Not expecting much, maybe a date. This game will probably get delayed again lol.

They mentioned august will have more info, hopefully the final date (but really, at this point is 50/50 between launch date and "we need a little more time to polish it" lol)

Yup, once I saw the more info in august, I knew its a coin toss at best if it comes out this year

@SirArthur and @SammyJ9 , Cold Steel 3 I believe took me 102 hours? That was also doing every side quest. It’s my favorite Cold Steel game with so much payoff for Sky, Crossbell, and Cold Steel fans, my only major knock is the combat being notably easier since they give you just so much stuff to dominate enemies.

Cold Steel IV I think took me 142 hours I think 🙃. I loved it, but it’s way too long lol.

I agree with this sentiment (so far). Specially after playing azure early this year, it was great. You are right thought, battles were earier lol
Spirit Uni + Attack order + First craft damage up quartz + S-craft = Win

Finished CS3, after a month of procrastinating on the second to last chapter. Comparing it to CS1 and CS2, its an improvement in combat, graphics and scope (no surprise). From a narrative point, its a rollercoaster and I think the reason is because of its length. I clocked in 105 hours (I did all the side quest) versus 65 and 70 for CS1 and CS2, respectively (with all the side quests). It had really good highs but the lows were like molasses lol.

I did not like cast at first but they grew on me. It helps that the core cast was "smaller". It was cool seeing old characters and their roles in the story. Since I played Zero/Azure in japanese, hearing the english dub of some of the characters was a slap to the face. Not that they were bad but they felt odd given how cartoony some of them are. Debating on playing CS4 with the japanese cast lol.

Overall had a great time with the game, really been enjoying myself as I dived deeper into the trails game. I had 2 crashes(?), basically the game would load for ages, some of the bigger areas aren't optimized. I wont start CS4 for a bit, got Ghost Trick and Raincode for the future, and my copy of Reverie arrives a week after release so by the time I get to it, I hope we get Kuro news (or Ys X).
I like how the opinions are all over the place. Depending on who you asked, CS3 is a good improvement or the final nail in the coffin for the series. And I totally agree on the (smaller) cast. The characters interact a lot more with everyone, instead of just Rean and one other and got more screentime.

And on the highs and lows of the game, how'd you rank the chapters?

CS3 has been on my radar a long time, but I want to play Azure first. Going back to more of what I loved about CS1 sounds like a blast, along with the things you pointed out. But that does sound REALLY long. I think my CS2 playthrough was around 80 hours, though? Been a while. And it'll definitely be interesting to see the characters come together from different games.
You have to add 20 hours to SirArthur's playtime to reach mine 😅

CS3 repeats CS1's structure, just that there are fewer, but longer chapters. And Rean is of course no longer a student.

Really? I did not know people felt strongly about CS 3 lol.

If I were to rank the chapter:
3>2>1>4, not including the final chapter
as a package. There are great moments in all of them but some part weigh a bit more heavy.

For example I think I like
3
the most cause of the variety
Multiple teams, card fight, nice areas to explore and the story implication

And the reason I like
4
the least (I don't dislike it), its that since it needs to wrap a bunch of threads it, the pace is slowed down to the point it took me like a couple of weeks to finish the
festival
cause I had no interest at that point lol.

EDIT: The spoiler tag makes the message a bit wonky lol. I did it just in case.

Radiant Historia on the 3DS has really sucked me in over the last few days. I was worried about starting a JRPG with only a couple weeks until Reverie, but I think I will be able to finish it in time. I don't expect it to happen, but I would love to see Atlus put out some more "traditional" JRPGs like this one every once and a while, sort of like the HD2D initiative from Square.

The festivals basically every game has take so damn long and I dread them. It's best to force through the events and be done with it.

And the end chapter 3 is just pure hype, fighting that boss. And having Aurelia in your party. Lots of fun.

And after Reverie, I guess Kuro and Ys X news soon.

My Trails Into Reverie ST is done! I plan to post it in roughly 36 hours just in case some people get their copies early. I'm...deeply skeptical NISA will get the Limited Editions out early as they usually do since they are overhauling their online store and there has been a ton of grief with it. I annoyingly got fooled by the old order payment email they sent out alongside the Reverie emails and they still haven't canceled my duplicate order 🙃. Hopefully we'll all be playing together close to launch!

I did finally get around to finishing Cold Steel IV yesterday after a last minute push to do so in advance of Reverie

the length of it combined with the general structure of it combined with it being the 4th game in the arc combined with the sheer amount of characters made the game feel like such a chore to get through a lot of the time even if the continuity did lead to some cool moments here and there

3rd is probably my favorite game in the series so I have some high hopes that Reverie's structure will be much more to my liking

Rolling credits on the Final Fantasy 2 Pixel Remaster right now. Fun game, kinda weird the leveling, not a fan but I don't hate the leveling system like many others do. I've now played the first 2 FF games. Gonna take a break from the series a bit. Next rpg is Persona 3 Portable.

Hard to say without full context since the interview will be publish later. I would venture to guess that we will get an announcement around December, since previous games were announced in a concert or their meetings (Zero/Azure/Reverie/Ys X, and I think Nayuta were announced in that timeframe).

The interesting question would be if the localization version will come to switch? They havent done it yet in Japan, but it could be a Zero/Azure situation were the west got the version first.

Oh boy, here we go!

I'm still in the middle of Second Chapter.

Loving. It. So. Much.

The Interview is out. Maybe I should make a thread but seems like a bit much lol.

Biggest takeaway: They are working on something not Ys or Trails and with the recent Xanadu switch port (please announce a western release lol) that had weird teases, it feels like a follow up to that but who knows.

Great interview! Thanks for sharing :)

Late last night I finished Golden Sun The Lost Age and I liked it much more than the first one! There is a core foundation between the two games with the combat system and all the menus, but they are fairly different in execution I found. Whereas the first game was a more traditional JRPG by being more character and event driven, The Lost Age is much more open in structure even before you get the boat as you can tackle multiple quests at once. There is a disappointing trade off here in that the game is far easier especially if you take advantage of crafting weapons and armor. It makes sense the game is easier when you have multiple places you can go at once, but it makes far less sense once you are funneled back towards specific points. I finished so many rounds of combat in one turn, often with just basic attacks which wears you down over time. Boss battles are a great exception, but it feels like there are even less than there were in Golden Sun. I was glancing at a guide to check progress as I went and I noticed I did leave some bonus dungeons unfinished. Seems like most of them unlock right at the end of the adventure so maybe that content is more interesting (Golden Sun’s Crossbone Island was quite good), but I was ready to wrap my Golden Sun adventures up so I went straight for the final boss which was my favorite fight in the game by far. The ending was pretty solid even though I would have liked a longer epilogue. But yeah, overall I’m glad I played both games. I don’t have the third game so this is the end of my Golden Sun adventures altogether. I’ve always heard it didn’t live up to the GBA games, so maybe that’s for the best.

With Golden Sun The Lost Age completed, my final Wii U VC games project is going to go on pause for a while. At the very least, I won’t pick it up again until I’ve completed my high priority games: Final Fantasy XVI, Rain Code, Trails Into Reverie (ST is up btw!), and Pikmin 4. When I do return though, F-Zero GP Legend and Mario Golf are up next which obviously I won’t discuss here, but then I’m moving into the final three. I’m not sure what order I’ll tackle these in, but it’s replays of Donkey Kong 64, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Mario and Luigi Super Star Saga. I’m super excited to replay and talk about FFTA and MLSSS in this thread when the time comes so yeah hopefully in a few months!

I've played more Trails than Ys games (only Origin and 8, a little of 9) but I've felt that their soundtracks have a particular identity to them like a ton of sister/spinoff series (SMT vs Persona for example).

But CS4 has the most Ys music energy in the early parts (I'm about 11 hours in) and I got nothing bad to say about lol.

Speaking of DQ, a ton of info dropped and it looks better the original trailer lol.

Having never played a Monsters game, is it sort of like if the whole game was like the monster arena parts of DQ8? Just expanded into a game? Because I really liked having a monster team and recruiting in DQ8, it was a blast.

No , the arena is part of it, but there is usually a story tied, the main difference is just your monsters fight instead of you. It's similar to the concept of pokemon or digimon in that sense (though it has it's unique features so it's not a clone)

Random dungeons, this is def going to add replayability

Coach Joe’s Dungeon Gym – Explore these randomly generated dungeons and battle legions of powerful monsters. Each dungeon comes with unique requirements that require players to carefully assess and construct their party. Dispatch the boss that awaits in the final room to earn rare items that will aid you in raising ever-stronger allies. This DLC includes the ‘cake-maker’s clobber’ outfit.

There are interesting monster collecting games. I've mostly play the Joker series of games which has some of the wackiest characters in the franchise.

To this day I love the DQJ1 commercial, my first DQ game lol.

I'm giving the Trails series another chance. I played the first 2 games on psp back in the day. I now bought the upgraded Steam version and played it for 2-3 hours on my Rog Ally. Nice, although a bit chatty.

About to go on the Hawaii trip in P5R, I bought the fighting game before going and that was a mistake because the inputs are so finnicky and I had to reload like 5 times to do it. At least I'm close to maxing out Guts...

Also got Fortune's ability to strengthen Confidants and man it's a godsend. I'm on rank 4 on Maruki and got one of those "I don't think my bond will deepen yet" scenes so I boosted him immediately. Looking forward to clearing the fifth palace so I can spend time on my Confidants, just hit 6 on Akechi as well.

I haven't watched this yet but according to Siliconera we might have yet another origin story on the series name:

Around the 8:24 mark, the meaning behind the “Final Fantasy” name came up. Sakaguchi mentioned how Fighting Fantasy’s title influenced it. He brought up how Dragon Quest’s name could be shortened, and the team wanted a game that could be abbreviated in a similar way with the Roman alphabet, which led to FF. The group also discussed the urban legends behind the title and debunked them.

I am trying to play Persona 4 Golden now, I vibe with the atmosphere of this game a lot. Just 1 hour in though, played on VITA on release but not more than 10 hours. I also tried 5 Royal a few weeks ago and made also a good impression on me, but I just feel more comfortable on this rural setting, there is something special that makes you feel at home, like playing through a good slice of life anime series.

I don't know if this comfy vibe will last tho, maybe the gamey aspects (the town serving as a place to raise stats as opposed as a place to socialize and live in) will bring the thing down for me in the long run.

Also I HAVE to play Trails to Azure soon. Played through Zero on november and liked it a lot, although sometimes I think they go overboard with the chattiness and although I love talking to npcs in games, certainly you can take 1+ hour to "check" the new dialogues in Crossbell and encounter a whole lot of nothing, superflous dialogue that you will forget in a few days. Not always the case and there is interesting little stories and characters for sure, but being the worldbuilding the main selling-point of the series, I just wish there was more "density" to the whole deal. I started with FC and went in order, the only thing that gives a little bit of anxiety is not liking the modern sagas (Cold Steel and forward). It's just a huge time sink that I fear can possibly feel underwhelming in the long run, I hope that is not the case for me. I like a lot what I have played thus far tho.

I need to start P3P at some point. But gonna see if I can get a rhythm going on fviii or Ryza first

Some reviews of Atelier Marie

Price critic aside (which is a valid critic with how current KT manages things), found interesting how modern gamers, or people that weren't familiar with the roots of the franchise look at the simplicity and how short is the game considering the base material. The original one was pretty much menu based and even though you can now explore in 3d, they still keep it simple and of course it expects you to play it multiple times to get the different endings. Found funny the comments in the like of "Oh yeah , want a comfy experience.... WAIT 10 hours???? thats TOO much comfy"

So Ryza or the Marie remake?

I’m definitely interested in Marie but it can wait till after I finish Ryza and it’s on sale

The way I see it Marie is geared toward the hardcore fans of the series. Not because it's difficult, but rather because it's very, very basic, even with the fresh 3d paint coat, so it's not going to show how the post Arland games (when it got more complex, and had more story) actually play, and it's not going to be apreciated the same (hell I already saw some comments with the "this should've been a mobile game" )

Watch it not being localized like Ygdra and Gloria Union. Being a Dept. Heaven fan is suffering

I…don’t think I’ve seen a Super Mario RPG inspired game before. Curious to see how it shakes out.

I was picking it up anyway, but 10 hour length is a good selling point for me right now lol.

While I’m here, very excited This Way Madness Lies is coming to Switch so soon! Zeboyd makes fun games!

Yeah, after having 70+ hours with sophie 2 and Ryza 3 I can use a 10 hour atelier lol

Yeah, that’s not an issue for me either… plus I still gotta finish Ryza first so I can wait for a sale

That announcement reminded me I still have cosmic star heroine in my backlog. Considering starting it tonight

I really need to beat Cosmic Star Heroine. Really dug what I played, but I couldn’t commit to it when it came out so it entered my backlog.

Feeling conflicted in P5R. In Vanilla, I used Morgana/Makoto/Ryuji. I wanted to try to use the other party members in Royal, and I've been sticking with Ann and Yusuke, but I just got Haru and I kinda don't want to dump Ryuji when I've already put in a lot of time on him and maxed out his Persona. I like Haru but she just comes so damn late.

I kind of just rotated through all of the party members with the in-battle party-swapping skill, leveling them equally based on what weaknesses I was trying to exploit. With the way the game is set up, it's not difficult to max out everyone.

Regarding Haru, yeah she's later, but in Royal, you'll have... even more opportunities to utilize her in battle. So I wouldn't stress about fitting in any teammate you think seems cool.

Decided that for Okumura’s Palace I would keep Ryuji with Ann and Haru and after I’ll swap Yusuke back in. Keeping Haru was smart because her Psi spells are super useful in the dungeon and boss battle.

I was really nervous about Okumura after hearing the horror stories but I managed a win on my first try. it was down to the wire though, had about 90 seconds left. I definitely wasted time on the third and fourth robot waves trying to take them out before they ran away, but I was really lucky to have a bunch of Personas with really strong Bless spells (thank you Alarm Fusion).

Hoping I can at least beat the vanilla route by the end of the month so I can access the Royal content. Almost done with Maruki’s Confidant.

EDIT: Also I beat the final level of Power Intuition and I have no idea how I did that last combo successfully because I didn’t do anything different from the last 5 or so tries.

Haru is really useful in Okumura's Palace for sure, I think that's about the only time I really used her much. She just feels like her skills are spread too thin especially late game and there are better options. Although everyone is good enough to be perfectly usable, especially with the added Royal content.

It's been 26 years, and it still feels unreal that not only we have a Remake of Atelier Marie but also the port of the PSX game. Glad to see more people will be able to experience this. Also kudos to KT to add double covers with the original Atelier Marie art

I should be wrapping up Zelda today or tomorrow after putting off the story for so long, so I can finally start something new soon! Honestly, the FFXVI demo really made me want to play it at launch, but I've already decided to play games from my backlog next.

I couldn't decide whether to continue with Yakuza or Trails (both long overdue), so I'm going to play Kiwami 2 and Sky the Third back to back and naively hope I can finish both before Pikmin 4 lol.
Update: I actually could have finished both of these before Pikmin comes out, but I ended up going for the platinum trophy in Kiwami 2 (which I got a couple days ago), so Trails is sadly going to have to wait until August.

I finished Final Fantasy XVI tonight! I think I need to sit on it a few days to really decide how it all fits in a bigger picture in relation to other Final Fantasy games and also against the other games from this year for my top ten GOTY list. Not sure when and where I’ll share those thoughts when I have them, but I did at least write a short post in the ST I’ll reshare here for now.

After 56 hours, I rolled credits in Final Fantasy XVI tonight and the ending was as spectacular as I hoped. There had been a weak stretch from the end of the Bahamut fight to the point of no return as Ultima stinks, but the final side quests and the final sequence with its big emotional moments and awesome action delivered.

I think I need a few days to sit on it for where it all fits exactly in the grand scheme of things, but for the more immediate review, despite some messy and weak elements (Bearers and the ultimate villain), overall I had a great time playing Final Fantasy XVI. The combat is awesome, I really liked Clive and the characters who joined with him, the graphics and music are spectacular, and the big Asura’s Wrath set pieces 100% delivered. Outside of the Chronolith Trials and Final Fantasy mode (both of which I’m not feeling), I did everything available and I’m walking away very satisfied overall.
I’m moving on now fully into Trails Into Reverie which I’m already really excited about from the brief two hours I’ve played. Reuniting with all of the characters so far, both playable and NPCs, and knowing I have this last big adventure together ahead with them and so many more is just incredibly appealing.

Glad to see you enjoyed it, it's going to be one of my next games soon. Trying to wrap up Raincode before I get back into an RPG (other than still noodling around with Diablo 4 here and there). I have a fair bit of time to catch up on games before Starfield, since I'm not much of a Pikmin guy, so I'm planning to cut down a bit of the backlog soon.

Having a blast with cosmic star heroine, bout 5 hours in been using it as my evening game instead of AI Somnium. Really enjoying it.

Still trying to decide if I’m focusing on FFVIII or Ryza 1 as my main game for a bit

I really have to get back to Rain Code! I got as far as booting it up and moving the character an inch before realizing I was too tired the day I started it to keep going lol. Reverie, Rain Code, Pikmin 4, and This Way Madness Lies are my high priority games until Nayuta in September so I have about two months to get everything done. I’m getting Starfield a few weeks after launch, so I’m curious where that will fit in. Historically, Bethesda games haven’t hooked me much, but I’m really intrigued by what they’ve shown so far. Starfield potentially aside, Reverie seems like my last colossally large new game this year so I’m looking forward to playing a variety of more shorter games in the back half this year.

Plans never work out when it comes to games lol. After I finished Ghost Trick, I was gonna start RainCode (I did), then CS4 (10 hours in) while I waited for Reverie to show up.

The next thing I know I am 30 hours into P4G lol. And so far I am having a great time, and I can see why some people like it over 5 (and 3 I guess). Its structure is inline with handheld games (reminds me a little of Zero), short area, tight story and nice atmosphere. Combat is ok, spells feel like they do set damage (increases are minimal) and some bosses are sponges (Looking at you
Weird baby
). The cast is great, there are conv that feel from the late 2000s lol.

But yeah its been fun, Reverie arrives tomorrow, and I need to get back to Raincode so I picked a bad game to invest in lol.
