Discussion VGC: Square-Enix is working on a multi platform remake/remaster of Chrono Cross (EDIT: Possibly PS5 Launch Exclusive?)

Honestly I would be perfectly happy with a slightly uprezzed version that plays on a Switch lol. Anything extra is gravy for me

My expectation is a simple remaster like FF8, Legend of Mana or SaGa Frontier.

A 3D remake like Trials of Mana would be a wet dream and mind blowing for everyone.

The worst expectation that you should have is that it's a poorly done "HD" version like FF8 Remaster or FF9 HD. The better expectation is that it's an AI upscale that actually looks good closer to Mana and SaGa remasters. Possible but unlikely is a Trials of Mana budget remake. Don't ever fool yourself into thinking it'll get anything even half the budget of FF7 Remake.

I’m not a big fan of Chrono Cross, but a remaster with smoother/faster battle animations/transitions, higher resolution character models, and some UI improvements is enough to get another purchase out of me.

If they actually go as far as to revise Gil and make the fate of the Chrono cast not as bleak, they could actually win me over entirely.

Am I the only one that never 100% understood this games story even 50% understood it?
Chrono Cross has one of the most convoluted and badly-paced plots I've ever seen in a game, so no, you're not the only one. I honestly kind of love it, but holy crap is it not explained well or (especially) paced out well. The first half of the game is pretty slow and takes its time with a lot of things, but then there's one particular chunk of the game near the end where there are like 14 major plot twists and big reveals within the span of, no joke, like 15 minutes, it's crazy.

Wonder if this will just be a "FF8 Remastered" style thing (Which I wouldn't mind).
I've never actually played CC so i'd definitely do so with a re-release (Especially since Square has been good about adding QoL to the old RPGs)

Would definitely buy. Own it on PS1 but never finished it due to lack of convenience

It's crazy that a lot of the unannounced games in that Nvidia leak are being announced or will be announced. I need to look at the leak again.

It's a remaster going by the Nvidia leak so I'd expect treatment similar to FFVIII a couple years back. FFXI is apparently getting a real remake now though. And FFT and Tactics Ogre are each getting remasters too.

Switch confirmed?
The Romancing Saga remaster sold best on Switch as I believe did the Legend of Mana remaster. It would be foolish not to put this on Switch unless Sony paid for some kind of exclusivity. I just don't see Sony caring that much about a CC remaster for that though.

I assume you mean IX?

Considering the original sold 1.5 million copies worldwide over ~4 years I can’t imagine that Sony would want to pay for exclusivity and Square-Enix would want that deal vs. hitting a wider audience across PS4/Switch/Xbox and PC/Mobile

No more pre rendered backgrounds?

who needs em?

To be honest, I'd be down for a remaster rather than a bigger visual reimagining like Trials of Mana. So much of Chrono Cross's charm for me is in its locations and character design, and I worry they'd lose something along the way. Same with FFIX.
Yes.
Hope they also put Chrono Trigger on more platforms in the run-up to this.
Yes.
And they must almost be done with Chrono Break, right?...Right?
We keep the dream alive.

I understood it just fine after spending an evening or two on the wiki. 😅

Are you talking about Miguel? Because I hate Miguel.

who needs em?

I try to make sure to Yeah! this every time I see you post it.

No, not Miguel, it’s Chronopolis, specifically just the ending parts and boss. In the span of one dungeon and boss fight against FATE (and the following cutscenes) there are approximately 37 plot twists/big reveals, I swear. All of this is from memory and may be slightly wrong, but: You learn what happened to Serge in the storm and why he’s key, you learn about FATE and what it is and has been doing and why, you learn who Harlequinn really is out of nowhere, you learn that killing FATE actually allows the dinos to live and have a floating terra-city, you find out that the dragons wanted this all along and the dragon god is now a thing, you learn who Lynx really is (I think that’s here?)… and I’m sure I’m forgetting some things and there’s a lot more.

And all of this happens or is revealed to the player within a time span of what… 30 minutes? Something like that? I legitimately think it might hold the record for most video game plot twists in that short of an amount of time, it’s ludicrous.

Put me on the regular old upscale remaster camp. I haven’t played this game yet and would like to experience a version close to the original release.

I've always described Chrono Cross as a cake made with the finest ingredients known to man but baked by a systems analyst. I hope they can make it good this time - there's a fantastic game hidden underneath, as its beginning right until the first twist shows.

But he said not to expect too much. I doubt square is crazy enough to bring a budget remake to ps5 alone...

That's dumb enough to be true.
Square makes some weirdo decisions every year.

Oh well, we will see in a few days anyway =)

Unless Sony is giving them a big bag of money, it makes no sense for Square to make a game bound to one system.

Either there's something about the original source code that was lost and Sony is helping Square in this case (the same happened with Mana and SaGa re-releases for Switch), or I'll re-frame what I said already: this really, really feels like the info came from someone who got hold of the video that's going to be premiered at The Game Awards and that shows the PlayStation 5 logo only, but then the full announcement details how the game is also coming to other platforms (PS4 / NSW / PC). It wouldn't be the first time something similar happens at TGA either.

EDIT: The fact that Nate doesn't mention PC in the podcast makes me think even more that the source is a PS-themed trailer rather than a general one.

Echoing the dumb enough to be true sentiment so I don't get my hopes up. More like Chrono Flop, am I right?

Agreed that making this exclusive to PS5 would be odd…not that odd things don’t happen all the time! But it would be odd.

PS5, only, not even PS4 is completely nuts, if it's just a remaster. What's in it for SE? Hell, what's in it for Sony?

Yeah this exact thing happened with Crash Team Racing. Though in this case a PS themed trailer would mention PS4 too.

I wouldn't be shocked at all, Square will make anything exclusive for a while if you give them a bag. That's basically how they operate now. Don't really see the point with this one because I doubt a Chrono Chross remaster is hot property but it's not that weird to me either.

That’s pretty much where I’m at too. People who love CC (me!) are excited, but I can’t see this being a massive hit / all that significant as an exclusive.

I'm not doubting Nate, but a Chrono Cross remaster being exclusive to PS5 makes so little sense that I can't help but wonder that wires must be getting....crossed....somewhere.

Listening to the podcast. I can 100% believe Atlus will port P4Arena to Switch and modern consoles and NOT persona 4 golden or P5R…

This would be the worst outcome for me. I’m a grown adult with disposable cash and I can’t hunt down any of the next gen consoles I want. This would pour salt on the wounds.

I can understand S-E would try temporal exclusivity with Sony, but lol at the idea of selling Cross only at PS5. It would kill the game.
