News F-Zero 99 announced for Nintendo Switch (out now!)

Yeah, it’s kind of crappy that Thousand Year Door is literally one of my favorite games of all time, and yet part of me reacted to the announcement with “great, now some internet nerds are going to think they bullied Nintendo into making a ‘real’ Paper Mario.”

If you complain and moan for 20 years, you too can bully a corporation into remaking a product you already own to sell to you. Never give up your #dreams.

This is surprisingly fun and well put together! Just the presentation alone has me thinking the developers really care about F-Zero and it's future. For what is offered it feels surprisingly full.

Now I'm imagining a sequel to GX but with similar crazy online battle modes implemented. I thought I knew exactly what I wanted with online F-Zero and this was not it. I am absolutely loving this!

maybe the best “bumper cars” videogame adaptation of all time? only other one I can think of is RCT3 but lmk if there’s a better one out there lol

I recommend reading the list of tips in the options menu! there’s some lil intricacies I wouldn’t have known otherwise that I’ve found useful

seriously fun game. loving the rotating side modes. closest I’ve come to winning in a regular 99 so far is 4th, a victory is maybe someday within reach

Played a little of it, and I very much enjoyed it for what it is. With the adjusted expectations I am very happy with what we got, and it's far far better than nothing. It's also super awesome to see so much positivity come in after most of us expected disappointment. Perhaps this can get very popular and revive the series for good? Or at least long enough for one more mainline game? X)

Actually I wanted to finish up Totk yesterday cause I had a lot of free time, but it turned into me just playing this with a few breaks inbetween until going to bed.

Have been trying the challenges to get some of the unique liveries for the vehicles, but crashed out on my 9/10th race without exploding.
Just surviving is an achievement in this sometimes.
Still haven't gotten to the finish a grand prix yet.

This is a whole lot of fun. I came third in my first ever race and have yet to match that peak lol. The game is chaotic and insane but you still need skill to do well, which is a potent mix. If they keep producing more content for it, such as new racers and tracks, I'll be sure to keep playing on and off

Without question, this is easily the worst of the 99 games. (Because it is the one that I am the worst at.)

Actually, it's a pretty good game. They were very smart to implement a "rivals" system, because dum dums like me who struggle to get out of the middle of the pack can feel good about getting a "hey, at least I beat my rivals" consolation prize. I like the rotating secondary mode too; just that little extra bit of variety is a good way to mix things up. The unlockable customization options and badges are also a nice incentive to keep you playing longer. This was a very well thought out release.

I am really loving this entire package. I hope they add more machines too. The more you play, the more clever the entire gameplay loop is form the rivals system, to the mechanics they explain as tips on the loading screen, the higher track to speed past the dozens racing bunched together on the main track, spin moves from X/GX for offensive and defensive maneuvers.

If they do a physical release of this I'm absolutely buying it.

"I'll just boost here, I can get away with it-"

Oh, forgot to say my best was 4th...but looking back at a recorded clip I made two mistakes which cost me catching up to 1st. Dang...

It's a shame they chose the SNES game as a reference for this. I totally get it as an homage to the first entry and what not, but the tracks are too tight for 99 players and the controls are probably the less refined in the series. I think F-Zero X would have been better for this same approach or even something more akin to Climax which is more polished in the gameplay department. I think even if it defeats the purpose of the "99" brand, the game would have been better with fewer racers.

However, credits to the menus and the overall vibe of the game. I love all the art and how it's presented. It gives F-Zero a character that was missing from GX which went for a more serious tone.

I was 1st in one race... just before the end screen results that put me in third. Lag issues I guess lol

This is good! Astral Boost, obstacle cars and the 99 concept in itself lend some nice extra depth to the proceedings, like they (same studio...?) did for Tetris.

Most of all I'm so glad Nintendo's poured resources into something new F-Zero. Now let's find a studio that'll do to F-Zero what Mercury Steam did for 2D Metroid!

Unfortunately, I've come here to say that F-Zero X does, in fact, still stutter on Switch. Don't think it'll get fixed anymore...

I changed my mind, this game is extremely funny

So many little cars constantly crashing into each other, I love it

Played a few rounds and a Grand Prix (made it to race 4!). It’s a lot of fun! I definitely need to get more comfortable with the controls as it is quite different from the GBA games I played last. I think I’ll be into this for a while.

I think I read somewhere this was done by NST using the Mario Odyssey engine.
If what I say is true, they should do the True F Zero successor

In time you will see. and by time I mean a week at best
Just to be clear : next week, you stop talking about it (because you're predicting nobody will play it anymore) or else, you'll have to do a 100% run of Bubsy 3D on a real hardware PAL 50 Hz Playstation with no cheats, no memory cards and no password to restart from your last game over.

Deal ?

Cool, no let us enjoy this "one week" game.

EDIT :
Bonus : you can change Bubsy 3D for Charlie's Angels on GameCube, but still without cheats and memory card. Good luck and if you feel like level 2 is going over and over and over, keep going.

Players not choose Death Wind as a track 5 times in a row challenge (IMPOSSIBLE).

Also random thought, but. The game is obviously actually 3D, right? Like, ramps and bombs and stuff are 3D polygon objects, and physics obviously work in a 3D space.

So they could absolutely add non-flat tracks if they wanted in the future, right. Because yes, they do have a large collection of flat tracks from all the SNES and GBA games, but wonder if they'd dip their toes onto adapting X and GX tracks too.

They should add BS FZero track and cars

Managed to play a bit of this and after initially being down on it using the SNES game as a base, I can say I'm really happy with the direction they took.
They incorporated the boost health bar and spin attack from X and GX so it plays a bit closer to those games than I initially thought it would which means I get that high risk/reward gameplay I loved from X and GX even if the courses are the flat SNES ones. It's basically just 99 player F-Zero and after nearly 20 years of waiting, I'm more than happy for this to be our comeback game

Finally got to try this morning, it's more or less what I expected. Fun, but 99 players is just too much for these SNES tracks. It's not a bad experience, but if you thought being in the middle of the pack in 12 player Mario Kart was bad, you often don't have room to move in F-Zero 99.

If you're re in the middle of a pack, go spinny. That's the best situation to be in to rack up sky boost points, honestly.

Played the game for like fifteen minutes last night and now the only thing my mind can think of is the Big Blue theme

The best thing about this game is that it's going to help Zoomers realize that the OG Fzero is by far the best in the series.

You know the way that star sparks and skyway work is simply brilliant.
I mean how do you make a comeback mechanic in a racing game? With a game with items like mario kart it's easy. The lower your position the better the items. Simple as that. But how do you make one for a game with no items?
And this is why F-Zero 99's system is ingenious. Basically the lower your position the more vehicles will be in front of you. And those vehicles will bump each other which will give you more star sparks. The higher your position the less vehicles=less star sparks.
Elegant, simple, but ridiculously clever.

Woke up with Port Town music playing in my head.

What a wonderful problem to have right now lol. Will get some races in before work.

Anyone else notice that when you get a game over, the sound clip they use sounds just like the sound clip used in the old generation one Transformers cartoon when the show cuts from the an AutoBots scene to a Decepticon scene??
Maybe it’s just me lol.

I was playing this until 3 am last night, next F-Zero needs to have a multiplayer mode like this. I'm shocked how good and addiciting this is, may actually be better than Tetris 99 and Mario 35.
