News Nintendo Direct announced for June 21 (40 minutes long, focused on games releasing this year, 7AM Pacific, 10AM Eastern, 4PM Central European)

I wonder if Nintendo was never planning on revealing the Peach game here until they saw the reception to the Mario movie? It felt a little shoehorned in and was probably going to be a full September direct reveal.
It could be a mix of that and need for some filler.

I don't think most people are interested in the tournament segment they did.

I don’t think the Peach game is going to be a 2D platformer. Especially with Peach being playable in a 2D platformer this year.

That was one of the best Nintendo Directs in YEARS. What an incredible lineup! I'm legit shocked, banger after banger for me. LOTS of games I'll absolutely be buying. Awesome stuff!

That what I was thinking tbh. Peach's stock went very high after that movie. So much praise for how they portrayed her and Anya Taylor-Joy's performance. Capitalize on that.
We’re going to have to hear from Grubb. Not sure what else to expect. Will they still do a Pokémon presentation? Something undies?
Nate said in his predictions video that he thinks there will be a deeper dive into Pikmin 4 next month so maybe that's it???

What if the Peach game is the 2D game in development by EAD Tokyo, and NOT Donkey Kong?
That would be a cool plot twist lol and what if 3D game is really DK?

Or there isn't any DK game in development lol.

Or there are 3 proyects at developments at EPD Tokyio; 2D Princess Peach, 3D Linear DK, 3D Sandbox Mario with very heavy assistance from 1-UP Studio and NST.

The Peach games looks like it'll be some kind of action/adventure game and not a platformer. Wouldn't be surprised if the game also has a stronger puzzle element.

How for sure are the DK rumours? It’s been so long that I forget.

I’m not super into DK, but my brother loves him and has zero faith in getting a new game any time soon.

I’m thinking F-Zero GX will be a shadowdrop in the September direct. It’s the only rumored GC game which makes sense to me to drop then.
Yeah, that definitely sounds right. Perhaps TTYD will be announced during the first 2024 Direct, since Mario RPG will be out by then, or during the June 2024 Direct.

I'm surprised you're wavering on whether we see Prime 4 this year! To me, its absence here despite releasing Prime Remastered as a shadowdrop in February only reinforces that we will 100% see the game in September.

I sure hope that small little indie game “Super Mario Bros: Wonder” does ok.

But seriously, I am curious what kind of numbers a new 2D Mario on Switch will do. Add a special controller and/or console and Nintendo has my $$

You know, nobody is forcing you to go and read his Twitter posts...
In the spirit of the recent staff communication, i'd like to apologize for this post. I'm sorry if it came off as rude or demeaning, i assure you that wasn't my intention, but i understand if it came across that way. Again, i'm sorry.

@Catalyst

In few days this thread will die and most people will either go to General Nintendo thread, to game specific threads but most people will disappear until late August. This is when you can tell that Direct Speculation season is over.

Today I learned that 2D Mario is not a big game because it make Nintendo a lot of money over time instead of all at once

It’s ok, I didn’t think you were being rude.

I don't think anybody with a clear, strong track record has ever backed the specifics of EPD Tokyo creating a DK game. Personally, I always thought it made a lot of sense, but that's no grounds for it turning out to be true.

Certainly the Peach game makes EPD 8's 2D project more interesting. I'd also bet money on Nintendo doing something with DK somewhere, even if it's not at EPD. The IP is too important for it to remain absent for much longer, I think.

You guys are great, but I am a creature of hype.

So, if I know we aren’t in Direct time, I choose to leave because during the 2-ish weeks before a Direct, it’s unhealthy how often I check this place. I will be much more casual once I see Prime 4, but I pull myself away for my own sanity.

Does the whole Peach game take place on a stage. They talked about her stepping on a particular part of the stage. They showed her entering a door to the back making me think the whole stage will then change to what she’s entering.

She's also not wearing a crown. Very curious indeed

Peach Game developer options, CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTER:

  • EPD 8
  • Next Level Games (pretty graphics, announced alongside a remaster of another title of theirs)
  • Good-Feel (previously worked on 2D Wario Land, Kirby, and Yoshi titles)
  • NST (did heavy lifting for Bowser's Fury, previous experience with Mario franchise includes Mario vs DK titles, Super Mario Maker 3DS and Captain Toad ports)

Hot damn I'm now leaning towards NST or a joint EPD 8 x NST game. NST have history with the Super Mario franchise and with puzzle-platformers.

A fun Direct! Some observations

  • Pokémon stuff seems fun
  • Persona 3 Reload not coming to Switch is a bummer. Sigh. Maybe the next system.
  • P5 Tactica looks good though. Maybe it will quench my Devil Survivor thirst
  • Super Mario RPG :0
  • Square-Enix remains a staunch supporter on the system with Dragon Quest Monsters and Star Ocean.
  • Hey it’s Batman, finally
  • Metal Gear Collection, cool.
  • Princess Peach game… hmmmm
  • HD reissues of Pikmin 1 & 2 and Luigi’s Mansion 2? Nice surprises.
  • Pikmin 4 looks good.
  • Another Warioware? Neat.
  • Super Mario Wonder looks amazing.

I do wonder why Nintendo had such an empty February. Still, while new games are coming out, it’s mostly smaller scale stuff. Wonder when news will break on the Switch successor.

Absolutely not EPD8 for me, the game is not even 2D. The 3D hiring was for 3D Mario and 2D for DK.

How sure are we that EPD8 has two projects underway and isn't doing something with both 2D and 3D levels, eg a Mario Generations or an expansion of Odyssey's wall-merge

I actually wonder if the Peach game might be Int Sys and it's a spinoff/successor type of deal for Paper Mario, though that's purely vibes-based

For me

Day 1 Buy: Mario RPG, Mario Wonder, Pokemon DLC, Sonic Superstars
Probably buy: Pikmin 4, Pikmin 1+2, Peach Game, DQ Monsters, Penny's Big Breakaway, Star Ocean 2, Detective Pikachu 2, MGS Collection
Probably skip but interested: Dark Moon Remaster, Warioware, Gloomhaven, Fae Farm, Silent Hope, Arkham Trilogy

Gloomhaven is an incredible board game, but I already own it and still have tons left to play.

Can you believe it's been almost an entire 4 hours since the last Direct? I think it's time we're due for another one soon.

RESETING THE CLOCK

This was some Oscar level acting

The best part was that Koizumi was surprised he is showing Luigi's Mansion but then just says that he hopes we are looking forward to it.

Yeah I think if the game version of gloomhaven is good that people shouldn't sleep on it.

Some things of note from the direct

We got Luigi’s Mansion 2 remake/port
I hope Samus returns gets the same treatment!

They just straight up dropped Pikmin 1 & 2 HD 1 month prior to Pikmin 4!

We can’t be shocked at the notion that they would try the same with Prime 2 & 3 before 4 releases.

Paper Mario TTYD remake next year I feel it in my nipples.

Honest thoughts on the Direct tho: I feel like that they were gonna do the same thing as last year initially and just have a Partner's Direct or something initially then threw this together. Many announced things were teases and whatnot and I think they borrowed some things from the September Direct to include here last minute. I'm thinking September's Direct is actually gonna be quite a bit bigger and have a couple of last minute megatons for the coming future.

I'm really intrigued by it and wondering who's developing it. Is this an internal game, a subsidiary, or someone else? Visually it looks really good.

Definitely looks like they're aiming for Peach to have a very different play style to Mario, which makes sense, so it means this could be something really quite different. Interested to find out more and I hope Nintendo recognise that Peach isn't the only princess who deserves a starring turn.
I think it's probably TOSE, it was the developer for Super Princess Peach in 2005.

Maybe Day 1: Peach game, Mario RPG, Pikmin 1/2
Eventually: Detective Pikachu, Star Ocean 2, Arkham Trilogy, Warioware, Luigi Mansion 2

Depending on how good Mario Wonder is, this could be the best year of Switch taking the crown from 2017. I never thought I would even be entertaining that thought.

with the direct ending and totk just getting some amiibo announcements, do we think the game will just not have an expansion pass?

Could be that there's some spoilerish story dlc so they're giving totk some more breathing room

I'm a big fan of Metal Gear Colid, glad we're finally getting a collection
