News Pokémon Stadium will release on Nintendo Switch Online on April 12

look I played this a ton as a kid and literally didn’t know I could put game boy Pokémon in it

maybe they’ll add the feature someday, maybe they won’t

So the video is unavailable now, maybe it was aired sooner than expected?

Japanese trailer and blog post are still up; as are other regional uploads. No clue why NoA took down their verison.

The minigames are the only reason to play Stadium 1 & 2 without Transfer Pak support. The single player cup mode is literally unbeatable with the rental Pokemon.

Rented stadium 2 a ton as a kid, never had a transfer pak, but had fun dicking around with the rentals and playing the minigames.

Yep, this game is permanently connected with Blockbuster in my brain. I remember having fun with it! Is Articuno extremely good in it? I remember using it a lot.

I miss Pokémon. I got a little Poké’d out years ago and decided to take a break, came back with the Diamond remake which…maybe wasn’t the best decision lol. I will definitely load this up for a bit.

Beating it with rental pokemon isn't so much as a problem as that there isn't much of a reason to do it. Like, every single cool thing to unlock/earn involves using a Gameboy game.

If a game isn't fun to play for funs sake, and you're only doing it to grind out something else minor in a completely different game, that sounds like a major problem to me to begin with.

Rental Pokémon definitely aren't great though, good luck to anyone who actually does try and beat R2 with them.

People asked for difficulty in Pokémon games, there you have it, beating Stadium with rentals is hell.

There is something special in this for me because curiously, I never transfered Pokémon to Stadium because I got the game pre owned and it didn't come with the transfer pack lol I played exclusively with rentals and it was hard as hell, I never managed to beat R2.

Nowdays it's going to be a fun ride, working with the limited movrsets from the rentals is almost like a Battle Frontier challenge. Some Pokémon are pretty good, I remember Starmie and Articuno being staples in my team on the Prime Cup.

Honest to god I think people here would be surprised by how there are quite a lot of people who didn't grow up with the transfer pak. (especially if you got it used)

I’m gonna need to know what’s the GOAT rental team to beat the gym leaders

Articuno is probably the strongest rental Pokémon in the game, it can sweep quite a few leaders and E4. Lapras is also good, but everything it does, Articuno does better.

Zapdos is also good, but I think I used to prefer Jolteon because it's the fastest Pokémon in the game iirc and it also got a better moveset. Maybe Electrode was faster than Jolteon, he could also be an option. Explosion was good for taking down the enemy when you're almost dying since it always goes first.

Starmie is another great one, it's one of the fastest Pokémon and has a great moveset, if I'm not mistaken it has Surf, Thunderbolt and Psybeam. Was a staple in my team.

Snorlax is a great, bulky pick. Dragons were very powerful in gen 1 but I think Dragonite was kinda shit, maybe Dragonair was good.

And finally, psychic type was completely OP on gen 1, so abuse those. Slowbro, Alakazam and Exeggutor are probably the best ones, Exeggutor is pretty bulky and has some more coverage, I would pick two out of those three and balance them out with the rest of the team.

People act like the Stadium games are outright unenjoyable without the transfer pak, yet there's still so much to do and enjoy in this game with all the cups, trophies and R2: it's ball crushing hard and the biggest problem IMO is that the animations are dumb and you can't skip or speed them up (even if they miss). I made it to the E4 on rentals as a kid and this time I pledge to finally beat it once and for all!

Honest to god I think people here would be surprised by how there are quite a lot of people who didn't grow up with the transfer pak. (especially if you got it used) I had the mainline games but didn't even know what the transfer pak they referred to was, so I just assumed rentals were part of the game. It wasn't until 2007ish I found one and realized that "oh, that's what they meant". Of the 3D pokemon sims, I find Battle Revolution to be the only one actually inexcusable without transferring, since there's next to no rentals in that game whatsoever!

Stadium 2 is more exciting and it's a bummer to see that not release with this though. Moreso the fact that this means we'll likely alternate between GBA and N64 monthly which is sooooooo sloooooowww :(
This. I bought it cardridge only, no transfer pak.
I played sooooo many hours playing against my friends.
As a kid I always assumed the transfer pak was just a neat bonus, not the main appeal of the game, since I didn't have it and didn't care.

I’ll definitely look into these.

imo if Pokémon GB games should show up they should just leave save states and rewind because those games are so exploitable to begin with, they're so badly coded at times, I somewhat don't get why they even bothered to do transfer support for the 3DS VC versions considering the abuse possible to begin with

One day Game Freak will realize Pokémon Red and Blue are 30 year old, black and white game boy games with a total size of approximately 256kb that everyone has already played dozens of times.

But that day is not today.

Didn't stop them being by far the best selling games in the 3DS eshop, despite being at an inflated price and coming super late to the store. They know exactly how valuable in monetary terms that software is, to the detriment of the player base.

Yeah, we are part of the problem just like with everything Pokémon, but that also happened because of artificial demand they created by never rereleasing the games for 20 years despite most other big GB titles having had several rereleases by then. They are doing it again letting the hype build so people will be so desperate they will be willing to abide by whatever stupid terms GF imposes on them despite there being no reason why they shouldn't just be on NSO like all other GB games.

Surprised at how many people seem to dislike playing the Stadium games with rentals only - to me it's half the fun!

In Stadium 2 I actually remember using pokemon like Staryu (recover + surf + good speed), Voltorb (speed + boom) and Fearow (drill peck + double edge + good speed) to beat certain gyms.

It's certainly more challenging than bringing your own team from Red/Blue/Gold/Silver, but that's how I grew up playing the games and I enjoy being forced to make the unconventional Pokemon work. They essentially give most of the good pokemon bad movesets and force you to compromise in some way and find a solution that works.

They were $8, I don't think that's an inflated price lol.

EDIT: Double checked because my memory isn't reliable, and looks like they may have actually been $10, which doesn't really change what I said.

Incredible (and sad) how lively these battles look compared to current 3D games lol.
It's also true that the Stadium games are ONLY battles, they can afford to be as slow and wildly animated as they want. Both the resources and play time are all poured into the battles.

You know that those N64 models and animations were reused all the way up until Pokémon Battle Revolution on the Wii in 2006 right?

This is also the second Pokémon Stadium release on N64 (after the Japanese Pokémon Stadium 1; which had a pitiful 50 or so Pokémon that the sequel, which is our Pokémon Stadium 1, reuses all its models and animations from). It took 4 years of development and three separate retail games just to get the models & animations done for the first 251 Pokémon… and that’s JUST for battles and battles alone! No overworld map or animations or anything!

This level of production is NOT scalable for a full 3D Pokémon RPG, unless you want Game Freak to spend about 20 years making a single game.

Sure, if you cheese the RNG with Freezes, OHKO moves, crits, flinches and Thunder; there's like a 1 in 50,000 chance that it's possible... if you play for 20 hours straight and also happen to be one of the best speedrunners in the world.

For a normal human being? No. For all intents and purposes, it's impossible to beat without Transfer Pak support.

They were literally double (for the GBC games, even more for the game boy games) the price of every single other virtual console game for the same platform.

do you actually believe that's what a 20 hour RTA run does

The guy in that video literally did what I suggested in my previous post. He spammed OHKO moves and won with cheeky Freezes, crits and RNGesus on his side.

He's not even playing the game at this point, he's just rolling the dice and hoping for a lucky win. Which is the only way you can possibly win with rental Pokemon. They're just not equipped for the job when you're up against Round 2 Hacked Pokemon with illegal movesets & stat spreads... and that's by design. You're not supposed to be able to win without using the Transfer Pak.

Not a world class speedrunner though.

TBH I’m convinced they’re never coming, not unless Nintendo figures out how to disable rewind, save states, and cloud backup for JUST the Pokémon games. TPC, from what I gather, has some weird sanctimonious “purity” rules regarding the Pokémon experience that is detrimental to the players, like disabling cloud backup to prevent Pokémon duping. They do not align with NSO’s QOL features.
That's easy. Just make a dedicated app to Pokemon games. Then they could make whatever special treatment they want to, including making the GB games being Pack-exclusive or being purchasable if they want to.

Not mention they could support these features by overwriting the cloud save and all save states after the transaction. Of course, if they didn't even get cloud saves working for new games, they won't bother here either.

This is how I expect classic Pokémon games to show up, if they ever do. I also doubt you'll be getting them within the NSO subscription fee. If we're lucky, they might roll it in to the Pokémon home subscription, but they may well just tell everyone to suck it up and pay another fee.

I'm with you. Doing Gym Leader Castle runs with rentals is great. Can't wait for the release, I love Pokémon Stadium!

I don't know about Stadium 2 because I never played that, but Stadium 1 is definitely doable as I did it as a kid. I only didn't managed to beat R2, but I think as an adult I should be able to do it as well.

The gym leaders are pretty easy honestly, the problem is the E4 because you have to beat them in one go. Besides good strategy and some creativity with the team, it requires some luck as well, but it's not impossible.

Not so fun story. I made it to the E4 once and saved my game. I felt like I had finally broken through and this was going to be it. My cousin came over one day and asked to play the game. I didn't notice at first but he started to play my save file and was KO'd 3-0 almost instantly. That was it. No save for me to try again. No second chances. It was all over. I stood there frozen, unsure if I should cry, hit him, or just give up video games forever. It took every ounce of energy in me to keep my brave face on.

I never made it back to the E4 again.

Are you sure you have to beat everything in one go? In my head, you can save the game after each gym leader and you can retry as many times as you like, only the E4 has to be beaten in one go.

Either way, this release will have save states so that should make the game much more approachable with rentals.

I don't remember exactly how saves worked, but I know that whatever he did, my save was gone after that battle.

We can't be alternating GBA and N64. That can't be what's going on here...right?

Ugh...
It might be happening, yes, and it's something I thought could be on the cards before GBA was added.

That being said, Nintendo can be erratic with NSO and I think we'll need to wait a few months before it's clear if they're settling into a particular pattern, or if they're going to schedule updates in a less predictable way.

When the game comes out you should try it and then randomly call your cousin to confront him if he purposefully deleted your save in Pokémon Stadium lol

Prime ThaBeast is literally one of the greatest Mario players of all time.

Oh, neat. I didn't realize Pokémon Stadium was a Mario game.

/s

Sorry for the snark. I was aware he did Mario runs, but that is so very different than Stadium I didn't see a need to mention it.

This whole conversation triggered a memory that I successfully suppressed over 20 years ago. I might call him tonight lol.

Count me as another person who played mostly with rentals as a kid and loved it. I actually didn’t own a Game Boy at the time so Stadium was my first Pokémon game, and eventually I got Red Version (without a Game Boy, so I played it on my N64 via Stadium), but despite that I loved playing with rental Pokémon. And, honestly, as an adult with extreme executive dysfunction today, I kinda wish rental Pokémon was more of a thing in modern Pokémon games, too. It’s nice not having to worry about all the prep and decision making that comes with having to build a Pokémon team and just pick a team of rentals that makes the whole process much faster and easier. If the selection of rental Pokémon available are balanced right, it would be a fantastic feature to have.

That said, I’d still like to see Transfer Pak supported, even if I may not ever bother to use it myself.
