I kind of miss the handheld versions of games. When digital games were becoming a thing, I thought it would be a place for handheld developers to keep making games in that $30 to $40 range but that didn't really happen. Capcom could put out multiple brand new Mega Man games on the GBA and DS. It has made 1 on the current systems. We had Sonic Mania in 2017 but basically the 2D/handheld releases just disappeared.
Square has been pretty good in terms of RPGs that could fit into the mold, but most other publishers haven't really kept those going. Could have had multiple of the Konami and Capcom games. Nintendo is probably the worst offender. Could really make lots of those DS/3DS style releases and eshop games but have mostly focused on the bigger titles (with good reason based on sales).

I'd say Nintendo is still putting out "handheld" games but they ramped up the budget and scope of those titles to fit the $60 price tag. But other companies just stopped making those type of titles entirely. Sega, Capcom, Konami, all you use to thrive on consistent and regular handheld releases. I thought that type of mindset would transfer over to digital storefronts easily but instead of churning out consistent mid-budget titles, those teams were just moved to working on the big AAA releases. Heck, many of the handheld titles were outsourced and the publishers don't even do that.

Definitely agree with this. A number of their big hits on Switch implement plenty of handheld friendly design elements that really callback to things like Game Boy. There’s a big emphasis on micro-goals that make it easy to pop into the game, work towards something for 15 minutes, and then move onto the next one or put the system down. It makes for a very satisfying game loop but it’s something that I think hasn’t been present in their home system designs.

Maybe I shouldn't have started my next-gen experience with the Star Ocean Divine Force demo on Xbox Series S because it didn't seem that much different compared to the PS4 demo lol

okay, the era of you escaping things by gottaing to go fasty are OVER

no more running away

Switch's lifetime will be at least ten years.
Sorry all, I have been out of the loop. This whole Miyamoto and Switch 2 backwards compatability thing. Is it all being blown out of proportion or will Nintendo really not do backwards compatibility?
Miyamoto: backwards compatibility is easier than ever!

Articles working from machine translations: Nintendo discusses challenges in backwards compatibility

Fanboys: Nintendo would love to charge you $60 for your Switch games again

Time to do something I haven't done in 5.5 years...set up a new console
Ooooooohhhh whatcha get? New consoles are so much fun!

Series S, very nice! It’s an amazing indie and game pass machine.

I picked it up with the Target deal a few weeks back. Honestly it was an impulse buy since there's not really much I want to play on Xbox at the moment. I'm also in the midst of playing a bunch of Switch stuff like Persona 5 and probably starting Bayonetta 3 tomorrow. But I decided to hook up the Xbox today and give it a test run. I played the Star Ocean demo on PS4 the other day so I wanted to see how it felt on "next gen". When I go on Thanksgiving break, I think I'll probably due to $1 trial of Game Pass. Maybe try out Halo Infinite.

Forza Horizon 5 is a must-play

Not just blown out of proportion, but amazingly almost the opposite of what Miyamoto said and then blown out of proportion. 😅

He basically said that software is built in a way now that backwards compatibility will be simpler going forward, but Nintendo is still focused on creating unique experiences for new hardware. People skipped over the first half and took that last half to mean Nintendo wanted to only create new experiences on new hardware, and here we are.

Short answer:
Yes, join team decade.

Next step is to join team next-platform-isn't-going-to-be-a-switch
Like @Skittzo said (higher in this thread, not in the quote, which was when I decided to add the tag), it's a reference to when Furukawa said the Switch would have a ten-year lifespan. A lot of people have said he was BS'ing because Drake exists, but I've been a believer since the beginning that Drake might be positioned as "another member of the Nintendo Switch Family of Consoles™" and therefore not considered by Nintendo to be a generational break (even if many enthusiasts do due to the significant hardware jump), therefore Drake will stretch out the Switch's lifespan and fulfill the ten-year promise.

The bolded is par for the course whenever Nintendo does or doesn’t do anything. It’s like some people permanently are both pessimistic &/or uninformed about Nintendo.

I’m heading down the dangerous kit path of Hexa gear…. Mechs and waifus man, mechs and waifus.

Also finally diving into some more Xenoblade 3. May just force myself forward on the story after I finish the hero rank up missions.

Got 2 main games left on the physical sales: Live a Live and Kirby. Anything else I’m after is digital

I totally expect the next Switch model to be backwards compatible, no questions there. What I do not expect is Nintendo to actually go back and patch up/update the majority of their older releases from OG Switch hardware for the Drake. They'll certainly go back to some marquee titles, which still make for great system sellers in Drake's case (e.g. Mario Kart, Splatoon 3, the like), but I'm pretty sure they're going to continue releasing remasters/remakes (the former especially), in this case of OG Switch games, only then making use of Drake's potential. Sure, stuff like Xeno will automatically see a boost in resolution, while games with unlocked/unstable framerates will also automatically run better (Three Hopes, Bayo 3 for instance). But more fundamental design work will only happen when remastering/when making dedicated Drake versions of games, which I -- and that's the crucial point here -- still expect them to sell for full price, obviously.

Nintendo does a lot of silly/stupid things but the last thing I'd worry about is the Switch 2/Pro not being backwards compatible. It would be a disaster that would make the Xbox One launch look good. Too many people are all digital. Wii U to Switch and PS3 to PS4 were the last times that shit will be acceptable.

I do wonder when the Arkham games are coming to switch
It would be so fitting if the Arkham games were a stealth drop

I'd say Nintendo is still putting out "handheld" games but they ramped up the budget and scope of those titles to fit the $60 price tag
Apart from that, they seem to be partnering with indie devs for smaller scale titles. Cadence of Hyrule was not my jam, for example, but I hope we get more stuff like it.

history of macaroni and cheese
Was the mac added to the cheese, or the cheese added to the mac?

so wait is Sonic Frontiers actually enjoyable? I’m asking as someone who has never succeeded at getting into a sonic game

I'm enjoying the hell out of it, for what it's worth. It's definitely janky in spots, but I dunno, something about it is hitting the right spots in my brain.

But also I tend to like Sonic games even when they're bad so I may not be the best judge.

I did not mean to steer this thread into Canadians talking about KD but I am genuinely proud of my accident
