Reviews The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom | Review Thread

The Silent Realms are a really good example of content reuse that wouldn't work as well if you weren't familiar with the areas they're set in beforehand. Also the only fun stealth sections in a series with a long long history of terrible and pointless stealth sections. They don't deserve to be singled out in a game that has pointless crap like Scrapper or the Skyview Temple revisit. Should've probably been side quests though.

The strangest thing about this is that they did it with Zelda, a series that was from the beginning fundamentally about collecting things to progress. Same deal with Odyssey. The studied ambivalence--sometimes crossing into hostility--to collecting things is so weird in games that, at the end of the day... still run on collecting things.
I'm not fan of silent realm and stealth sections in general. Don't remember about scrapper though I enjoyed Skyview Temple revisit. I really enjoy backtracking and discovering new secrets in old locations. One of the reasons I feel I will like Totk and for Hollow Knight being my favorite game from the last 10 years.

EDIT: Tadpole definitely wasn't my thing.

For anyone keeping track, NME's 8/10 review was added to MC, which dragged TotK down to the middle of the "96" pack - 12 games ahead of it, 13 games behind it. I think the 97 dream is very dead, but let's see if we can maintain a 96!

If I get a paid scholarship for monitoring/science research I'll gladly spend my very first payment on a voucher to buy this and pre order Prime 4 or next Mario. That will be August at earliest tho so I'll probably end up just renting the game to play through all of my July vacation.

I never doubted it would be good, nor that it would me massively bigger and better than BotW. But the amount of praise it's receiving and everything I've seen so far makes me just want to play it so badly, damn.

GotY 2023 definitely.

Seeing a lot of "If Redfall got shit for being 30 fps why doesn't Zelda" arguments on Twitter.

I think we found our culprit as to why this will probably end up getting review bombed like everything else does these days.

Xbox fanboys really clutching at straws with that argument.

I don’t know where we got the fact that “repitition” is skyward sword’s problem aside from the three imprisoned fights.

I wouldn’t consider the game repetitive at all, just poorly paced and padded at times. There’s just mundane shit that didn’t need to be there at all

If anything, the repetition in Skyward Sword's world design is probably one of the more interesting things about it structure!

Redfall wishes 30fps was its only problem

I need this game to be under Elden Ring so I can be a petty bitch on social media

I was adamant about this when the outrage was going on - if Redfall was a fantastic experience, 30 fps would have been a footnote, perhaps largely forgotten. But it wasn’t.

Zelda has had 6 years of people knowing damn well it was never going to be more than 30 without being on new hardware. And unlike Redfall, it sounds like it’s an improbably good game despite technical limitations.

Weirdos.

frame rates matter more for some genres than others too

like I don't really care all that much that this is 30 but if say Mario Kart was it would kill any interest I had in it

The only thing I really disliked was the revisit to the first dungeon. Oh yeah, and the three imprisoned fights. The tadtones were kinda whatever to me but at least I didn't hate them like most. But I really loved the part where you had to sneak around to get your gear back, and also every return trip to the desert had you doing really cool things.

Idk why I am wasting the words even bothering to point it out but Redfall being 30fps wasn't the issue.

It was the "oh, it's a 60fps game, but it's not ready for launch and we are going to patch it later", being a massive red flag and a sign game coming in hot.. Like a basic performance mode like that not being there when the game was releasing probably meant that the rest of the game had a whole lot more issues and yeah it turns out it's not finished and just flat out sucked so they didn't feel like it was worth the effort to delay it again

i think the fact that the game got great scores and not many controversial reviews has caused people to look for stuff to complain about or bring up fanboy nonsense from twitter. it's probably better to just enjoy the game and celebrate its amazing reception rather than looking for stuff to be mad/annoyed at.

The greatest nightmare for a review thread, no negative reviews.
They're starting to criticize future reviews that are not even written yet but that for sure will lower the metacritic score

Here's my TotK review

0/10

Game isn't even playable, never have I spent so much time staring literally at nothing that I can't even consider it enjoyable on any level

My copy still hasn't arrived :(

Why would anyone deliberately go to Twitter to look for stuff to be mad/annoyed at anyway?

I did think having to go back to the 3 regions a fourth (!) time was really stretching it. Like the stuff you have to do is pretty fun but it felt like we were gearing towards the end and it really hurt the pacing.

Be reusing the same 3 regions 3+ times throughout the game.

Considering 1 day after review Elden Ring was 97 and the 12th most acclaimed game I think Totk will still fall more.
Didn't check BOTW but if my memory is not failing me it was still 98 one day later.

If it was Belda, you would give it a -1/10. Stop giving Nintendo preferential treatment!

It was going to get review bombed the moment Nintendo announced it was 70 bucks.

it's such a stupid argument- Xbox fanboys probably feeling hurt because they've had very little to celebrate this gen. 30fps in Redfall got shit because they announced 60fps would come later after the game always being shown at 60fps during previews,etc... It's also the least of Redfall's problems.

I'm not sure if anyone here is planning to do this, but can we please all collectively agree to not send hate to these people over this review? Some of the comments on that tweet are quite nasty, i hope none of you are participating in that. It's okay to criticize but let's just all stay respectful and polite, okay?
Thank you, this should be common sense.
In this very thread someone has already called for others to mock them. And some do it in a cheeky way. And the Yeahs on these comments are just as bad imo.

I'm sorry for getting a bit passionate, but I'm getting pissed of at these reactions when someone's opinion doesn't align with a certain majority.
Grow up people, please. If a review doesn't agree with you (even before most of you even played the frikking game), if you get offended by it in any way, step out of the thread, step away from review threads in general. You're part of the problem. Scratch that, you ARE the problem. The low score isn't. It's explained and constructive.

Don't harass the person, ever, for sure. When a website gives a review that is consistent with their other reviews, fine. When a site gives a calculator app a 4/5 and quotes it as "being 60fps" and using words like "probably", it isn't a serious site and they are giving scores to troll and get clicks. It isn't an opinion. It's an intentional attention getter.

it was. i remember there was outrage about that one point lmao. TOTK might still fall to 95 although its not very likely after the first day has passed.
