It will always be funny to me that the most notable thing this character was in was a crossover episode with the Simpsons to promote the show, which everyone working on the episode hated the idea of, yet in spite of the character, is still one of the more quotable and funny episodes in the series.

come on, nobody needs to pledge against this guy
Right?!?! That's what I'm saying!

You bad-mouthed MacGuyver, didn't you?

Technically I’ve already been taking the pledge for over a decade now anyway, but sure, I’ll Take the Pledge

As a kid I watched that episode for years having no idea it was a crossover. I just assumed he was some random Simpsons character that showed up once.

The Critic was fun on its own. Granted you mostly watched for the dumb spoofs. The Jurassic Park one is forever burned into my cortex.

Man I haven't watched him in like ten years.
Same.

I take The Pledge!

It’ll be easier than that No Wham one next month right?

did you know linkara's theme song has a second verse?

I still don't totally get what the joke is and I'm no longer afraid to ask. Are there people out there watching a lot of his videos? Is he making new videos? Is the joke that he isn't and so it's easy? I mean, I haven't broken my pledge, so I think I deserve some answers for my service.

As far as I'm aware, Doug still produces new Nostalgia Critic videos every single week. Which is ironic when you consider the entire return was supposed to be every other week since burn-out and wanting to do something else was the entire reason he stopped originally. Also, Doug and Channel Awesome have proven to be absolute garbage, so No Nostalgia Critic November should just be changed to No Nostalgia Critic Ever.

Nostalgia Critic is an American review comedy web series created, directed by, and starring comedian Doug Walker. The series initially launched on YouTube on July 3, 2007, before moving to Walker's own site, That Guy with the Glasses, then to Channel Awesome. The show follows Walker as the title character, a bitter and sarcastic critic who mostly reviews films and television shows from his childhood and recent past, usually with comically exaggerated hysteria. The show often alternates the Critic's angry rants and humor with analysis of the episode's subject. Some of the films he reviewed (such as Exorcist II: The Heretic, The Garbage Pail Kids Movie, Batman & Robin, and Foodfight!) are generally considered as the worst films ever made.

On September 14, 2012, Walker announced the retirement of Nostalgia Critic and that it would no longer be a weekly production, as he and his brother felt that they had gone as far as they could with the series. Walker then focused his efforts on another web series called Demo Reel, but on January 22, 2013, Walker released a sketch short film titled "The Review Must Go On", announcing the return of the Nostalgia Critic; Malcolm Ray and Rachel Tietz of Demo Reel joined the series as side characters. On December 30, 2015, Nostalgia Critic aired its 300th episode, a review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. On October 10, 2018, Nostalgia Critic aired its 400th episode, a countdown of the top 11 Stephen King movies. On October 14, 2020, it aired its 500th episode, a review of The Stand. On November 9, 2022, the series aired its 600th episode, a review of Anastasia.

Thanks Wikipedia. That doesn't really answer my question at all. Is he still, like, relevant?

Halftime report. To our 41 brave members who have chosen to take the pledge: how are you holding up? Have you upheld your end of the bargain, or have you finally cracked from the pressure...?
It's exceedingly hard, but I'm fighting every day to make everyone here proud

I'm happy to report that I'm still going strong. Discipline and integrity are everything.

I used to watch Nostalgia Critic when I was a teenager, back in 2008-9. I'd get legitimately excited upon seeing he'd posted a new movie review. I was a certified acolyte. A Doug Walker altar boy. I had a habit of refreshing his page on That Guy With The Glasses on a near daily basis, jonesing for my fix of the angry internet man screaming about old movies (only a few of which I'd actually even watched).

That's mighty grim, I know.

But I'm a changed man. I haven't sought out, let alone watched Nostalgia Critic content in over a decade. The reason I'm so open about my journey, about the progress I've made, is because I want to show others that abstinence is possible. Sobriety is possible. If this post can inspire even one other pledgebuddy to stay strong and carry on, then I'll have done my good deed for the day.

I'm holding strong. After all... next month is Doug Walker December

I won't lie, this month has been exceptionally challenging for myself.

In order to take my mind off of the struggle of The Pledge, I decided I would delve into the backlog of video games a bit. I figured, hey, the new Spider-Man game came out recently, maybe I'll finally start playing the first one? So I down loaded it onto my PC through Valve's "Steam" service (it's a launcher for PC video games in case you did not know) and started playing it, controller gripped within sweaty palm and quivering finger.

I made it through the game's intro. It was great, I had a pretty solid time with it. I tend to play video games by taking my sweet time and appreciating environments and details, so rather than swing around New York City like a Spidey-Man ought to, I decided to take to the streets and check out the sights from the ground level. However, after only a few moments, I noticed something.

So many of these dudes kinda remind me of... Him...

These dudes are everywhere. They wear this outfit. They don't even look that much like him, but they remind me of him nonetheless. You can walk through Times Square and see like 10 bald white dudes wearing this fit. All it does is make this accursed month that much more foul. I am thankful to have a place to retreat to during this turbulent month. Thanks Fami.

Man of White,
Weapon ablaze,
Greet me once again tonight,
To help me through November haze.

We don’t need no emulation

We don’t need no need no game control

No dark sarcasm in the game room

Critic leave those games alone

HEY! CRITIC! LEAVE THOSE GAMES ALONE!

His early videos are still funny

It’s when he decided he was some sort of auteur and decided to do over the top improv sessions instead of just simple reviews that he went downhill

Probably my favorite vid he ever did was the one time he reviewed a video game, Bebe's Kids (SNES). Good memories, but alas, I refuse to go back and watch it again, as I'd be breaking The Pledge, and The Pledge is not to be trifled with.

I almost stumbled right at the starting line, since I was just about to start NaNoCriMo when I saw this thread. But I took the pledge, and I have been holding strong since!

Is there a reason for this? Did they do something bad?

Like, it seems to me that we’d just be lowering the view count of an above average YT person for no reason at all.
People should learn about Change the Channel.

Did they do something bad? I dunno lets count the ways

- They covered for another producer who was grooming underage fans for over a year before firing them.

- They didn't pay their employees to work long hours on their vanity movie projects.

- They were difficult to get ahold of when people had issues with the site or other problems, but would fire people within 15 minutes if they "ignored a skype message".

- They forced people to sign waivers saying they weren't liable for any injuries AFTER the person was injured before they'd call for help.

- They likely committed fraud using a crowd funding site to make a gameshow, only put it out after people complained there had been no updates for months, and never even delivered the full amount of episodes funded.

- They used an actual woman's method of suicide to give one of their fiction characters sympathy.

- They fired someone on medical leave and forced them to sign a 3 year non competes to keep her benefits.

There's more and some of the details above might be a bit off, it's been awhile since I read/watched a summary of the 70+ page change the channel document where the former producers told all about Channel Awesome and Doug (aka the NC's) years of abused and shitty management. Considering CA's response was "we're sorry you felt that way", I'm inclined to believe the former producers.

Even ignoring all of that, if Doug hasn't put out anything quality in almost a decade. Between the horrible 3.5 hour abomination that was To Boldly Flee (that was filmed in a week btw), the awful Demo Reel a show so bad it caused people to live the site making other producers lose money, and modern NC which is just Demo Reel starring the NC.

Pssshh I’ve got this in the bag!

It’s a new bag from uniqlo so there is no nostalgia involved anywhere along the chain

I was not aware of any of this. I will not be watching any of his videos henceforth.

It's interesting that my post was weeks ago and somehow I woke up to four notifications about people responding to it today. I hope I didn't upset anyone with my question.

Nothing wrong with wanting to find out more information.
