News Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe new info (New Copy Ability, all returning Sub-Games and more)

What makes this game so beloved? I know folks round here are not the biggest fan of referring to Metascore, but it can be a useful summary of critical reception and the original release only got a 77 (seemingly the lowest-rated Kirby game on Wii, unless I missed one). Was it less well-received on release, but became more popular later? Something like that?

Honestly I don't get the impression it's held that loftily, but it's easy to retroactively see it started the template that extends through modern Kirby games and it does feel like it benefits a bit in association to Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot.

It's essentially the start of "modern Kirby" introducing the collectable system and trend of having a new gimmick for each entry that every mainline Kirby game has been using since

It's a fine game, but Triple Deluxe and especially Robobot are better and more refined entries that improved upon what RtD brought to the table. They have tighter level design and better bosses since those games aren't limited by having to design everything for multiplayer

Like I said on the previous page:

It's pretty high up on the list of fan favourites (likely why they chose to remaster it as the last anniversary game); definitely the best game they could've chosen to revisit it they weren't going to touch the 3DS ones.

In Japan especially Magolor is perhaps the most popular Kirby character outside of the main four (Kirby, Dedede, Meta Knight, Waddle Dee); and Return to Dream Land itself seems to be held in high regard seeing as it was the highest placing Kirby game on Famitsu's Top 100 console game poll (only other two to place were Super Star and Air Ride).

In the English speaking fandom I see more dersion towards it over the multiplayer focus, Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot arguably being more focused and tightly designed as single player experiences (I agree but that's besides the point), but it still has plenty of fans regardless. It was the start of the "modern" style of 2D Kirby from here to Star Allies, after a decade of development struggles at HAL, and it is a very fine start at that.

This is one of these series where I definitely wouldn't pay much mind to critic conglomerate scores though; I think games focused on a lower difficulty level or casual audience are regularly marked down by critics for being what they are made to be.
 
A shame Scope Shot won’t be in this, it was quite fun to shoot off pieces of the enemy mechs.
my initial guess was that they didn't want to port it to a system where they'd have to settle for gyro pointer, but then they're doing a new version of kirby on the draw anyway so there was no reason why they couldn't have

but they kind of made the right choice because now we get to see waddle dee in a 10 gallon hat

Is the soundtrack going to be re-arranged or something? I would like to start listening to check out how I vibe with the music since we are a month before launch. Still waiting for the Forgotten Land OST to release! :)

The music seems to be remastered with higher quality samples, but its close enough to the original soundtrack that you'd be fine giving that a listen.

I never refer to metascore when it's about Kirby because most reviewers are always treating the game like "oh it's too easy it's for kids" and doesn't seem to understand the chill nature of Kirby games. They just conveniently forget that Kirby is always meant to be an accessible game for everyone from the start.

It's beloved for being the first console Kirby mainline game since Kirby 64 (there was really nothing in between for 11 years aside from Air Ride as a spinoff), and it did pretty much everything right, if anything it doesn't try a lot of things, but it serves as a good introduction to Kirby, and it's just chill and fun to play anyway especially with the abilities all having a bigger moveset.
It's also my first real Kirby game that made me understand what Kirby was truly about.

If anything what I wonder about is like, what's happening to the post game in this new version as it is definitely the thing that kinda pales in comparison even to the 3DS sequels, but clearly this Deluxe version does a lot of things right, especially 60 FPS finally.

This became even more apparent after Star Allies came out, a game that was actually designed around 4 player coop, and how different the level design of it feels to RtDL /TD/PR.

As for why I hold RtDL in such high regard? In a lot of ways it's because it feels like the first true successor to Super Star, which in for a long time had been my top game in the series. Kirby games are why I'm glad I'm not a professional critic, because I totally get the "ObJeCtIvE" argument for why most Kirby games are a 7-8/10. When I'm playing them though Kirby games are always some of the most fun I have in gaming for how chill and relaxed they are. They're also excellent games to play with friends and family and I look forward to introducing multiplayer Kirby to my nephew in a year or so when he's able to really grasp playing games with a controller.

That's not even a hot take, that's literally how the game was designed, specifically to avoid the problems of the previous canned Kirby games. Read the Iwata Asks about it, they outright say that.

I think I've read the Iwata Asks on RtDL before and "knew" that, but I'll blame my boomer brain on forgetting it 🫠

I mean I won't pay $60 for this but it looks like fun so I'll probably wait until a decent price cut. Too many games coming out that it's not really a priority game for me unfortunately.

I'm not getting it day 1 (I still need to get Forgotten Lands 🫠), but the moment my nephew or my friends daughter gets a bit older and can handle playing games with a controller I'll be grabbing it asap and playing it with them.

Looks great. However, this releases the same day as Octopath Traveler II, so Kirby will have to wait if I do buy this game.

Off hand, Kirby's Adventure hit on NES in 1993 when the SNES was out in 1991, Super Star was in 96 near N64 with Dreamland 3 coming out in 97 despite the SNES being effectively dead, Crystal Shards on N64 released near the PS2 launch, Robobot came near the end of the 3ds relevant life span, and despite that they still pumped out more Kirby spin off titles near and after the Switch came out if I recall.

Varying degrees, but Kirby is notorious for getting the end of life or even post life shaft.

Also, Mass Attack was one of the final DS games and Extra Epic Yarn was one of the last 3DS games

Yep, it's almost like it's mandated in Kirby's contract somewhere that he has to release into entirely irrelevant slots. I suppose at least when it comes to stuff like Mass Attack, you could still play that on the 3DS, but most of the time the replacement system was not BC, so it was pretty unfortunate. I do expect the next Switch to be fully BC, but I'm not convinced there will be cross gen enhancements, so they could maybe make the situation work a bit better this time depending, I just don't think Nintendo is quite equipped for it. I think I also recall Return to Dreamland on Wii released around the time the system had been running out of steam, where as Epic Yarn got a more primetime release timeframe, at least this remaster will still be coming out during a time where interest is strong on Switch, and in an era where interest in Kirby is likely at an all time high.

This is a cool find and has me significantly more excited for this rerelease. These types of additions are what get me to replay games. I wish the screenshots were a bit clearer, but I imagine we'll learn more soon enough, either via a Twitter drop or a Direct as you suggest.

I replayed RTDL last year on Wii so I was fine skipping the remake if it was just minigames and 2 new copy abilities.

But this... this changes things

I haven't played RTDL since release, so I'm definitely down to experience it again, but how substantial this new mode is will really be the difference between buying at launch or waiting for a sale.

Could this be like Dedede Tour / Meta Knightmare but with playable Magalor instead?
Hoping this replaces EX mode from the original. Having to replay the whole game again to unlock True Arena sucked in the OG

I love remakes that add a nice amount of extra content.
Best magical boi getting his own mode checks out. Bring on the (hopefully) new tunes and expanded lore!
