News 15 minute Super Mario Bros Wonder Direct August 31st at 10 am EDT

I feel like this could mean Sept Direct is a Partner showcase/Mini (not in a doomy way, just in a we know they have some stuff coming and they dont need to show any of it til next year, RPG is a remake which can be Twitter dropped, and maybe theres a reason they want to discuss things early next year...)

So we've finally confirmation that super Mario wonder is not a big release. It's not even going to be featured in the next general direct. Dring was right all along

Awesome!!! Can’t wait to see more.

I’m surprised so many are assuming that this is where the Martinet video will be shown and that that’s included in the 15 minutes.

I think that it would be announced before if it was, and if it is, it’ll be an addition to the 15 mins. I find Nintendo to be pretty specific about these things, they wouldn’t say 15 min on SMBW and have a Martinet video that takes up 5 min.

I fell like the GameXplain of old could make a 50 minute video just on this picture.

Bold decision from Nintendo to give the most expressive 2D Mario in ages the most sterile promotional art possible. What even is that background

not impossible but I could see them still wanting to give more details for the beginning of 2024, perhaps even giving a name and release date for the Peach game.

By comparison in 2022 they had a Splatoon direct in August 10th and then a regular general September 13th. But with Splatoon they pretty much had to considering it was releasing September 9th.

Considering we're supposedly getting new substantial hardware in 2024 it might throw off things a little.

15 minutes seems like a lot for a 2D Mario game. Game-specific directs make sense for more niche or complicated games, but Mario isn't exactly something you normally need an in-depth explanation for.

I wonder if that means they're still sitting on something as significant as Odyssey's capture mechanic that'll completely reframe what we can expect this game to be.

yeah I really wonder what’s up with that transparency-checkerboard-looking background lol. it’s even on the box art but it really feels like something else should (and maybe will?) be there
thank you nintendo for filling me with Wonder

that's pretty typical of Nintendo marketing in recent years in which they like to at least to keep some surprising mechanics close to their chest until closer to the release date, they did similar with Kirby Forgotten Land mouthful mode and TOTK fuse and Ultrahand.

They already announced it ahead of time when they announced he was moving on. I don’t see why they would have to specify he’s going to be here in this direct. It can just be here.

I'm not necessarily expecting Peach early next year given how little they showed. I think, RPG is the only thing that may make a Mini more likely than a Partner Showcase, but I don't feel like they're in a rush to talk about anything too much that can't be done in a January or February direct.

  • Miyamoto confirms the creation of the MartinAIt Super Mario Voice Programme as his replacement
  • microtransactions for animal power ups confirmed
  • season pass confirmed; day 1 playable Pauline DLC available as a preorder bonus
  • performance and glitch fixing patch coming on day 95

Makes sense for 15 minutes really if you think about it

If Nintendo doesn't shadow drop Super Mario Galaxy 2 on Switch this Thursday, I'm flipping a table.

Awwwww yeah! Great news!

I’m soooo ready to be blown away by this game’s mad inventiveness.

I know it's a stylistic choice but the background of that image makes me think the renders were all pulled from non-matching jpgs lol

When the debut trailer for Odyssey dropped, they didn’t show the hook (capture) and withheld it for the next showing.

But with Wonder, they have already shown off the hook (wonder flower) so what we will see this time will likely be the hook’s hook.

Prediction time!
  • No Mario VA! It's all AI generated. But those flowers will be voiced by the CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.
  • New Donk City themed world with playable Pauline. She'll wear a tracksuit for better jump.
  • Pick your own color variations for Mario and friends! Black dresses for Peach & Daisy are available for anyone wants a little goth in their game
  • More returning enemies! Moai from Super Mario Land! Because gaming world really needs more Moai!
  • Wario and Waluigi as unlockable playable characters. You can unlock Waluigi but you can't actually play as him as he doesn't exist
  • DLC pack 1: Mario Family as playable characters! Papa Mario, Mama Mario, Uncle Tony, Uncle Arturo And Grandpa Mario. Secret! Luigeena from Super Mario Super Show!
Did you have a Wonder Flower before you wrote this?

SUPER MARIO BROS. WONDER DIRECT???

Fifteen minutes dedicated just to this game? I'm in heaven. There's so much they could go over - any other new mechanics, world progression, new and returning power ups, the role of the four Yoshis in the gameplay (I do find it funny how they reused an old render for Yellow Yoshi here), maybe even introduce the new voice of Mario and Luigi? It's such an open book that I can't help but wonder, and the fact that this doesn't feel like a predictable reveal is what is so exciting to me.

Do you think the previously-mentioned Charles Martinet and Shigeru Miyamoto video will be included in this Direct?

Background helps the character art stand out. As much as I've liked the key art for the Switch era games, a lot of them have been very loud and busy from a visual pov. Odyssey, MK8DX, Splatoon 3 etc

Those aren't predictions, those are outright leaks! Thanks for spoiling the direct for all of us

My wet dream surprise would be a Special Edition with the typical steel case, an art book, a new Amiibo (Mario Elephant or the worm pipe) and a DLC for Mario Maker 2 with SMW Theme/enemies/power-ups (and 3 free months of NSO).

Oh shit this is pleasant news to wake up to

I do kinda hope they leave some surprises for the game itself, but will still tune in

I keep seeing this and it's just like, how? What is giving people the impression that this is the route they're going in?
A cynical take could be "Nintendo likes to cut corners and doesn't want to pay actors"
A less cynical take would be "Nintendo wants to preserve Martinet's voice for Mario forever", like how Disney is using AI for James Earl Jones's voice for future Darth Vader appearances.

Nintendo isn't Disney though, the latter has precedent for using AI to recreate near-exact likenesses of past actors. Meanwhile Nintendo was just fine with having a different actor voice Mario in their huge movie.

There's advantages to having real actors, one of which is to represent the character and brand at live events, which would be especially important for Nintendo's mascot.

Using AI for voices doesn't seem like Nintendo's MO. If you read into their development process for BotW / TotK you get an idea of the 'physicality' of it, including using motion capture, foley artists, live orchestras, experimenting with real objects to design in-game assets, and so on. They've deployed AI to do things like remastering textures and I'm sure in various game development tooling, using it to generate the voice of their mascot is out of place.

Zelda is still far ahead in the box art/key art game compared to other franchises. Wish more of them were art pieces instead of renders (which can look good admittedly)

For me it's the exact opposite. They are one of the few companies absolutelly being against NFTs and stuff like that, they don't seem to be guys who jump on AI just because of the hype.

That's because NFTs were just speculative investment schemes equivalent to gambling whereas AI could legitimately produce a lot more content for them for the same amount of inputs.

Nintendo, like most other gaming companies, is investing in AI right now.
