NSO Jet Force Gemini releasing on NSO November 30th (JP) / December (US)

Err, wait, shouldn't it be the other way around? Japan is ahead of the US. For example, it's November 22nd in Japan right now but in the US it's still the 21st.
... yeah, no, you're right, I had that backwards. So now I've got no clue what they're playing at with that December window (they can't possibly be planning on holding it for a Game Awards drop, right?)

Very bizarre off their usual NSO pattern for revealing new titles but a nice rare surprise.
Increasing the overall odds of them preparing to bring out DK64 and DKR whenever they start their supposed Donkey Kong season/year with how things have been piling up for the big ape.

The 18+ app in Japan for Goldeneye is interesting, wonder if that will also be in NA if there's a possibility of Conker also. The whole N64 Rareware collection back on a modern Nintendo console one day looking better and better by the year

Wild pick honestly, but it likely means we’ll get most Rare stuff eventually which is neat.

Oh boy, I only remember how bad controls where in this game even though I finished back in the day

Really happy we are getting the rare catalogue on NSO. Not only serves as a major improvement from virtual console, but also means that we can continually get major games and not run out immediately like we would have if we only got first party games.

Love Jet Force Gemini. Great soundtrack too.
Though I'd prefer Diddy Kong Racing, but I guess I can pretend I'm playing it in JFG's racing mode on the unlockable
Greenwood Village
track in that.

Now if only we could get Konami onboard too. Hybrid Heaven and Goemon would be great

Oh shit. Wasn't expecting another Rare game. Hopefully 1080 Snowboarding will be a xmas release.

Please let 2024 be the year of Konami n64 games.
From your lips to Konami's ears.

The Goemon, Bomberman and Castlevania games deserve more love. And unless you're going to put 'em in a collection sometime soon, you might as well put 'em on the NSO.

We can get Body Harvest shadow dropped at the end of the GTA 6 trailer next month after that game is announced to be coming to Nintendo’s eventual next hardware.

Any theories for why we got the announcement for a game not on the N64 roadmap before the final game on the roadmap had released?

If they were to do something at The Game Awards, the only thing I can think of is if they showed a new NSO + EP trailer there and it did a "Everyone is here!" thing but with Rare games on N64, plus maybe some special announcements for the other platforms (Mother 3 for GBA?). If Rare was more popular in the West (no idea), maybe that type of announcement would play better at The Game Awards. But I doubt it. This seems odd. If the game releases on 12/1, then I guess it'll just be a social media post quirk.

Well, these are amazing news to wake up to.

This is one of the few Rare games that i consider genuinely good and not just a product of their time and it was one of my usual rentals. Fuck the draconian requirement for the true ending though.

Can't wait.

RE: Controls
Like all 3D genres of that era, JFG was an experimental game and it had some oddities, but it was far from awful and was designed around the N64 controller. There's too much uncalled hyperbole in this thread.

I'm more worried about emulation woes.

Putting the Castlevania duo in the same echelon as Bomberman and Goemon is eeeeeeeeeeh
No, it's not. The N64 Castlevania games were amazing games tainted by a couple of idiot youtubers. They do deserve to be put in the podium of N64 Konami games.

I played the Castlevania games when they came out. They were not good games in 1999/2000 and they have aged like milk.

I did too, i found them great games and great Castlevanias. I also play the first one yearly, and replayed the second recently on Stream.

So... Your point?

You didn't like them, that doesn't make them bad games, just games you didn't like.

Maybe NCL just felt weird about making an 18+ app for the sake of just one game once they realized they'd have to do so in order to release GoldenEye on the Japan NSO service, so they started negotiating for another CERO Z rated game? Also, it's not like this is the first time we've gotten games not on the roadmap (e.g. random Super Mario Advance 1-3 drop for the GBA NSO back in Spring).

Ooh, Jet Force Jemini is also rated CERO Z? Okay, yep, that explanation for why they announced two games for release at once (including one not previously talked about) checks out in my book.

A bit of advice to any JFG newcomer :
The game have two control modes : a free roaming one which controls like any 3D plateformer, and a "Behind the shoulder aiming mode" when you hold R.

This is the mode that helps you freely aim, while the free roaming use an auto aim. It is a very important thing to master this mode.

Absolutely adored Jet Force Gemini back in the day, but I'd probably replay it on Xbox these days. That being said, I do have the N64 controller for Switch, so it would be interesting to give the original controls a spin. It's a pleasant surprise but bizarre that some systems (GBA, Mega Drive, SNES) are going so long without updates.

Hopefully there's a surprise drop for another system this month, given the international apps otherwise wouldn't be getting anything. International N64 also getting Harvest Moon 64 in the future would be good, too.

In another timeline Rare was not sold to MS and you could play Goldeneye, Perfectdark and jetforce gemini with the IR from the wiimote, these games seem to be made for the wiimote controller.

It's an absolutely awesome game until it asks you to pretty much get 100% in order to open the way to the final boss.

I use to love this game, never got very far as a kid though. Definitely going add it to the never ending list of games I gotta play on switch.

The 1st ratchet and clank ever made.. good
Back then I was so desperate to see anything about "Turrican 64 / Thornado" and when JFG was announced, I thought it could be just was I was waiting for, a 3D plateformer shooter.

No wonder I also love the Ratchet & Clank games.

Am I the only person who mixes up Jet Force Gemini with Space Station Silicon Valley?

They're totally different games, I know. But this has been a lifelong thing for me.

I played this earlier today on Xbox. Not sure what's up with the controls there but I had to swap the sticks and invert the left stick (which is now the right stick) in the system setting to even kinda play it decently. Even then it was like controlling a boat when just running around as I have to hold down on the right stick to move forward lol, but at least I could reasonably hold the left trigger to do the third person shooter method as described below:

Hopefully things will be better on the Switch version.

Seriously though the controls are baffling on the Rare Replay version.

Jet force Gemini always controlled like ass, no matter how bad you think the Xbox version is, it was much worse on the n64.

Good luck to anyone trying this out for the first time, is about all I can say.

In the Rare Replay version, you can switch to a new control that was patched after release, but you can't choose it ingame, you have to activate it in the Rare Replay frontend of Jet Force Gemini. It helps a ton.

The most interesting thing is that separate app for Cero Z/ 18+ games, so Conker's can come to NSO without problems

How many Cero Z games there are on N64? RE2 ?
there is no concrete list, CERO was funded in june 2002 and the last game to ever be released for the n64 was just 4 months later
the ratings on goldeneye and jet force gemini are brand new, which is why you can no longer be surprised at jet force gemini being rated higher than bayonetta 3

Ah I did not know, so we can only assume what games are Cero Z, RE2 is 99% Cero Z becuase the of decapitation

Of course Jet Force Gemini releases just as I replayed it, oh well...

Actually... interesting because so far I know if you don't have the actual hardware Jet Force Gemini is a game that was never properly emulated and always dealt with visual glitches so I wonder how this port will play.

Anyway, if you haven't played the game yet you definitely should give it a try. I am not into shooters but this game managed to pull me in like all other Rareware games.

As a kid I had a strange obsession with the keycards specifically, I don't know but they were like jewels to me, shiny and mesmerizing. I remember it's the first game where I learned about the color Magenta. So that was the pinacle of my obsession, obtaining the magenta keycard. Jup.

... not very encouraging, considering NSO track record.

Anyway, I never played this game. Very interested to try it for the first time.

The new Japan app got mentioned but I’d imagined Rare games have been nailed down forever, they’re just spreading them out cause when proper first party ends they’ll want them to balance out whatever third party comes in.

Still think we’ll get a new roadmap

Conker has a shot...
I’m not sure this really means anything for Conker’s Bad Fur Day, since this 18+ N64 app is only for Japan, and Conker didn’t get a Japanese release. Of course, they could always bring the 18+ N64 app outside of Japan…but then what games would it have besides Conker?? Surely they wouldn’t launch it with just one game, especially since it seems they held off on releasing GoldenEye 007 in Japan until they could launch it with another game (Jet Force Jemini).

I wanted this so long, but some of the reactions here make me feel I should keep this game a fond memory instead of the controller horror it feels right now lmao!

Perfect Dark?

The N18+ app has opened every game up to come out now. All the little N64 kiddies can use the regular app. Us grown ups will be hanging out on the N18+

Hope Conker is a separate download altogether if it comes out, I don't want that installed on my Switch.

Will try Jet Force Gemini tho

From my past experience with the game both on hardware and emulation, the NSO trailer doesn't seem to have any of the immediately notable visual errors that are associated with emulating JFG, at least so far. The Pistol and Tri-Rocket reticle displays the frame buffer reliant assets of their crosshairs properly, and the game is rendering the rain properly in Tawfret. That doesn't mean all visual hiccups are guaranteed to be fixed but it's already avoided some of the common missteps.

Ultimately if they want Conker, Perfect Dark, or any other game that might get rerated to M in 2023 and license them they'll drop an 18+ app in the US/PAL/etc.

18+ branding can also be future proofing for when the successor likely adds GC, Wii, DS, etc NSO where there are more M rated games they could license. Nintendo could get all the old Call of Duty games that released on GC and Wii as an example.

If they launched it with only two games in Japan, I doubt only having one or two games in other regions is going to be an obstacle.

I rented this quite a few times back in the day and always had a good time with it. Will check it out again to have my nostalgia ruined (usually the case with these N64 games aside from a select few, lol!)

I said I doubt they’d launch it here with just one game, not “one or two” games. Sure, if there was another game that would be rated M that they could launch it with, and if there were a handful more they could add later, then I can see it happening. But it would be bizarre to release it with just Conker, effectively making it the Conker’s Bad Fur Day app and nothing more, lol.

I really don't see the problem with there only being one game, especially at launch. The marginal maintenance cost of adding these is likely quite low.
