Finally finished Nier Automata.

Of all the games I’ve ever played, it’s one of the most idiosyncratic, and that is both its greatest strength and its greatest weakness.
At times I was blown away by the way it played with and deconstructed gaming archetypes; at others, it drove me mad by insisting on doing things differently even when that meant being incredibly inconvenient.

I cannot understate the quality of the port; despite being a conversion from the PS4, it looks and runs well enough that it could pass for a game built for the Switch.

At the end of the day, while there were times I almost rage quit in frustration, I am glad I stuck with it; in an industry that is increasingly homogenous, its uniqueness is a precious thing.
It’s a little too rough around the edges for me to consider it truly great, but I’m glad it exists. To paraphrase one of Roger Ebert’s film reviews, this is one that got away, but it was fun trying to reel it in.
Out of curiosity, what parts infuriated you?

Your post gave me an excuse to talk about something I've been thinking about a lot lately. I've recently been thinking about my PS4 library, probably because I got a PS5. I put my PS4 games on the shelf in a more organized but still not organized fashion, and what I realized was "damn, that's a good set of games". Which is hilarious, because I always kind of thought of the PS4 as a console that kind of disappointed me greatly. Everything from 2017 onwards was pretty good, but even then the amount of absolute classics was pretty low for me. Nier Automata is a good example: It's probably one of my favorite games of all time, but like, "top 50" favorites, pretty low on the list, because while it's absolutely great it has so many flaws. And that's how all the best games on the system were, too. That's not even getting into the other stuff, a lot of series really kind of disappointed me on the platform or weren't my thing. But looking at the library in retrospect? It really is pretty good, but it took YEARS to get there. Hope this doesn't come off as trolling because it's Playstation, it's just something I've been thinking about recently. Ironically I might end up liking the library more now that I have a PS5 and care more about clearing my backlog than I did back then ...

Too bad my PS5 disc drive was broken the first time I tried it ( :

🚨 Nintendo music video starts filming on Thursday 🚨 (wish me luck!!)

It’s been a long road but we’re almost there. The song has been done since the beginning of November. It just needs a music video now.

My IRL friend is a college film student and he is doing all of the cinematography for the video, as well as co-directing it with me! He and I used to film stupid little skits all the time, back in 2017/18. Most were not released publicly; we’d just spend an afternoon making videos to make ourselves laugh.

But we’ve both been so busy with our postsecondary educations and jobs that we haven’t been able to make a video together for years, despite remaining close friends. So it’s SUPER cool to me that after 5 years, we’re working on a project that is WAAAY bigger than anything we’ve done before.

My Nintendo song will release in February, along with its music video. I am so INCREDIBLY excited to share it with you. By the time it releases, I will have been working on it for nearly nine months.

This is my passion project and something I care very deeply about. I really hope that when it releases, you’ll give the video a watch. It was largely inspired by the community here on Famiboards, so I want you all to be some of the first to see it!

(Plus, I may have gotten some help from familiar users on Famiboards, so check the credits in description upon release!)

Currently playing Tales of Arise, so Bamco should announce a Switch port any minute now.
Playing ToA as well (again!); I dropped it last time at around the story's halfway point, as far as I can tell. I'll try to push through this time around. If I get more attached to its story and characters, that is. I'm still not sure if me dropping the game before was more due to my own mood or caused by the lackluster writing. Presentation and gameplay certainly are (still) to my liking.

So far not enjoying God of War: Ragnarock nearly as much as the first game

Like it’s fine but, I was so sucked into the first game when I played it I didn’t want to stop. Just kept going till I beat it and got as many secrets and stuff as I could

This time I’m just kind of bored and my mind is drifting and I’m not really engaged at all

I feel like I have to play this at some point just due to how batshit you’re making it sound
If you love Chrono Trigger and Cross, I think Radical Dreamers is a must play. There’s so many ideas it plays with that tie around ideas from both games and the main path is pretty cool as is. The goofy alternate endings are indeed wild, especially the bunny one.

Oh no yeah I just need an office chair, I intentionally stay away from anything "gaming" branded.
I always wonder why so many "gaming" branded products (chairs, laptops, headsets, you name it) are so horribly designed with all the extra logos, accent colours (green for instance, but red most prominently) and other fluff like LEDs.
It's a good way to make your products look edgy and hip, I guess? Offputting is what I'd call it, but I'm obviously not really part of the main target group.

Quite enjoying the game so far, and I think I should be at about the halfway point by now. My only gripe is that during more intense battles with lots of effects going off simultaneously, it can be very hard to see and understand what is going on and react appropriately, especially once you unlock your full party.

My post after that explains the main bottleneck.
Also just stuff like the map being awful, route B having so much repetition, the side quests being nearly entirely tedious backtracking, etc.
The combat, visuals, music, variety, and creativity were terrific, but for me the game as a whole was a wildly mixed bag.
Still, it was a journey worth taking, even if there were times it made me want to throw my controller out the window.

“Gamer” means it has to look like something out of a 2000s-era sci fi movie where they were really excited about CGI.

Readability certainly isn't one of the battle system's strengths, no. Playing on hard and there definitely have been some frustrating instances of not really being able to tell what's going on and how to react. I do enjoy the flashiness of it all, though, not going to lie.

Yeah, I love the spectacle of it, but at the same time, it definitely is one of those games where after having played it myself, I have to admit I would not be able to play it on a 6 inch handheld screen.

I've actually been playing a good chunk of it on the Steam Deck. Admittedly a 7 inch display, heh. But it still works out well enough for me, honestly. My bar in terms of performing in-game/in battle is pretty low, though -- as long as I don't die in any of the current fights, I'm good. I really don't care for achieving more than that. Still leads to some frustration, as said before, but it luckily doesn't ruin the experience overall.

I can see it being a me problem, tbh. I also struggled trying to play games like Astral Chain in handheld, so I played it docked instead.

Yeah, I've played AC handheld for like 90% of the game as well. :D

It's weirdly enough different with Bayonetta for me; can't seem to handle that one undocked all too well myself, huh. Too busy and hectic. There's a, albeit fine, line between ARPGs and pure (character) Action there for me.

The screen protector on my Switch has had a chip in it for some time. Well yesterday the chip has grown to a long Crack going across the screen. It's a tempered glass BTW. Need to get a new one. Will I need anything special to clean any residue off the screen once I remove the old screen protector? Also any tips for getting the current one off without damage.

Good news! My Switch is being repaired and I didn't need to pay anything due to warranty.

Bad news :( My Splatoon 2 and Legends Arceus saves are gonna be gone forever.

So both thank you, and fuck you, Nintendo!

Did you scream “fuck you” at your screen?

I lost all my emulation saves recently so I can understand your feeling
Yep, it sucks. However, it's not the worst saves to lose. At least Splatoon 3 is out so, outside of going back to play SP stuff, I've got no need to play 2 again. Arceus hurts more cause I never finished it, but it'd be nice to start again maybe.

Honestly I'm more worried about my screenshots and videos. Those go all the way back to BotW on launch day, and it would really suck to lose them. However that's my fault for not removing the SD card before I sent it out.

I admit, the temptation to get fire emblem is still there but I am still concerned with how bad my migraines have been till those injections work.

But…fire emblem…

Well there it is. All paths in Radical Dreamers complete.

I can't believe I did all that.
I'm always trying to get more people to sign up for Famiboards. The more the merrier, after all, and even thought Christmas is over, I'm still in that holly jolly spirit. Well, these people ask me to tell them who the best gamer on Famiboards is, as they don't want to join a forum that doesn't have true gamers on it. And I tell them, I always tell them, the answer is Chocolate_Supra. Thank you for proving me right yet again. Honestly, it's a bit boring being right literally all of the time.

This is a shout out to those who say "fuck it, it's wednesday. It's weekend, I need snacks, booze an games!". I feel you and I'm with you!

I watched a Gamers Nexus video where they said that, at least for gaming chairs, basically all the brands use the same chair from the same manufacturer. The logos and extraneous branding are the only additions they make. That kinda explains why they go so ham on it - gotta differentiate themselves somehow lol

Step 1. Go to regular orchestra

Step 2: Set them on fire

There you go!

I'm sorry I had to say something dumb because I have just been awed by intelligence and I had to unwind my brain

I still have two hours until lunch, and all I'm thinking about is my coveted after work nap.

I wonder if this is the case with other products as well, like headphones. Gaming laptops on the other hand do look different enough, I'd say, and are certainly made by a variety of OEMs. Guess in their case it's a "gotta fit the gamer aesthetic" or something along those lines. Or maybe they want their brands to be associated with certain colours for easier recognition, like it's become the case with console makers pretty much being tied to blue, green, and red by now.
In any case, it too often drags down the overall design in my eyes, and makes the products in question look super cheap most of the time. I'd rather they kept it simple/minimalist.

Yeah, the laptop market is very crowded so I imagine any kind of aesthetic differentiation is only seen as a good thing

In terms of brands being associated with colors, though: the only one that springs to mind is Razer (green), and their laptop designs are fairly understated as far as gaming laptops go

@HockeyBird also sorry for leaving it off the previous list but it literally just got confirmed for crunchyroll, is one of my most anticipated and starts tomorrow:

It’s a fun and wild and pretty Yuri one

Kicks off with the MC’s flying experiment failing, her crashing her brothers party where he’s annulling his engagement and kidnapping his exfiance to be her assistant

I read the manga of this up to the most current chapter I could find. This is an amazing Yuri. I had a lot of fun reading it.

Edit: I just realized this is not the anime ST. Hopefully this isn't too off topic...

I feel many people will be setting themselves up for disappointment when it comes to the switch 2 as I doubt that it will be as up to date as many wish and would still be underpowered compared to the ps5 and xbox series'.

We have a good ballpark of specs thanks to the Nvidia leak, >PS4/XBO before DLSS. It being less powerful than huge stationary consoles is a moot point.

My point is that many say that games look terrible for today's standards, for example Xenoblade 3. I just think that they won't be looking as good as they are hoping.

Speaking of Namco recently, they usually port stuff 1-2 years later for the switch. I wonder if scarlet nexus or arise will ever get announced, they are both unreal 4 games. I tried the Arise demo and I could get it to run great on my laptop, even at 30 fps (new laptop with a ryzen gpu) and the artifacts were insane to the point I started seeing 0s and 1s lol.

Some people were calling the Switch outdated and underpowered back in 2017, so yeah, some people will be disappointed with the Switch 2 specs and its performance no matter what, especially those who want current home console-like horsepower.

Still, I think at this point most people understand the concessions that must be made in order to develop a portable system and expect something relatively reasonable: a console powerful enough to get native versions of demanding PS4/Xbox One games with little issue that can can also get a few PS5/Series X ports. Anything else would be just a nice extra.

Then again, I may be absolutely wrong. I'm not very up to date with future hardware discussions, you see, because I understand so very little about it that as far as I'm concerned those discussions might as well be written in Esperanto.

The average Nintendo youtuber is reading this and thinking: "Great, now what the hell do I do with all these Sad Marios I just ordered?"

Holy shit adding inventory filter buttons took a total of 10 minutes. That was way too easy.

[INT. NINTENDO OFFICE - NIGHT]

FURUKAWA is in a dark office, lit only by a small lamp and the glow of his laptop screen. A meek, nervous intern walks into the room holding a piece of paper.

INTERN
Sir… we just got a fax from the UK office. We… we did it. We were #1 in the country. Pulled it off right at the finish line. Here.

The INTERN hands FURUKAWA the paper. FURUKAWA glances down at the paper, the glow of his laptop screen filling his glasses with a bright, white light that hides his expression.

FURUKAWA
Thank you. You’re dismissed. It’s late, go home for the evening. Keep the cab receipt, I’ll reimburse.

INTERN
Th-thank you, sir!

The INTERN leaves the office hurriedly. FURUKAWA looks back to his laptop screen. Camera moves to over his shoulder to reveal he’s staring at a spreadsheet. Punch-in on a line reading “SWITCH 2 RELEASE: HOLIDAY 2023.” Cut to FURUKAWA’s face, his natural frown raising into a small smirk. He cracks his knucles. Cut back to spreadsheet as he makes an edit:

SWITCH 2 RELEASE: HOLIDAY 2023_
