News Red Dead Redemption 2 has been rated for the Nintendo Switch In Brazil

I don't have an opinion on this really other than: how

It would be very strange to rush a Switch port of RD2R this late in the system's life when the successor is right around the corner
and attract negative publicity when it inevitably looks a lot worse than existing versions. kinda a big deal for a game where atmosphere & detailed visuals are one of the main hooks.

Brazil rating only gives me pause (sorry to the Brazilians here lol)

They rated WOW for Xbox and then Blizzard denied it outright
I don't see a rating board rating something out of nowhere. maybe they sent the game for rating and then had second thoughts, changed plans, etc...

Switch 1 stares intently at Switch 2, hand by it's holster, before exclaiming "this town ain't big enough for the two of us"

‼️ bang ‼️

Switch 2 delayed to 2026

I understand that Brazilian rating boards require smaller evidence of the game, compared to other boards. Astroneer, rated in 2018, came out last year, 4 years after the rating.

Two big misses of the board, WoW Xbox and Unravel 1 for Switch probably got rated in the concept phase but got canned afterwards. The other leaks came true, but months after their leak.

We don't know when RDR 2 was rated or even if it's still coming. We could be closer to it's release or it might not release at all.

Ok now this has to be either cloud or a temporary rating until the Succ releases because what the fuck.
Beyond the fact that there's no rating for Cloud versions of games on Switch, there wouldn't be a Brazilian rating for such thing, because they don't offer the Cloud games on our eShop.

I'm saying it would be "rushed" to be launched at Switch 1 in its last year. At this point it should be optimized for Switch 2, I would think.

It's not a mutually exclusive situation here, it can be both?

Developers and publishers arent suddenly gonna stop releasing games for Switch 1 once NG Switch is about to come out.
If this indeed is happening, it's definitely not a rushed port and has been in development for quite a few years. Because it would be a massive task to get this running.

This port has been in dev for more than 5 years. At this point this is NOT a port and devs build a completely separate game just for Switch. For the reason I stated above, Nintendo could have paid for this.
This isn't really a thing anymore, this stopped for home consoles around the PS1 and PS2 era and stopped for portable consoles after the 3DS. It would be quite funny though if they released a so-called "Red Dead Redemption 2" that was just a reskin of the first game with a different world and assets and features ported over from the second game ala Quake 2 on Nintendo 64.

I wish devs had the balls to do this

I think what they’re describing is something similar to what happened with DQXIS, which is basically a remake of DQXI.

Ah I see. Well honestly? We've hard this rumored years ago so the idea has been out here for at least 4 years....so I don't really think it would have been rushed.

Plus the current Switch is here and has 130+ mil owners everywhere, so while the port does sound more attractive on the newer hardware they were very, very likely working on this for years now.

They had to completely rebuild Dragon Quest XI on a different Version of the Unreal Engine to be able to port it to Switch.

Posts and "jokes" like these are wildly inappropriate, even behind spoiler tags. For this and for a prior instance, you have received a 1-month ban - Irene, xghost777, Barely Able
wait a minute, RDR2 would be Switch first ever 100 gigabyte game or am I missing some "huge" releases?
btw, I would love to play RDR2 again on Switch, just to feel the energy there.

What dafuq ....

This is now one of my favorite fami quotes of all time.

This is a really curious one. A Switch 1 port will certainly be the worst looking version of the game, but a well optimised Switch 2 version could hypothetically end up as the best looking console version, considering they never updated the game for PS5 or XBSX. From the rating it seems like we're getting the first one, and I wouldn't hold out hope for a Switch 2 patch, given they didn't do so for the other consoles, but it's still interesting to consider.

Also, count me as cautiously optimistic about the Switch port. RDR2 is a technically impressive game, but a lot of what makes it look so good is the excellent art direction that's consistently applied throughout the game. A Switch port would certainly have to run at lower resolutions, with reduced quality assets and reduced or removed graphical effects, but if they can avoid changes that significantly impact the aesthetic of the game (like the lighting system, or the weather and mist/fog effects), then you could end up with something that still looks like RDR2, although obviously significantly scaled back in quality.

They're not rushing the port tho, Totillo has heard it's been in the works since 2019. Switch 2 can just get a straight port of the PS4 version, so the heavy porting work is for Switch 1.
The Witcher III took a while and there's a gams Saber(I think?) is porting that is taking like 3 years to come.

Anyways I'm happy more impossible ports are coming. With the amount of time that one took, I definitely expect it to run and look great and them pairing back the right things.

Can't wait to see it!! Expect either a random announcement like next month(just like RDR got announced randomly in August for a release later that month) or a February Direct announcement.

I'm not sure of any port that took 3 years. The Witcher took around a year
The first leaks of Borderlands 3 and Gotham Knights are from 2020. BL3 appeared on Turn Me Up's and Gotham Knights appeared on WB Montreal's Linkedin pages. Some ports do take some crazy amount of time.

Morbidly curious to see it. The visuals are a very large part of what makes RDR2 good so compromising those too much when the Switch 2 is supposedly around the corner just seems like odd timing.

At the end of the day, if the gameplay can be preserved, that's really all that matters.

If the game has nothing but good graphics, then who the fuck cares anyway.

assuming this has been actively in the works since Stephen Totillo talked about it back in the day, it's gonna be a really impressive as I feel like Rockstar wouldn't want a botched release of their most recent major release in the same way CD Projekt wouldn't have released a complete shitshow for Witcher 3.

It will make the lack of a GTA V port even funnier tho as it would supposedly be a much easier port work if we're talking about the single player alone (which I'd honestly think would rake in a ton of money).

Can ratings be done a long time in advance for unreleased hardware ? (my guess would be no but you never know)

Thank god someone showed me this topic ^^'

Anyways, seeing Batman Arkham Knight getting on Switch makes me kind of wanting to believe this is gonna be on Switch 1. But yeah, there is a possibility it might be for the Successor aswell.

Thing is, when I joined these forums, there were some talks about RDR1 getting on Switch, and one mentioned to me about a tweet of Totilo saying RDR2 was in the works for Switch and/or Switch Pro.

The Brazilian ratings board could have seen that and posted on the ratingsboard? Note that this tweet is from 2021. And since Switch Pro isn't a thing anymore, possible being a thing on Switch 2.

Also, in 2019 the Switch Pro Controller was found in the files of RDR2

Than there was the 2018 interview with Reggie saying Nintendo wanted to have RDR2 on Switch. (but timing ruled it out by then)

Early August this year, someone from IGN asked Strauss Zelnick if they would be an early supporter of a new Nintendo system, in which Zelnick replied ''almost certainly''.

But yeah, I firmly believe RDR2 comes to a Nintendo platform, although I am not sure if it will be Switch 1. I'm more leaning on Switch 2, from what Zelnick said.

imagine them re-programming RDR2 with RDR1 Switch "engine&assets"
that would be a real remake, basically, but also the best solution to make it run properly on this hardware

(won't happen)

I don't think so, but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm probably searching wrong but I cannot find Switch one. Only PS4, XB1, PC?
You're not searching wrong. The Switch portion has been removed from the listing. What that means is anybody's guess. But:

1. If adding the Switch as a platform was a mistake, there was no reason to update the listing. Red Dead 2 is already available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

2. This isn't a case of copy-paste confusion with the Undead Nightmare listing, which isn't on Xbox One or PC.

Frequently, when these types of leaks occur, they tend to delete them as soon as possible so that they have the least impact. The same thing happened with the ratings of Borderlands 3 on Switch.

Oh, they updated the listing then!
Yup. Would they bother asking to have it removed if it was a mistake?

Not to sound like a conspiracist but it would seem like someone was more concerned with having it show up in the listing than leaving a mistake up (if it was a mistake).

Could it mean that it was in fact for the Switch 2?

Sounds strange to have this when Switch 2 is (likely) just around the corner? I mean even from a financial perpespective:
  • a watered down version of a game, that likely took much longer to port and needed a lot of new assets made from scratch, that'll be sold on a system with a +100m userbase
  • a 1:1 port, less time consuming and no need for new asset development, that'll be sold on a new system which is the new thing

which of those do you think is more likely to turn a profit? To be honest, I'm not even sure it would sell more copies on S1. A mobile version with crisp and as good or even better visuals... People will buy like cupcakes specially if an early release when there's not that much competition on the system yet.

Also, how legit are these "rating" leaks? I mean, does Nintendo go knocking on every country's/region's rating provider and say "Hey guys, we have these games coming, please don't tell anyone."? This always sounded so strange to me, it's a huge red flag there and the risk of leaks is just something I can't fathom Nintendo (or any other company for that matter) to be confortable with.

Publishers have to submit the games for the systems. So yes, this is always a risk of a clerical error or a publisher pushing a game back. Some games also just aren't searchable so I guess there's a way to prevent leaks if the publisher cares enough.

As for why do a port now? Well then you can sell the game to Switch owners and maybe even sell an upgrade patch for Drake. Regardless of which system, you play on it, you still get the game

Thanks for clarfying this for me. So, if I understand correctly what you said, then these ratings can be "hidden"? it's weird then that they're not all hidden.

Regarding the port, I think the wow factor is just much bigger if you show it as a full fledged portable experience on pair (or better) with PS4/X1 (kinda like how surprised people were with Skyrim when Switch was first unveiled), rather than dumb it down to be playable in Switch 1 and then say "Hey guys, remember that downgraded bad looking game we released a few months back? Well, if you want you can pay for a Switch 2 patch!". Not sure how they'd make more money, but I'm pretty sure they'd have better PR and brand awareness if they went the Switch 2 route. But that's just my view :)

When publishers send their games to be rated in the ratings, they usually do so by stipulating that starting on X day the rating becomes publicly available in the listings. Frequently, these dates tend to be prior to the confirmation of a game/port due to different causes.

A mistake unfortunally

Still hoping for a Switch 2 port

Could we please stop spreading misinformation? This person on twitter doesn't know what they're saying. RDR2 wasn't rated this week it can't be a mistake. It was some time ago and we can't say for sure when.

Unless this comes from an official source I wouldn't trust random twitter accounts.
Just saw the tweet on my timeline and thought was worth sharing.
But glad to know it could still be coming.
Loved the first on on Switch.

as of right now there are multiple possibilities :
  • listing went public too early and it's coming to Switch 1 (and 2 hopefully)
  • listing went public too early and it's coming to Switch 2 only
  • it was a mistake somehow and it's not coming at all to either as of right now or the near future (but maybe switch 2 eventually)
We'll just have to keep speculating until confirmed, the only other source we have is Stephen Totillo back in 2021 saying that Rockstar was working on a RDR2 port for Switch and a "pro model".

Yeah, this is what actually happened. They secretly rated the game for Switch 1 some time ago, but this week, accidentally revealed the rating that was supposed to be hidden. Brazilian boards did this thing before.
