News GB/GBC games coming to Nintendo Switch Online, GBA games coming to NSO Expansion Pack (out now!)

What is "Reproduce Classic Feel" on the Game Boy NSO app?

EDIT: messing around with it and I think the main thing it does is darken the screen to shit, lmao

It's an LCD grid filter to mimic the original screens.

Getting both apps in one day was a really nice surprise. We all kind of figured that GB/GBC was an eventuality, but getting GBA games on the same day is really awesome. The starting libraries are really small for starters, but hopefully we get a steady pipeline of updates.

Kids today no idea the pains that we went through playing Pokemon in a dark car at night when we were growing up!

Man, this had me shouting during the Direct- what a great opening selection for both, extremely happy to have the GameBoy OG right now haha

Man, Alone in the Dark on GBC is pure sorcery. How did this even happen? Very close to the real deal in terms of gameplay.

Thanks THQ Nordic, can we have the real "real deal" HD remastered on Switch, please?

The filters are quite good. GBA looks a bit washed out to me, but looks great overall.

I still can't stand those fucking borders, but that's a lost battle.

Awesome to finally have these, but am I alone in thinking this is a really bizarre lineup? No Super Mario Land, Wario Land 1 and 2 got skipped for 3, no Donkey Kong, Super Mario Advance 4 over the first three, etc.

Oracle games are coming though, that makes me very happy.

Ehh, starting with Super Mario Land 2 is definitely the right call. The original Super Mario Land is…well, it was technically a Mario game you could play on the go.

I’m sure they will add more games over time, which will sort of eliminate some of that weirdness. Wario Land 1 and 2 will probably follow Super Mario Land 2. They’ll hopefully add the other Game & Watch Gallery games (I think they just wanted to start with 3 because it was a GBC game in all regions?). They’ll probably eventually even add the original Super Mario Land for completeness’s sake, which is the only reason anyone should play it.

The library could be better. DK ‘94 is a huge missed opportunity. But I think they’ll add to it over time.

Oh, I totally get why they did it from a quality perspective. Land is rough, to put it lightly. But it's still kinda weird to see them jumping all over the place like this.

I'm going to say there's a 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999% chance an announcement of the mainline Pokemon games and Pokemon Stadium Transfer Pak functionality during the Pokemon Day Pokemon Presents.
And then people will complain when it is inevitably announced that they can’t use the rewind functionality and save states. But I can see this happening for sure. Would be nice to have an official rerelease of Emerald and FR/LG if those come too.

I sorted the GB games by release date. There is a six year gap between Super Mario Land 2 and Zelda: Link's Awakening.

Nintendo, you gotta fill that gap!

Super Mario Advance 4 was chosen first because it's the one game in that series with a ton of unique content for the GBA. It would have sucked if they only did, like, 1 and then spoonfed us the rest for years until we hit 4 lol

And it's pure sorcery that they were able to work out a deal for it. What a super bizarre pull.

Alright, time to finally play Super Mario Land 2 and Wario Land 3 for the first time.

Even if Re-Prime and EO Trilogy were my top announcements of the show, this definitely was so great to see.

The other great thing? Oracles and Minish Cap on the NSO means the likelihood of them being on the docket for remakes is much lesser now! These games are great as is, and it hopefully means a new 2D Zelda will be brand new!

Releasing this so late in the switch lifecycle bodes well for Nintendo keeping online consistent for platforms moving forward.

Before today, I felt like those remakes already were farther down the road, but yea, today makes me more excited that the next 2D Zelda is a new adventure!

Feels surreal to play Metroid II on my TV in color again. Like I knew Game Boy NSO was rumored forever and it was obvious it would happen, but I didn’t fully make the connection this was possible.

Very cool Metroid 1-5 will all inevitably come to Switch now. Hopefully we get Prime 1-4 ultimately as well.

Interesting that there's seemingly no way to disable the color-correction.
I'm for it, but I think a lot of folks would be used to how GBA games look on the AGS-101 / DS / emulation, so the way the games currently look on the service might be jarring.
The LCD grid filter is genuinely good, and I'm surprised neither M2 nor Capcom have anything like this in their GBA game collections.

An idea I saw elsewhere, the data transferring of the Oracle games and Golden Sun, will they still be a pain in the ass or will Nintendo make it easier?
Depending on how the netplay works, they could probably script a thing to leverage the link cable mode in Golden Sun if they wanted to.

Oracle games don't have that option, I think. They could probably still script something if sufficiently motivated to, but it seems less likely.

Super Mario Advance 4 has a rumble option in the menu. I’m the original this only worked for GameCube controllers when playing on GameCube Game Boy Player. On Switch if you toggle it on, the switch controller rumbles to let you know it’s working 😮

I don’t know where it’s used in the game, but nice that they support that feature here.

Edit: already posted. Oh well. Still nifty.

Considering the oracle codes are like 6 characters long, just take a snapshot with the Switch's built in photo taker.

I do hope they work something out for GS TLA. I basically keep a clean carry over save in both my TLA cartridge and on my emulator boxes to not bother with that 19 page code.

If you told me 12 hours ago that I would be fighting the urge to put down kurukuru kururin to go to bed, I would say "is that a video game"?

I'm uh...gonna hold off until far more games are added for GBA.

Now if they can just release the all 5 GBA games. So I can finally legally play them :>

Yeah I tried it in Superstar Saga, it works great!

I've dropped about an hour into Superstar Saga again and I'm so happy this got shadowdropped, it's such a joyful game right from the word go. Easily my favourite Mario RPG.

I just hope that Tomato Adventure comes to this down the track too, even if it is only on the Japanese app.

Super Game Boy borders are still only 4:3. You'd still have the NSO border outside of them.
4:3 border and pure black to the left and right, as I've enabled on other emulators in the past.

Game & Watch Gallery 3 has a gorgeous border so hopefully this can be added in eventually. There really is no need to have the left and right gradient border when playing solo.

Are there any sizing options available for (2x, 3x, etc.)? I suppose I'll find out soon enough!

I wish the original B&W Zelda was included too. I have never cared for the extra dungeon nor the additional item that makes the game a bit too easy. And they'll be superfluous Game Boy Printer stuff in the game (allow printing to a screenshot?) Instead I enjoyed making a custom palette (greeny-browns) on my Super Game Boy. The colours of DX are nice though. 😍

Ooooh I can't wait to play around with all this after work.

It'd be cool if they brought over Game Boy Gallery, a European exclusive I spent many hours playing as a child and predates the first Game & Watch Gallery title.

Played and beat the Mario game on the gameboy service in one sitting. It’s a fun game didn't overstay it’s welcome for what it was doing and if I got it when it originally came out I’d have loved to have a 1-2 hour Mario game on the go (with a screen j couldn’t see in the dark).

Now I move onto Mario & Luigi

Can we talk about Tilt n' Tumble?
That was a pretty cool announcement. Almost certainly means WarioWare Twisted and Yoshi Topsy Turvy will be coming. Hear me out on this Nintendo and Konami: Boktai with the right joycon IR sensor somehow working for the sunlight functionality (also, give us Ninja 5-0).

Just had to give SML2 a play-through before bed. Such a great, quick little game. This and Tetris were the only games I had for a long time when I was young, and there was a significant streak where I was playing through this game every single night. Maybe that’s why I love speedrunning so much now, lol.

Anyway, I’m really looking forward to jumping into the GBA titles once I’m finished with the Prime Remaster.

Wow, saying that feels crazy. What a great day this was.

Are there any possible consoles to be added for NSO? It feels like the console choices are already enough but who knows? For Nintendo's end, wonder if there could be GC or even DS ones. For SEGA, maybe Game Gear/Master System?

Thank you for reading.

GCN game file sizes are way too big for an NSO setup. They’ll most likely just keep selling remasters.

Yeah the Gamecube NSO dream is more or less dead. Especially the fact we got a Gamecube remaster in the same direct lol.

Just beat Kirby's dreamland. What a GOAT game. Simple and to the point.

Gameboy and GBA games absolutely trounce their NES and SNES counterparts. These are actually really good games, despite the small library.
