News The Game Awards 2023 | Nomination Thread | Announcement at 9a PT / Noon ET / 5p GMT

This is probably the best GOTY noms I could have hoped for. Pretty much every game looks great or is something I really enjoyed playing. It aligns with my taste well personally. Starfield not wasting a slot is great. Only one that I might not have in there is Spider-Man 2.

I already have an unhealthy amount of pettiness towards FF16 in my heart, but now that I see it getting nominated for best soundtrack over Octopath 2, it's only going to get worse!

Nintendo's 2023 aptly summarized in one image.

Very pleasantly surprised that Engage and Pizza Tower got nominations. Wish the latter got nominated for best music too, but the snub is at least counterbalanced by TOTK getting that nod; the music in that game is quite underrated imo.

While I still believe TOTK is the conventional favorite for GOTY overall, I think it's safe to say both BG3 and TOTK will be taking home a good share of awards next month regardless of who takes home #1.

So Alan Wake 2 turned out pretty good? Never played the first game, but it’s interesting it ended up getting the nomination (and potentially booting Starfield) after gloom around it being sandwiched between many other major releases. Hope this leads to nice sales for Remedy.

This is the second time that Nintendo releases a Zelda and a Mario and have to endure the agony of competing with themselves for game of the year.

If I had to choose, Wonder would win. But BG3 is right there.
mostly a joke but there are no "obvious wins" at the game awards since GOW beat Red Dead 2 and last year when GOW:R sweep the awards only to loses to Elden ring at the end for GOTY, honestly the only year when it's predictable is when a new last of us comes out since critics eat that shit up like a kid eating candy on Halloween

Dave the Diver in the indie category... at that point you might as well have nominated Baldur's Gate 3 as well - it's more indie than Dave.

I'm playing it so far and it's a triump for creativity but a bit ??? in gameplay, as per usual with Remedy honestly.
Still would really recommend it, it's one of those "I love the game even through it's flaws" kinda affairs

Really happy RE4 made it. It has some of the best music in the RE series so it's gonna be great to hear it in the medley.
Me too. I was getting worried for a minute there 😭

The Keighleys website won't load for me, so I can't check all the categories. It was always going to be the case that some excellent games missed out but I think it's mostly a shame that no indie game got a GOTY nod this year; there's no shortage of quality and variety but awards season often is dominated by big budget mainstream titles.

I'm yet to pick up Alan Wake 2 or Baldur's Gate 3 (because I'm Series S so one is a little too pricey and the other not available yet), but I'm hoping to catch up on them in the next few months. Not surprised to see Tears nominated, obviously, and I'm glad Wonder is getting the recognition too; in very different ways, they show EPD at the top of their game and along with Pikmin 4 they're a real showcase swansong for Switch.

Cameron Monaghan nominated for Best Performance, let's gooo. It's probably going to Neil Newbon for Astarion though, he went insane. Honestly would have loved to see Devora Wilde for Lae'zel, but the entire BG3 cast went hard as hell.

Oh they snuck in Yuri Lowenthal's Peter Parker too, he has a decent shot as well.

anyway called 5 out of the 6 nominations and honestly super happy alan wake took the spot over starfield

Lmao per the wikipedia page

Dave the Diver is the first game from Mintrocket, a subsidiary of Nexon.[7] Despite the game's indie look, Mintrocket has stated that they are not an indie developer.

They really pulled a fast one over on the industry with that one, I see people endlessly calling it an Indie

Baldur's Gate 3 for Best Multiplayer is an interesting consideration. It's a huge feat and it's a blast, but my wife and I have had a lot of bugs on PS5. Still, it's doing something most games don't attempt.

The definition of "indie" is pretty grey these days so I think it's understandable for Dave the Diver to be included. Geoff says he basically leaves it up to whatever the voters choose.

Pikmin 4 has a really strong chance of winning Best Strategy. Its biggest competition will be Cities Skyline 2 and that game had a lot of issues that soured people.

Hopefully this year will finally put the “token indie” thing to rest. Indies have been nominated in the past because they were one of the 6 best games of the year, not because there’s an imaginary slot that needs to be filled.

Chained Echoes - Releasing a game in December is not help for these kind of things.

Indie game
Indie debut

It really should have been a slamdunk for both those categories.

I also feel for Octopath 2, incredible RPG and soundtrack

Pokemon SLEEP was ROBBED.

I'm surprised Starfield only got one nomination in total. I know it's popular to dunk on right now, but it is one of my favorite games I played this year.

Also Pikmin 4 in Family of course lol. I guess it's a good way to teach your children about death.

Also forgot Fire Emblem Engage was this year, jesus.

Chants of Sennaar got a nomination! I can't see it winning the category (Games for Impact)but great to see a nom, same goes for Terra Nil and A Space for the Unbound.

Mario Wonder for best Art... that's going to sting for some lol (well deserved)

EDIT: lol and best multiplayer, more controversey!

Unpopular opinion for "muh realism sucks" bros: Alan Wake 2 should probably win best art direction. Wonder is a close second though!

Lies of P and Tears probably shouldn't be there

I have to say it, RIP Final fantasy 16, it really feels like while the game is good everything around it kind of got against it. At least it will win best score as a consolation prize.

Most Anticipated Game is a wildly unexciting list after this year, lol.

Either an odd selection or just reality.
Prime 4 hasn’t made that list in years, technically it should be eligible as it’s officially announced. I think everyone just has no hope right now 😭

Super Mario Bros Wonder as best art direction/game and GOTY was very suprising, i trough only Tears of the Kingdom would be nominated for something at TGA

I am going to go against conventional wisdom and say Nintendo might actually have a major thing to show off this year, 2 of their games are nominated for GOTY, and is the publisher with the most nominations, even more likely if TOTK manages to win GOTY

Still sticking with Baldur's Gate as the winner, but Alan Wake winning the critic vote at the Golden Joysticks has me thinking it could win instead. Honestly Mario too, if only because I'm a little surprised it was nominated at all (This isn't me implying Mario is bad mind you).
