Discussion What will be the next Pokémon game?

Just posting this here ;) Also Arachaludons bridge form looks a lot like Driftveil Drawbridge in Unova specifically...Yeah at this point i would be shocked if we didn't get a new Unova game between the Scarlet/Violet DLC and the mainline gen 10 game. Not sure if it will be in 2024, 2025 or even 2026. Also not sure if its going to be on the Switch or Nintendo's next system. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

I think similar to 2021,

Black and White Remakes and Legends Unova

They’ve said a big reason they make remakes in the first place is so that new players have a chance to go back and see these regions, so I don’t think they’ll do a Legends game on their own without any context from Black/White being available in some form, and remakes still have a market.

The big question is how they’ll handle Black/White 2. I don’t think a full blown sequel will be ignored, so maybe they put that out in the following year.
It would be perfect to have BW2 take up 2025’s slot and then have Gen 10 come out in 2026 for the 30th anniversary (giving it an extra year of dev time too)

If a Legends based in Unova is next, please God let it have an enhanced version for the next console.

“why’s everyone talking about gen five? isn’t it all a bit too soon?

oh, this tweet? yeah the thing looks like a bridge but i don’t see how…

oh…

ohhhhhhhhhhh”

I was all prepared to be extra skeptical here but damn, that’s pretty spot-on

i’ll still believe it when I see it but I’m definitely intrigued

edit: wait a minute, where is that image on the right from?

How is it too soon? Before we end up with Gen X in 2025/6, they're likely to give us a remake of some kind, and Gen II or Gen V are the obvious choices since Gen VII gave us a second Kanto remake with Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee (meaning Johto could be next) and Gen VIII gave us BDSP and PLA (meaning Unova could be next).

Sorry for the late response, but the image on the right is from Archaludons page on the official Scarlet and Violet website. Here's the link: https://scarletviolet.pokemon.com/en-us/pokemon/archaludon/

The picture depicts Archaludon using its new signature move: Electro Shot!

got it, thank you!!

I absolutely misunderstood and thought it was one of the Gen 5 bridges from the anime with how it’s cropped, haha

but still — there’s intrigue here regardless

It does bear a striking resemblance to Skyarrow bridge...

Lets not forget that the trainer using Archaludon is supposedly related to Unova's Drayden!

I still cant decide wether the next game will be a revisit of Johto or Unova. They've been dropping hints towards both regions. Lots of Johto and Unova Pokemon have been getting the spotlight in Legends Arceus and Scaret and Violet in the form of new forms/evolutions.

Kitakami seems to take a lot of inspiration from Johto with its Japanese theming and having lots of Johto mons. Meanwhile, Blueberry Academy is literally in Unova (doesnt count as a full Unova revisit smh) and seems to have its fair share of Unova mons and has more Unova references, like Drayton being Draydens grandson.

Of course, Pokemon is no stranger to teasing their next game in their projects...But why would they tease TWO regions? Are both regions coming soon? Are they not teases at all but simply references to cater to older fans? I've got no clue!

Speaking of Kitakami, besides having lots of Johto theming it also seems to take some inspiration from Legends Arceus and Hisui, suggesting that it's somewhere between Johto and Sinnoh (possibly just North of the Sinjoh Ruins?). Because of the amount of Legends Arceus inspiration, is it possible that the team that developed Legends Arceus is working on the SV DLC instead of a new Legends game?

Regardless, Johto and Unova are two of my favorite regions (after Sinnoh, funny how that works out) so i'd be eating good if its either of those two. Leaning towards Unova though hehe.

I also know the Riddler Khu has been hinting at a Unova revisit, but...Leakers can be wrong too! Remember Pokemon Stars? Yeah. I'm not convinced until i see it despite Khu's admittedly pretty spotless track record.

I just want the next game to still be playable on the OG Switch honestly, that's my biggest wish

My guess, Johto will get the legends treatment. Unova game will be BW3

BW3 would be interesting, but I can only see it happening if they remake BW1/2 first.

They've said pleanty of times that one of the biggest reasons they do remakes is so that newer fans and kids getting into the series have the chance to experience older regions, so I dont know if they'll put out a "3" when most of the target audience were barley even born when 1 and 2 came out. (Man, that makes me feel oldddd), not to mention are totally inaccessible on modern hardware

They made sure Legends was timed so it would coenceide with BDSP, so newer fans would have full context of what Sinnoh is going in, I believe we'll get the same case for any Unova project coming up (Be it BW3, or Legends or whatever), especially with Unova being more story and character focused than any game before.

3 Unova projects in a year would be way too much, so I think the most likley scenario would be we get BW1 in the Summer, and the new thing (BW3 or Legends) in the Fall in 2024...... and then in Summer 2025 we get BW2. (Or maybe BW2 is reworked into DLC for the BW1 remake, but I find that less likley).

Why would BW3 come out before BW2? I don't think that ordering makes much sense.

The new game will probably take the Fall slot, so unless we get both BW1 and 2 at the same time (or 2 is dlc), I’m not sure where else would be the perfect time to slot in BW2 and not overload the schedule with 3 games all at the same time.

It would be awkward if it was numbered, like BW3, but if it was something like Legends, I think BW1 (Summer) > Legends (Fall) > BW2 (Summer) would be a fine order.

Legends could always come out in January again, so we could get Fall > Winter >Summer too

I suppose that could happen, but i think its more likely if they combine BW and BW2 into one game, before BW3/Legends

It's a curious scenario. I think it would be better if they were serpate games, but combining them could work.

You could beat the BW1 story, then a sign of "2 years later" pops up and you meet Cheren in Aspertia City, and then just go through a modified version of the BW2 story, going through the new locations (Which should be significantly streaminlined since you wont fight half the gyms again). There could even be a clothes/hair shop in Aspertia City that gives you the BW2 outfits and designs.

If done right, combining the best parts of BW1 with BW2 into one mega game could be amazing, but only if it's done very right

Yeah imo expecting both BW and B2W2 to be remade is wishful thinking. I expect some new postgame episode adapting the sequel's content, ala episode delta

It feels way too soon for BW to be remade though. But Khu is hinting at something Unova related, so who knows what form that takes

There is a looot GameFreak can do before Gen10:
• Let’s Go Johto
• Legends Johto
• Black/White remakes
• Legends Unova
• Legends Paldea (either one game that traverses between past and future, or standalone titles that take place in the past and in the future)
• Explorers of the Sky remake
• New original PMD game

And to the poster that said they might remake B2/W2: they won’t.

Gen 5 is my favourite gen of all time, and that's why I don't want them to revisit it with a remake, or, worse yet, Black/White 3.

I am not happy with Pokemon's modern development cycle. The games are coming out way too quickly and lack any sort of polish. This annual release cycle was fine back in the day when Game Freak made top-down, sprite-based Pokemon games that presumably took a lot less development time and effort to fully bring to completion... but now, in a world where they're trying to release massive AAA open-world games, this dev cycle just doesn't work anymore.

If we get a BW remake from either GF or ILCA, I have no doubt it would be a huge disappointment to my favourite generation. I saw the Gen 4 fanbase during the abysmal BDSP, and I certainly don't want that happening to my favourite gen. A sequel would be even worse because it'd actually attempt to build on the world and its story, and honestly when I see Pokemon's current output... I'd rather they leave that saga alone. Just don't touch it. I don't trust them.

I'd be happy with a Legends Kyurem since it's a different take on Unova presumably during a different time with a totally distinct gameplay style, but I really don't want them to risk tarnishing BW/B2W2's legacy with a remake or direct sequel. Maybe that's hypocritical, but I also had a great time with PLA so that would probably be the best option.

I'm honestly kind of upset that the Indigo Disk is set within Unova... it's going to hurt to see my favourite region depicted in such an unfinished, rushed manner even if it is a totally unfamiliar location.

New stuff doesn't suddenly invalidate the old. If you don't like Game Freak's modern output then just avoid the entries you don't think you'd enjoy. I didn't buy Let's Go or BDSP, and if this is the direction that remakes take from now on, then personally I'm ready to write them off completely. The originals are still there for you to play and appreciate. To be honest it seems a bit unhealthy to obsess over the "legacy" of your favorite games to the point that DLC merely taking place in the same region upsets you.

This is true. I appreciate it. You’re right, there’s no need for me to play them. I guess as stupid as it might sound, I can’t imagine NOT buying the new Pokémon release, even if it’s hypocritical to my views. That’s on me.

On another note, just for clarification, “upset” may have been too strong a term lol. I didn’t mean to make it sound like it’s something that sits on my mind or anything like that. It’s just something I’m generally unhappy about when I do think of it. It’s not something I obsess over, just a case of mild frustration I guess.

Regardless, thanks for this insight. I think these conversations are valuable

Ideally, I'd want them to take their time, but we all know that's definitely not happening. I am expecting at least one more Switch 1 main series game, to be released in 2024. And then I'm expecting Gen 10 in Holiday 2025 for Switch 2.

Assuming that they will continue to use ILCA going forward and considering hints for Johto AND Unova (which are realistically the next two in line for remakes), do you guys think they will do Johto remakes by ILCA in 2024 for Switch 1 and then Legends: Kyurem for Switch 2 either also in 2024 or early 2025 (and then Gen 10 for Switch 2 in 2025)? After that, you'd have the 30th anniversary in 2026 (which is when I personally believe they will start releasing older main series games on the Switch & Switch 2 eShops).

There’s nothing Johto nor ILCA coming anytime soon.

I believe we will get GF experimental game next year and then Gen 10 in 2024.

2024? You mean 2025?

But still, I think Gen 10 is going to be in 2026, the timing for the 30th-year anniversary with Gen 10 of Pokemon is just so perfect to give it away with some DLC (if Gen 10 released in 2025 like you and others believed).

Whoops, yeah I meant 2025.

Game Freak has never delayed a gen because an anniversary and this time won’t be the exception.

I'm ready to witness the shitstorm of those who are hyped by the rumors of a Unova game when they announce Legends Celebi and/or Gen 2 remake 😅

I’m big unova fan too but imho jotho is next.

Yeah. They never delayed a gen because of an anniversary.
But the last 2 big anniversaries: the 10th-year and 20th-year both got a new gen D/P and S/M.

So they might not delay a gen but they could have aimed for it since the beginning.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Gen 10 to release in 2025? You would have it release the holiday before the anniversary and then when the anniversary hits, they could announce DLC and hopefully older main series games on eShop. Can't imagine this is going to be the time when they finally go back to a 4 year schedule, otherwise they would've released Arceus in holiday 2022 and SV in holiday 2023. If a successor releases next year, I can't see them waiting two full years for a new gen on the new hardware (I know that is usually the case though, even with Switch, but I feel like things are different now).

Doesn’t Sun and Moon disprove this? IIRC nothing released in 2015
There's no evidence I remember that Sun & Moon were intended for 2015. All gens but 3 & 4 have been 3 years long. It'd be very weird for Gen 6 to have only been two years long. A Z cancellation is more likely to explain the lack of a 2015 release than a SM delay but it also could have been that nothing was planned for 2015.

There's actually a lot of evidence to suggest that there was going to be another Kalos game, but that it likely got cancelled because of too many things going on (SM, LGPE, possibly SWSH stuff).

Scarlet and Violet are precisely why they might go back to 4 years. Their dev pipeline demonstrably cannot handle 3 years anymore (at least as things currently are) and it's highly probable they had to pull staff off of their next experimental game in order to fix it. Even the SV DLC is giving off some big internally delayed vibes.

The problem with Pokémon scheduling is inflexibility. By the time they would have realized SV needed more time in the oven, it would have been too late.

There was a cancelled Zygarde game that was supposed to release in 2015. Sun and Moon probably didn't move.

There’s no evidence of that. The closest thing is the reserved game ID for X_2 and Y_2 in the source code leak, but that could have never progressed past the “reserve this just in case” phase.

The entire ecosystem of Pokémon side media did a bunch of "Z" content right when the game would have released, and all the relevant content was present in XY from day one, including some stuff that has never been released to this day. There is no reasonable explanation except a cancelled game.

I agree that they can't handle 3 year dev cycles anymore, but the problem is that SV has incredible sales. All of their Switch titles have incredible sales, so it's hard to imagine them slowing down based on that. Outsourcing and expanding GF seems more likely.

Legends kyruem would be amazing, but I have a bad feeling we’re getting Unova remakes, followed immediately after by Gen 10. It would be equivalent to the Gen 9 Release schedule. We got Galar DLC (2019) BDSP (2021) Legends arceus (2022) Gen 9 (2022)

I hope Gen 5 remakes releases on Switch 2 and its actually a good remake. Legend would be cool too 😀

I wonder when they will anounce their 2024 holiday game, Pokemon Day? Switch 2 Presentation? 🤔

Miltank getting a regional form it should have gotten in Paldea confirmed!

have people found the next region hint in SV yet? or what might be the hint?

here was SV's hint in Sword and Shield

b1VngZP.jpeg
It's probably there, but so subtle that no one will recognize it until the games get announced, just like the SWSH example
Till then, it'll sit there in plain sight, taunting all who seek it right our their noses
