StarTopic Future Nintendo Hardware & Technology Speculation & Discussion |ST| (New Staff Post, Please read)

BC is bad for business. Don't believe me? Here is WiiU.

it's always unbelievably stupid to discussed BC. This is Nintendo we are talking about and they will do everything they could to make it happen

Was wondering about this too, but I suspect it may hurt them in the long run. I believe the split between digital vs physical in the Switch realm, like docked vs. handheld, is about 50/50.

Nintendo, being Nintendo, could force gamers into buying digital, but all your physical Switch games would still work via digital downloads from the eShop. The issue I have with this though is what someone else mentioned, and that is Internet Speeds across, which could be better in A LOT of areas. I think on a large scale, it’s not up for prime time yet.

And of course, let’s not forget, when we think of fast internet connections, I think Nintendo…
It would hurt them short, medium, & long term. I just don’t see Nintendo actively making a digital only platform nor making BC digital only. I’m not sure how “Nintendo being Nintendo” could actively force gamers into buying digital.

All this talk about backwards compatibility with Switch. Fuck that, how about BC with the 3DS? Cpu runs natively, gpu is emulated. How does the second screen work? Fuck if I know, let Nintendo figure it out

Monolith Soft is the company that can make a game and you’d say “yeah this wouldn’t work on the previous system”. They have that in them. I’m most excited to see what they come up with. You see Xenoblade Chronicles X and it’s like wow this was next gen from the Wii.

From what I understand, the 3DS CPU code cannot be ran natively. The ability for ARM CPUs to be backwards compatible started with ARMv7, and can only go as low as v7. 3DS's CPU is ARMv6.

All prior Nintendo portables capable of BC all included the prior chips for both BC and for particular functionality in the non-BC modes.

How to make Switch 2 backwards compatible without nintendo's help like a true gamer.
Step 1. Buy a switch 2
Step 2. Find a jailbreak
Step 3. ???
Step 4. Install yuzu
Step 5. Profit B)

I do wonder how fast people are gonna find a jailbreak with the switch 2, or if they even will be able to as easily as with the v1 switch 🤔 Any hardware knowledgeable people here that could make an offshoot guess or is it waaaaaay out of the realm of possibility to do

I think you're crossing some wires.

-The backwards compatibility discourse is basically because MVG sees a hurdle that could hinder backwards compatibility and discussion spiraled on whether backwards compatibility can still happen on the next system resolving problems in time for launch.

As for Wii U, there were incidents of consumers buying Wii U games for the Wii not knowing they had to buy a new console to play said version of the games, which served as a cautionary tale about how to name a console successor. I'm not saying they shouldn't re-use the Switch name, I'm just saying it might not work so great for them.

I kinda feel like they were joking..

When looking at the gaming landscape currently. I can't help but think that there will be 2 SKUs. One that will act as a cheaper buy-in to the next generation of Nintendo. But a separate one for those who enjoy larger physical libraries. I know part of the reason I bought the PS5 disc console was because at the time. I still had a fairly sizeable physical library. I have sold most of my physical games these days and purchase exclusively digital at this point. I think with a cheaper, digital-only console, Nintendo could make digital libraries backwards compatible. But give users the choice. This would be to transition to a digital-only future as the trends keep continuing that way. With a more expensive SKU, you can have the consumer who is still attached to their physical library pay the premium to continue using their physical cartridges with some means to play the cartridges. I think putting the burden on the consumer for such a thing makes sense. Nintendo would be able to leverage consumers with large physical libraries very easily to pay the premium. Many would feel comfortable trading in their old systems too if they can carry the physical libraries over to make the price easier to swallow.

I also remember how scarce the digital PS5 was when it launched. It was harder to find than the disc version because many people just wanted the cheapest possible route to the newest generation of games (outside of scalping and supply shortages which were the main issue with inventory). There were also less made, with some users getting disc versions in digital boxes due to supply constraints. But I know very few people who buy physical games these days personally. And now we are seeing a lot of steam towards a PS5 revision this year. And this revision is digital only, and will require an accessory for physical games. I could see future hardware follow similarly. Where the initial release has two SKUs, but a future revision brings everything to one SKU and phases out the console supporting physical cartridges. It just makes too much sense.

One thing I've wondered is why publishers haven't leveraged digital games to be cheaper than physical. That would drive the adoption they want to stop making physical copies. Which is something I think many companies want to cut costs. Besides, they can still sell collector's editions with digital codes. Which enthusiasts panned. But enthusiasts on sites like here, Reddit, or other sites doesn't really reflect how things are currently.

Everyone's talking about forward compatability and backwards compatability but that's soooooooo 1 dimensional man.

Nintendo needs compatability across the Nth dimension, I want to be able to play games from parallel universes with alternative versions of myself.

This is the minimum I expect as a new gimmick from switch 2.

Apologies in advance if this has been discussed or answered. And in the spirit of dropping the “will it have BC” debate, assume this is framed around BC (including Physical) being a certainty.

Given the costs of physical media that some are mentioning as being a barrier, what options does Nintendo have moving forward?

Is there some other storage medium/format they can use while obviously still allowing owners to insert their Switch 1 cards?

Yes, making third games that do not fit on the cartridge require downloading a mandatory patch, as is already the case on Switch with games like NBA or Borderlands.

So much Baiten Caitos talk in this thread. 🧐

On a serious note, everyone is entitled to have their own opinions right now obviously, but from prior information on future strategy, from the current market standards, and from the recent info we have obtained, to me it seems very unlikely that we don't get backward compatibility.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I personally don't recall any major missteps by Nintendo during this Switch era from the big reveal to present day. I think 'Nintendo gonna Nintendo' is just very unlikely when the company seems to have had exceptional leadership in recent years.

Fusee-gelee was a pretty unique lightning in a bottle situation (for modders at least, lol) resulting from Nvidia's negligence with Recovery Mode freely allowing all hell loose with total arbitrary code execution. Chances are any exploits without a modchip are likely out of the question. Seeing a modchip developed for next-gen might also take a while given how much of a PiTA reverse engineering Xecuter's modchip was alone, so starting from scratch again is going to be a nightmare in of itself.
Considering that the Tegra X1+ (i.e. Mariko) can't be hacked without doing a hardware mod, I think the same is applicable to [REDACTED]. The only reason why Nintendo Switch game dumps are happening quickly and well before the official release date is because the Tegra X1 (i.e. Erista) has a vulnerability that can't be fixed (i.e. Fusée Gelée). (Too bad stopping hardware mods is impossible. However, hardware mods should be extremely difficult to do.)

It does make a lot of sense to have a cheaper maybe digital only, less storage console at launch, but only if it at least matches the premium for the regular one. That may also complicate a "lite" down the line. I guess branding wouldn't really be that hard, a $350ish 128/256GB "Redrakted Digital", and a $450ish 256/500GB "Redrakted Deluxe". Or something like that. Could easily still have "lite" or "pro" versions later. Could get confusing if they wanted say either or both of a "Deluxe Lite or Digital Lite" version later. I'm sure they'd keep the number of SKUs minimal (maybe only making a digital Lite later), the only reason a digital seems possible is for extra cost cutting, and how easy it would still be to re-use shells/assembly etc. So its no really a new build.

While were talking about confusing SKUs, what on Earth are Microsoft gonna call their next consoles? They'll surely still want "series" in the name right? Probably don't want to abandon the "current Series" platforms at all, so we may not even see true exclusives for like 2028 next gen or whatever and maybe still have games need to target the series S? I don't think that's an issue this gen, but with talks of console devs wanting to keep current gen alive for a long time, that might tick people/game devs off a bit. (Heavy speculation about the distant future, what does a console generation even mean in 2028 or later).
If it were me, I'd go Series S2, Series X2, Series ZS, ZX, Series S/X 28'. keep it simple. But they specifically chose names like 360 to not have smaller numbers than Sony, so who knows.

Also, it doesn't sound like Microsoft wants a pro model this gen, but if Sony does it and it is successful they may change their minds. In that case there could be another name in the mix. That'd be spreadsheet territory.

As long as it’s not called Switch U then they’ll be fine.

I don’t see a future where THE LEGEND OF ZELDA isn’t open-world (or as Nintendo would put it, open-air). Zelda is the best franchise Nintendo could use to have an IP of theirs enter the open-world genre of gaming. Revert to something akin of older gamers would feel like that: a step back. There’s nothing preventing Nintendo from offering older Zelda experiences via other developers, like Grezzo remaking Link’s Awakening. Yes, Nintendo should offer an original, older Zelda experience, but right now, they have incentive to just remake classics and release ‘em. And from the looks of Breath of the Wild’s and Tears of the Kingdom’s performance, open-world Zelda is here to stay. It’s a hardware and software seller. Consider it one of Nintendo’s pillars of software.

This is the problem. This would be a very big risk for Nintendo. They know Zelda and open world sticks, but a new IP? That’s gonna be harder to fulfill. This can be resumed by the age old question of: “why?”. Why do we need to revert Zelda to the older formula? Why make a new open world IP? And the other question: if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Is there, really? Internet buzz doesn’t equate to the reality of things. The last, traditional formula Zelda we got was Twilight Princess HD, but if we go by TP GameCube and Wii sales, about nine million people bought that game, so I’m sure approximately nine million Switch owners would be down for a Zelda game much like TP, but I think Nintendo would relegate that to someone else.

I think it’s time the fans admit that Open-Air Zelda is the new traditional formula.
Just give us the rest of the old games and I’ll be happy to concede on the 3D front.

There should be plenty of room for smaller scale 2D games however.

The thought that a ‘new’ open air Zelda could be 7+ years away is a horrible thought!

Yuzu for Android primarily works on Snapdragon devices, which unlike most mobile GPUs have custom graphics drivers
Even with post-Orin SoCs, I doubt that emulator's something NX2 is gonna run smoothly as you might think.

Nintendo is clearly working to have most of their franchises and games on switch, they won't just start from the scratch again with the successor.

Also the successor being backwards compatible means switch games will keep selling. Starting from the scratch again seeing what Sony and Microsoft are doing would be all but "easy transition". There is no scenario in which the successor isn't BC imo.

Most Nintendo devs can do this. Most will. Hell, Camelot made a huge-ass leap from gcn to wii u despite their tiny size

Have we speculated on the security of the device yet? Is it going to be a fortress which might prevent any form of piracy in the long run (no emulator, decrypted rom dumping or even homebrew) or is Nvidia going to fuck it up again for us? Not like we can predict this but it would be interesting to see how long it would take until the first PoC.

And you'll probably need an Nvidia GPU with tensor cores to emulate it.

Are people buying the Switch at this stage in the systems life cycle the sort of people who will buy Switch 2 on day 1?

Generally, some people would just buy the old gen for cheaper and then wait 5-6 years until the next-gen gets cheaper too. But then we have this console that didn't have a price cut in more than 6 years (it even got the OLED model for $50 more), that's uncharted territory.

If we have full BC and these people know and understand the differences between the old and the new, then it's a matter of price difference. If we were talking about $400 vs $200 or $500 vs $250, many would just buy the cheapest one for sure. Now, what's going to be the gap in price between switch v2/oled and switch 2? Will Nintendo be aggressive cutting last's gen price, and will Switch 2 have different SKU's with different prices? No idea. I'll just say that if the difference is no more than $100, many would choose the successor IMO.

Oh, and of course there's always new people buying their first console ever. For the "hardcores", Switch is here since 2017, but for them it's really something new that they decided they wanted to have (maybe after having watched a new game AD for example, or because they got their first job and can now choose what and which one to buy)

You never know, but I would assume Nvidia isn't going to fuck up again. Mariko still can't be breached without a mod chip I believe.

Don't worry, they will name the successor MySwitch, to emphasize their business wish that everyone owns their own Switch. You have two kids? Buy everyone their own MySwitch, because it is not OurSwitch!

In a desperate attempt to discuss anything other than BC 😅 what multiplats do people expect might release in 2024 for Switch NG (assuming the hardware itself releases in 2024).

(Apologies if this isn't valid discussion for this thread, I know this is supposed to be focused on hardware and technology, but we have no new info and are going around in circles on that front, so hopefully it's OK to discuss this briefly until we get any new hardware/technology rumours/info?
Plus, this discussion will probably invite technology discussion with regard to the feesibility and ease of developing certain ports, especially compared to Switch 1, but also compared to PS4 and Xbone, so i actually think it counts. Let me know if not!)

I think the dream is Star Wars Outlaws. It would set a great precedent moving forward and is such a big IP I'm sure it would sell very well.
I could imagine a late AC mirage port if the console releases in H1. We've had many AC games on Switch.

Hogwarts legacy could get an enhanced port too since it sold so well on existing platforms.

No doubt fortnite will be there day 1 at 60fps this time.

I think the new Atlus game might make it, Metaphor something I can't remember exactly. Although their decision to ignore Switch 1 with persona 3 is truly baffling.

I bet Cyberpunk would be possible but given how badly it ran on PS4 and Xbone they might not think its worth the struggle? Do we know where the bottlenecks were for Cyberpunk on last gen? And if so, do we know if Drake will likely address them?
