The only disappointing thing to me is Yoshi is easy mode. I love Yoshi. I still expect an unlockable character. I just don’t want Nintendo to spoil it like they did Rosalina.
Lol, not sure if it's gonna pass PS2, they have to sell like 30m for that (don't have numbers here), that's a lot.PS2 starting to sweat a little bit
They don't really feel equivalent to me. The badges seem to do just one thing - like offer just one ability. Character differences in the past have been more like alterations in movement parameters like traction, jump height, floatiness, etc. I guess I would've preferred having both.
1000. I don’t have the hype for a 2d platformer since dkc2. This game will be special.Where is everyone’s hype level at after the Direct? Lower? Same? Higher?
Mine is through the roof!
Vulture, whose headline reads "Mario is just Gimmicks Now"What outlet has the exception?
It’s a tall order, but PS2 continued to sell and get support well after the PS3 launched. If Nintendo follows a similar path, it has a very good chance.Lol, not sure if it's gonna pass PS2, they have to sell like 30m for that (don't have numbers here), that's a lot.

I think it's less about expectations and more about what's fun. By the same token, before today, if someone suggested bringing in badges from the RPGs for customization, we could've brushed it off as "well they've never had badges outside an RPG before so no" and yet they didDifferent characters haven’t had unique properties in (non-mobile) 2D Mario games since…Super Mario Bros 2. (USA), right? I think that that, the original Super Mario Bros. 2 (The Lost Levels), and Super Mario Run were the only main series 2D Mario games to give characters different abilities, with Nabbit and Peachette being the only real exceptions outside of that I believe. So what Wonder does with the characters is just the norm and I dunno why so many people seemed to expect anything else.
Also, I like how the section of characters is literally every single character that has ever been playable in a main series 2D Mario game. I feel like this cast is going to be the standard for 2D Mario from now on, and maybe we’ll see more added to the group as well!
Well, as others have noted, badges essentially bring back characters’ unique properties from past games anyway, but in a way that’s much more flexible and doesn’t make every character control differently by default. This way everyone can have the same controls and abilities by default, but they can also select whatever ability they want regardless of what other players select; no fighting over who gets to be a specific character if multiple people prefer that character’s exclusive ability as is the case with 3D World.I think it's less about expectations and more about what's fun. No one is talking about Peach’s dress when she gets the drill power up. That black dress looks great.

He will never be the same...
The new voice is doing a good job!
It is pretty mixed, he’s saying he doesn’t like the gimmicks they add to new Mario games and would like to see more core gameplay changes rather than additions. Referencing the wonder flowers and Mario odyssey Cap mechanics.Vulture, whose headline reads "Mario is just Gimmicks Now"
It's behind a paywall for me so I can't give it a full look, but it actually sounds a bit more mixed from that headline. The original headline I saw reads "A Fun Gimmick"

When I say this game could be New Super Mario Bros Switch and people lose their minds, they are forgetting I'm a big stan of the New series of games. The truth is the last New Super Mario game we got was NSMBU, which was not only a WiiU launch title, but likely the first true HD game Nintendo ever developed. Like no shit this game looks way better technically, it's a game made a decade later.
The perpetual hate train of the New subseries has had this mind warping effect on people.
Cappy added a ton to the core mechanics, so not sure what he's on aboutYeah if he feels like that and referencing Cappy means his opinion doesn’t matter to me.
never noticed how the base of the tree in the bottom picture looks like a scrotum.
Night and day difference.

The past 15 years (at least) of Mario titles has largely focused on introducing a flashy new mechanic that generates a lot of fan buzz but ultimately doesn’t add much to the core gameplay. Super Mario Odyssey lets you throw Mario’s hat at creatures to take over their bodies, but the most enticing moment from the trailer, showing Mario transforming into a realistic-looking T-Rex, was disappointing in practice.
“Mario is just gimmicks now”. How to say “I never played SMB3” without saying “I never played SMB3”.There is such variety in the transformations and what they allow Mario to do, I can't help but feel this is a reductive view. To say nothing of what Cappy adds to the movement options etc.
I think something can be said for Mario games being built with a focus on mechanics as opposed to a more holistic approach, but I dunno. Anything can be reduced to gimmickry if you want it to.

2D Mario joining 2D Zelda and Metroid on delivering some absolute eye candy. Feels like I'm looking at concept art.
Dread gets bashed so much for it’s art and it’s always been mindboggling to me. The sterile EMMI zones are boring, but it’s got stuff like the Ruins in Artaria as well as Ghavoran, Burenia and Hanubia that are just gorgeous.

So regarding worlds it looks like worlds themselves will have multiple themes
- World 1: Pipe-Rock Plateau (grassland, rocky-lands)
- World 2: Fluff-Puff Peaks (starts as a frozen mountain before ascending into pink clouds)
- World 3: Shining Falls (ancient ruins looking?)
- World 4 - Petal Islands (beach, caves)
- “desert with white sands”
- “uncanny forest”
- “magma”
And then the announcer said “and more!”
Smthn about the inclusion of a photo here made me chuckleAnyone else feel they should've made the elephant power up a peanut?
This one is actually an interview
'Super Mario Bros. Wonder' Is What Happens When Devs Have Time to Play
Because Nintendo’s upcoming Mario game had no deadline, its creators were able to experiment with new styles and move from the Mushroom Kingdom to the Flower Kingdom—with delightfully trippy results.www.wired.com
They get it. They absolutely get it. I want to explore and find secrets in Mario. I want to be surprised and see idea after idea. The development priorities are spot on in that regard. I'm so fucking pumped.Super Mario Bros. Wonder developers discuss Nintendo's push to reinvent its classic side-scrolling formula
It's been 11 years since the last proper Mario side-scroller, a fact that surprises Nintendo's veteran exec Takashi Tez…www.eurogamer.net
What a jump a series can make in a decade. So stylish and flashy while still being perfectly readable off of the brightly colored main cast and with its foreground/background differentiation.
GOD this game looks beautiful.
I actually think MK8 did represent a shift in art direction toward a slightly more "Pixar realistic" look for Mario Kart. Pre Booster Course Pass MK8 blows most of the 3D Mario Kart games since Double Dash completely out of the water. There's connective tissue, sure, but there is a shift.I don’t see how saying this looks like a NSMB game is any different than saying Mario Kart 8 looks like any of the MK games since Double Dash.
This is aided by the World Map now being freely explorable, a mini open-world of its own which you can roam around to uncover later levels or bonus-style stages to try instead. If you're stuck, you can take some time out with a Break Time course - a mini Mario level that feels like a brief snatch of a brilliant idea, allowed to exist as its own little gem rather than being spread out over a full course. One I played saw Mario hopping over musical notes on a keyboard to defeat enemies while unlocking a familiar tune.
Without the pic, the post would’ve felt like…Smthn about the inclusion of a photo here made me chuckle
this. Nabbit would’ve been perfectly fine as an easy mode character since he’s still pretty new. But Yoshi deserved more. It would’ve been great to have him as a „middle ground“ in difficulty, being like the other normal characters but with his flatter abilityThe only disappointing thing to me is Yoshi is easy mode. The gimmicks are the entire point of modern Mario games though. Right. Yoshi is already a little easier with the flutter and tongue. He has his own abilities and that would been a good middle ground from the other group and Nabbit.this. Can you please tell or show me where you found these two screenshots? I need to know.

I was thinking the same thing.I'm guessing the September Direct trailer will be focused on boss battles, because we saw nothing here lol
That’s kind of a whole separate game, technically, and don’t all the characters share Luigi’s physics in New Super Luigi U anyway?Luigi has different abilities in New Super Luigi U, if that counts.
I was kinda addressing your previous posts, but yeah I guess I kinda forgot to bring it around to the post I was quoting, lol. Anyway, my point (that I guess I failed to convey, oops, lol) wasn’t “it’s not been the standard so it shouldn’t be expected”, it was that there’s a good reason why they haven’t really brought back character-specific abilities in newer 2D Mario games with simultaneous multiplayer (because it results in issues like 3D World has that I mentioned in my last post), and that’s why I feel it should be seen as unlikely to return in those type of games.I mean that's not really relevant to my post your what I was addressing in your previous post
I don’t think he feels like the additions change the core gameplay. This is a quote from the article.the additions are literally the core gameplay changes though? does he mean a more varied move set?
I agree, I guess the way they do new Mario games isn’t for everyone. The gimmicks are the entire point of modern Mario games though. I don't want a more complex move system, it's purposely simple.
