News Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse announced for PC and consoles, coming March 9th 2023 (UPDATE: new story trailer, see threadmarks)

Well, now that we've seen it, looks like a quality remake; very nice visuals that retain the style of the original while still looking modern.

I really hope it finally gets the recognition and love it deserves; I am curious how it will be recieved as while it is a very good game, it's also a game from 2008, and I can see it being docked points for not being as slick or frictionless as today's audiences might want.

Still, I maintain that if you go in with the right expectations its a terrific horror experience.
Yeah, looks like they took the game and ran it through the same graphics engine as MoBW to pretty up what was already there, it's honestly the best solution we could have hoped for.

Has there been any English footage yet? I'm curious to see if they're using the NoE localisation that apparently went unused.

More importantly; are the ghost hands gone when you pick up an item?

I really hope not, that was a great mechanic that really tested one's nerve, daring you to hold the button down to reach out, but be ready to pull back in an instant if a ghost popped up.
For me it an ingenius way of manifesting suspense and anxiety through gameplay.

Also hope they retain both of the original game's awesome Amano Tsukiko songs. (Zero is in the trailer, hope Noise is in there too!)

Happy to finally be able to play a game in this franchise. I avoided 5 because it's supposed to be awful, but it was also the only one available.
It's fine, but it has its fair share of problems. Personally really enjoyed my time with the game.

I still remember the ad for the game in one of those Nintendo magazines that showed it as coming soon (next month iirc) and it just never happened :(

There is anything indicating a physical EU release
Yes, the Nintendo Direct announcement. I don't know if it works the same with Nintendo of America, but in Europe, if a game is eshop only, it says so by having "Nintendo eshop" written on top, like this with Maiden of Black Water for instance :

But Mask of the Lunar Eclipse doesn't have it !

I wouldn't define 5 as awful, but surely 4 (this "new one") is WAY better
to me, best in the series

about the remastermake: it really is a step up in terms of visual quality over the original Wii version, to me this is how remastermake should be done (similarty to Xenoblade DE for Switch), when the project is not an actual remake

5 I think is still a good game, but 4 is far better and a perfect game to start with. If your a fan of PS1 style survivor horror games you should really enjoy the series.

In the Wii Edition of 2? Absolutely.

But in Maiden of Black Water they really overplayed it and it old really fast imo. To a point where I was annoyed with the mechanic.

But we can see on the website that there is only a digital version:

So... no physical release for PZ4.

Not that I have much hope, but Persona 5 Royal isn't listed as physical and there are listings on multiple websites for it.

Worst case scenario, we have to import much like Maiden, speaking of which...

Does the cartridge already come with the patch, or are they still 1.0 without English?

I've been trying to figure that out too. Really want a physical copy but without English on cart it's a deal breaker

I'm saving Maiden for my Halloween game run so I'm excited to try this as well, always wanted it on the Wii.

Edit :
Ah nevermind it needs an update, didn't realize that !! That's lame

Yup it happens sometimes, but most of the time it is accurate... And PZ5 didn't get a physical release, so I would say it will be the same for PZ4. I would be happy to be wrong. :D

Think this video nicely shows how different this looks versus the Wii original (new character models, lighting, ghost animations etc)

Damn, the Wii game already looked pretty good and this seems even better. I wonder if they will re-remake Fatal Frame 2 now?

(Seriously though, Disaster: Day of Crisis would greatly benefit from a treatment like this).

Although I already own this for Wii and won't be buying it over again, I am so excited for the rerelease as the game has a special place in my heart, but so far I have not had many others to discuss it with, as it is so inaccessible.

I look forward to finally having others to talk about it with, and I sincerely hope others find as much joy in it as I did. :)

Wow, that's some graphical improvement. Did not expect that honestly, I was bracing for a barebones HD remaster.

I had a demo disc with a bunch of games for the PS2 (remember those things?) and the first Fatal Frame was on there. I played it at about 1:45AM and I was really enjoying it. I got through the demo and realized I had to go to the bathroom. I was only a teenager at the time so I was still living with my parents. I opened the door to my room and took one step into the hall and realized how dark it was. I thought to myself, you know what, I can wait until morning. That's the only time a game has scared me enough to affect me after playing it, and I've played a hell of a lot of horror games.

message from producer Fukuya & director Shibata

Producer hints at more Fatal Frame titles coming - 'we are thinking not only about this release, but also various developments in the future'. Hopefully they do a remaster for the Wii version of 2 next and a brand new title in the series.

Surely a brand new episode is overdue

I've played all of them, even on Wii, 3DS and Wii U, and I could even think about getting THIS remaster (considering how many years ago I played it, with an English patch, on a SD console), but man...I'd love a brand new episode

Just like with Maiden of Black Water itā€™s ā€œhey casual shopper, look at this box, it has a beautiful young lady in itā€ and itā€™s a spooky game!

... Which might be part of why I completely forgot that box. They must figure that's the primary reason to buy these, which is ... unfortunate.

In any case, it's an unfortunate downgrade. Pour one out for the true coverart. It will be missed. And possibly framed on a wall or something.

yeah the cover art got a big downgrade. oh well, it's not like they're releasing a localized physical copy :/
I had skipped out on tracking down a Maiden of the Black Water physical copy because of its lacking the translations on cartridge, but, especially with Mask of the Lunar Eclipse now releasing, it's definitely still tempting.

Indeed, it's a real bummer. But I'm still ecstatic they're obviously now discussing more titles after this is coming out. My only hope is that with hopefully 2 Wii getting the next Remaster treatment that they do a physical collection for 2, 4 and 5 in one package. Or at least, that would be my hope.

I'm double dipping on this game anyway since I'm a massive fan of the series and want new entries to come out (and IV is far better than V to me), going with both PS4 and Switch. I never double dip for anything but I'm cuckoo about this series.

The OG Wii version of 4's cover art is probably the best one in the series, so it's a shame they decided to change it.

I really had hoped they got rid of the piano sections. Wasn't a fan of it on the Wii and the buttons don't particularly look like an improvement.
Also, inspired by Mr. Miyamoto... Well damn šŸ¤£
So the Asian release of FF5 doesn't have English on the cart?
Unless they've decided to include the update on the cartridge (which occasionally happens, but I'm doubtful here), the answer is no :(

Damn, it's pointless to get then.

Shame.

I'm not sure having to get an update is ever going to be considered a deal-breaker for me when it comes to getting something physical if I want to play it, like, worst case scenario is the download services get taken offline and the cart loses value but in that case I'd also lose access to the digital version and realistically that isn't going to be an issue. It's been 17 years and you can still redownload Wii software, and long term support has only become much more important since then.
