mario inspired, but the Sonic influence seems stronger IMO)

The Sonic fangame scene goes way back, and Sega has always been fine with it. Mario's equivalent scene is mostly confined to romhacking of World and 64, as well as the Maker games, possibly because Nintendo hates fangames. It's also worth noting that many full games have come out of these scenes, but they're rarely something which resembles an actual Mario game. A lot of kaizo and other stuff.

It is weird historically how few platformers like Mario actually exist though, while there are countless Sonic also-rans from the 90's. It's mostly just DKC and Rayman Origins/Legends, plus classic Sonic and Crash to some degree. Maybe the original Giana Sisters game was an actual clone? The modern one isn't really that similar.

Actually, Newer Super Mario Bros. DS is a full Mario fangame of sorts that I played, and at least half of it is better than the game it's based on. Unfortunately the difficulty is more akin to DKC2 than your typical Mario, which is fine for most of the game and even refreshing, but the last two worlds are really overtuned and frustrating. One problem is that the original game already occasionally pushed up uncomfortably against the limits of what the kind of bleh NSMB DS controls could handle. Later iterations of New Super Mario would feel noticeably better to play, there's a sluggishness to DS that almost recalls the inertia of the original Super Mario Bros.

most sonic games are mid so why not try your hand at making a good one. whereas with mario it's a steady stream of all timers. why would I pick up a mario-like if the real deal is there and also good.

I think a lot of it comes from the dissatisfaction Sonic fans have had toward the directions Sonic has taken in the post-Dreamcast era, leading to, like you say, a sort of fine-I'll-do-it-myself movement. And that movement then culminates in some projects that many fans (myself included) tend to look at and go "damn, why can't Sega make something more like that??" Even the snippet I'm seeing of Rolling Rascal has me going "Sega lookit this level design plz," which is the same reaction I had a year or so ago when I first saw Spark the Electric Jester 2 and 3, or even further back, when I saw Freedom Planet.

I don't think Mario fangames get the same sort of following (or even the same desire from fan devs to make) because Nintendo has been consistently churning out the types of Mario games that we do want. Even their small-scale 2D Marios from their C-team are becoming big hits. There's just no power vacuum with Mario so nobody's trying to fill it with Mario-likes.

It probably also helps that Mario Maker exists, which at least to some extent also fills that "I want a Mario but not the way Nintendo does it"-niche.

Hiya! I’m new here. Saw the November thread near the end but wanted to wait til a fresh new thread to chime in with my first post. Currently playing Baldur’s Gate 3 and gonna pick up Dragon Quest Monsters today.

Welcome, welcome! Dragon Quest Monsters is cosy as hell, perfect game for the cosy season. Great choice!

I'm looking forward to playing BG3 myself once it drops on Xbox.

Stop trying to make me buy Dragon Quest Monsters!!!!!!
Feels weird that a new DQ game is out and I'm not even sure when I'll play it

wait, are people still playing this game lmao
I came back earlier this year when they added player progression, then fell off after about a month of that. I'm ready for the next game, hoping they can finally recapture the magic.
Or Gears. Give me a new Gears game.

I wonder if I'll be able to play all the games I still want to finish on my Switch and PS4 next year. Probably not lol

Psh, Halo this, Gears that. Give me a new Otogi, Microsoft. You cowards! Or remake the old ones.

Pay From whatever it takes. I heard you're kinda swimming in it, no?

Microsoft doesn't make games, they just buy studios and sell subscriptions!

Halo Infinite's been having a bit of a resurgence this year after hitting new lows. They have finally been able to put out new content on a regular basis, no in small part do to contributions from the community through Forge. They recently put AI into Forge so people can make custom single player levels, firefight maps, etc. The trailer next week is probably for the official Firefight mode.

I played Infinite at launch and dropped it after a few weeks. The solo had so much wasted potential and the multiplayer mode wasn't even worth the time investment. I can't say I'm in a hurry for the next Halo, they have a good base with the engine but I don't think 343 has the genius to recapture the magic of the first Halo games. Halo 4 was the best of the trilogy and the series dropped in quality with each entry after that for me.
As for Gears, it's been in development for many years so I'm hoping something that will shake up the series a little.

Ay, great thread @MissingNo.!

I finished Alan Wake 2 last night, just in time for Remedy to tease the NG+ update. Is my GotY about to get even better?

Well yes, I think that's true and fair to say.

Love affair with Octopath 2 being soiled by the Dolcinaea battle. Just got KO'd in the second stage. Ugh.
That sucks, buuuut also means you get to listen to the single best game music track of the year some more!
Yeah the boss fights quickly soured me on that game. The boss fights in Persona 5 were shorter!
That’s pretty surprising to me, actually. Especially later into the game, you can start having such crazy broken combinations that most of the time bosses couldn’t stand up to more than one one round of buildup + DPS

I have a boss strategy in the first game that basically melts them except it doesn’t work on the final secret boss

Yeah, this is the only boss I've struggled with and it's entirely because I was aiming to use that chapter to level up my weaker characters. My starting character (Throné) is levelled well ahead of everyone else and would be ideal for this boss, but with her story finished, I wanted to rotate and use the other characters.

On the positive side I went exploring, killed a giant sea monster and unlocked a new job, so I'm sure whenever I revisit that boss I'll have an easier time of it.

Hmm, well, I do plan on giving the game another go once enough time has passed, so maybe I was just playing it wrong or picked the wrong starting character, etc.

So, my mom ordered some flavored coffee grounds and the flavor is banana cream and I am, currently, in heaven. I know some people really don't like flavored coffee, and I get it, and some just don't like coffee at all, and I understand that, so here's my proposal: give all your unwanted coffee to the Storm Dragon. Let me create a magnificent hoard.

...Now that I'm no longer spending an entire month writing a novel, I should get back to video games. I'm thinking of playing Phantasy Star once I finally finish my second playthrough of AoC.

I don’t think you can really play it wrong, it just takes some time to get all the more powerful stuff going. You should give it another shot! I think it’s still my GOTY overall.

I beat Mario RPG last week. It's a really fun game, albeit a little too easy; it honestly makes me wanna play the other Mario RPGs that I have, but I still wanna finish FFXII, first. I'm currently stuck on this really shitty boss and it's kinda killing my motivation to keep playing; probably gonna spend the weekend after work binging some shows.

I started watching Frieren and The Peaky Blinders and they're honestly pretty good, so far. These hopefully won't distract from studying for my Driver's Knowledge test, but I haven't even made an appointment for that, yet.....

If we're talking about cosy games, I guess Soul Calibur? I've been playing 2 and 6 recently and I just bought a used combo pack of SC 4 and Tekken 6 for $18. Out of all the fighting games I've played, SC's 8-way combat is one that I've jived with the most, even more so than Smash or Persona 4 Arena. If I were 10 years younger, I'd probably say Animal Crossing: New Leaf. That game consumed my mornings for over a year.......

Shit's earthy as hell!
What, you don’t like Earth? Are you an alien?!

coffee fans be like "i need to drink 46 cups of coffee everyday or i cant function"
Real talk though, coffee addiction is a thing. If you feel fatigued when you don’t drink coffee, you’ll want to pull it out of your diet for a spell.

A dragon collecting different kinds of coffee… now that’s an idea for a fantasy book.
