Hope Nintendo gets some recognition but realistically it's about GoW vs Elden Ring anyways. I'm like 55:45 in favor of GoW winning but it's tough. Would have said Elden Ring easily but GoW is going to be very fresh on people's minds.
I’ve seen this sentiment a lot, and I don’t really get it. The only GOTY that released in H2 was Dragon Age: Inquisition. Recency bias hasn’t really played a factor in the awards.

You guys really think they'll go from completely ignoring the Xenoblade series with 2 and DE to nominating them for GOTY? I'm sorry, but the best 3 will get is best RPG or best Soundtrack (if it even gets nominated at all).

As for my predictions, i'm thinking:
  • Elden Ring
  • God of War Ragnarok
  • Horizon Forbidden West
  • Gran Turismo 7 or Last of Us Part I
  • A Plague Tale Requiem
  • One of the BIG indie games (Immortality, Neon White, TMNT, Cuphead DLC, Tunic, Monkey Island, etc.). I know it's kinda cheating to predict just a category instead of an exact game, but I honestly don't know which to expect.
Yes, I know there isn't a single Nintendo game, but this is what I honestly expect, and I'm not even doomposting - I just don't think their output this year vibed well with the types of people that nominate games for this show.

XC2 was a much more controversial title, and XC:DE was a remaster/partial remake, which have never been in the running for GOTY. 2022 is a much weaker year and isn't burdened by either of those things. Doesn't really guarantee anything, but this year is by far its best chance to get recognition.

Gran Turismo 7 or Last of Us Part I
I don't believe a single racing game has ever been nominated for GOTY (including Forza Horizon 5 last year, which was the highest rated game of 2021), and as said above, The Last of Us Part I would have to buck a lot of trends to get a nomination. I wouldn't expect either of those.

Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7 remakes both got nominated so I don't see how that would been a problem for TLOU Part I.
As for Gran Turismo - I really DO believe it will get nominated, it's a massive and beloved franchise with a ton of history compared to Forza Horizon. GT7 is technically the first mainline entry since this new form of The Game Awards started in 2014 and it reviewed incredibly well, so it has everything going for it.

Because TLOU1 was a 1:1 remake whereas RE2R and FF7R were reimaginings of the original games.

Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake are in a different ballpark here. They can barely be considered as remakes in the first place. The Last of Us Part I will probably miss the nomination cutoff for the same reasons that Demon's Souls did, because a lot of critics won't really see it as a "new" game like they did for the aforementioned two.

I dunno how much history really plays a role in these shows either, considering how many "brand new" games have gotten nominations (and wins) in the past. Add in the pretty messy microtransaction controversy and the fairly muted fan response, and I'd be shocked if this was the game to break the racing genre into the mainstream awards, at least in regards to the Keighleys.

XC2 was always up against it by being a December release and being more 'controversial' in certain ways we're all aware of. 3 tones the controversy down, released at a much better time and is one of the best reviewed games in a fairly weak year. It absolutely has a shot at being nominated.

In fact, I'm pretty confident there's only one slot out of the six up in the air. If the first five aren't Elden Ring, God of War, Xeno 3, Bayo 3 and Horizon 2 then I'd be massively surprised.

I honestly don’t expect Ragnarok will win against Elden Ring. Elden Ring is a fresh approach to the Souls formula that resonated with people. Ragnarok, while by all accounts kicks its predecessor’s butt, is comparatively an iterative sequel.

That’s my stance as well. It’s very similar to the 2018 show, except ironically enough Ragnarok is filling the same role that RDR2 did, while Elden Ring is taking the place of GoW.

extremely easy bet: nintendo's nominee will be bayonetta 3, xeno 3 wont appear in any award except maybe best family game/best ost or best rpg (which will proceed to lose all three awards to mario and rabbids in anyway)

decent chance of happening mixed with a good dose of hopium: zelda has history with the tga, so it would make a lot of sense to show off a trailer of botw2 in there.

small chance of happening, big amounts of hopium: mp4 teaser.

I'm about half way through Ragnarok and while it's a superb game that does everything right, it's not Elden Ring. Nothing comes close this year IMO.

In the end, the awards are just a bit of pointless fun anyway. I love what Geoff has built, even if it's mostly just sponsored content and argument starters.

I can't tell you with 100% certainty what games are going to be nominated, but there's one thing I know for sure: I will go in expecting to see a Silksong-related reveal, and I will get absolutely nothing.

What will be the big indie game nominated for goty this year?
I would think the 2 most likely candidates are neon white and rogue legacy 2?
As far as Nintendo games nomination I think they'll nominate xeno 3 and not bayo 3, that's just a hunch but I don't see bayo 3 in the running for goty. For the rest well it's going to be the elden ring/ragnarok show but I expect Tears of a Kingdom to get a new trailer if it wins most anticipated game, if they don't have a trailer I guess they'll just give it to starfield and show a trailer of that.

Not that I believe XB3 will be nominated for best family game but I will point to It Takes Two winning best family game despite it not being for children either.

Rogue Legacy 2 is good, but I've heard very little buzz about it in the press. I'd say Neon White, Tunic, or Immortality are much more likely picks.

I think there is a nonzero chance of a Tears of the Kingdom teaser.

Maybe very close to zero, but still, nonzero.

Based on infallible patterns of this happening every two years, I'm really hoping for the next Smash DLC reveal!🤞

Is Elden Ring an Action Adventure game or an RPG? I’ve seen it called both.
It kind of is both. I'd definitely call it an action adventure with RPG elements, myself, but it winning the RPG category would be peak Game Awards. And this is coming from someone who adores Elden Ring and it is my GOTY, and I think should win that award! But if it wins RPG I'll be a little salty when we have so many great other RPGs this year.

Tunic is the big indie nom for the year, bookmark this post y’all. Has that same impeccable level of polish as Hades and Celeste.

I think at least one Nintendo title makes it to the GOTY category and, as the two highest rated, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Bayonetta 3 are the frontrunners for that slot. Like a lot of other people, I really don't see either game winning that category. Tunic or Neon White could also easily pop up there.

We should see Nintendo dominate Family as usual - Kirby, Pokemon, Splatoon 3, Switch Sports and, from Ubisoft, Sparks of Hope. By all rights, Bayonetta 3 should be frontrunner for Action game of the year; Sparks of Hope might get a nod in the Strategy category; Xenoblade Chronicles 3 should be a contender and arguably frontrunner in the RPG category. Kirby really deserves a nomination in the Adventure category (that's where Psychonauts 2, another 3D platformer, turned up last year).

  • Elden ring
  • GOWR
  • Horizon FW
  • Xenoblade 3
  • Bayonetta 3
  • Neon White
Elden Ring will win it. it took over conversation for weeks and basically deleted other games coming out around the same time from conversations.
As for Xenoblade's chances, remember that 2 came out in december, so it was not elegible for that years awards+the series was still unknown at that time. Xenoblade 3 came out early enough and after the series gained some recognition, so its chanches are much higher. There is no bias against the series.
I hope it at least wins best Soundtrack.

I’ve thought far too long and hard on this, and here it is: My final prediction s.
  1. Elden Ring
  2. God of War Ragnarok
  3. Horizon: Forbidden West
  4. The Last of Us Part 1
  5. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  6. Tunic
I have a hard time picturing Bayonetta and Xenoblade garnering enough general support to make this list. Kirby was fairly widely enjoyed and is a better fit for the obligatory Nintendo nomination.

The Last of Us makes it due to a year that is overall lacking in AAA blockbuster successes, I think.

I’m going to go with Ragnarok winning because the story-based, narrative adventure with stunning visuals makes for a more approachable winner than Elden Ring. It will be tight though!

I’m wagering all of my Famicoins on this, by the way. I don’t think I can do that, but I want to.

so, for Switch so far we have got from this show

Zelda BOTW exclusive new footage (and release date back in the Wii U days? Don't remember)
A couple of third-party Smash Bros fighters
Bayonetta 1+2 and 3!
Bravely Default II
No more heroes 3

other meaningful contents?

good ol Cranky Kong playable in DKC Tropical Freeze

Does nomination have a measurable effect on sales
It'd be interesting to see if we could get data on this, but I imagine it doesn't lead to any significant surge, yet instead it helps with game legs with consumers thinking, "Well maybe I'll get around to it sometime." For a game as fairly niche as Xenoblade a nom couldn't hurt I suppose.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 was announced in 2018 at the TGA's.

March 2023 is still suspiciously empty for Nintendo, so if they do have something planned for then, the Game Awards would be a good time to reveal it.

But honestly, who knows with Nintendo. We may just end up with a new Zelda trailers...although I say that like it's a bad thing...

Wow, what a weak year.

Elden Ring is going to win this, which is fine, I guess. Not my type of game at all, but this year has been full of those types of games for me.

I think Sifu should actually get a GotY shout (and is the superior "super-hard combat-centered game," to boot), but my expectations are low.

Out of the likeliest nominees, Kirby is the only one that is anywhere near GotY-worthy, which 2021 DistractedByPixels would be shocked to learn.

Game of the Year

  • A Plague Tale: Requim
  • Elden Ring
  • God of War: Ragnarok
  • Horizon: Forbidden West
  • Stray
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Huh, color me surprised that they went with Xenoblade 3 over Bayonetta 3. Expected it to be snubbed again.

Not that it has any remote chance for winning.
