I can’t figure out how to join a friend. My wife is in the list of friends in the lobby but she’s greyed out. I’ve tried creating a room and nothing changes - she sees my character as greyed out in her list as well…
In the match menu go right or left with the D-Pad to activate the "With Friends" option

edit: ah maybe you already did. not sure then sorry

It's weird to me when people complain about Splatoon net issues because those game have consistently been great for me. Like, better than most Ninty games.

Moar overall impressions from someone who didn't click with Splatoon 2 at all.
  • Enjoying PvP is 50% finding the weapon that works for me at the particular moment. Some of them are complete doo-doo for me, but now I've found 2 that really click with me and finally allow me to start competing and developing strategies.
  • The other 50% for me has been learning to read what happens. There's so much going on visually that it's sometimes hard to parse, but the graphical tweaks have made it easier to me.
  • PvE is a hilarious take on the "zombie" trope, and despite the maps looking the same there's plenty of variation in bosses, scripting etc. to keep it engaging.
  • The key for me to really enjoying Splatoon 3 is alternating PvP, PvE and Campaign. It prevents the feeling of it getting stale.
  • This game already feels very complete and polished at launch. It's a thoroughly modern game in it's presentation and content. There's a few things they could do to speed up (and stabilise...) PvP though.
Also: a split screen mode in the future wouldn't go amiss. I'm not buying another Switch and copy to play together with my son, that's ridiculous xD .

It's so good to play a bigger EPD game again! Can't wait to finally play BotW2 in March 😏.

I beat it this morning and have played all the levels (except the special final level). As for the final boss:
+It's really cool to finally see Mr. Grizz for real after listening to him on the radio for 5 years. His dialogue was well written and he had the right amount of creepiness.
+The fight itself was unique and, while I would have preferred it to be a bit more difficult (especially the first phase), I think it's solid
+The remix of the Salmon Run themes are real bops
+Highlight though was how many little story twists there were in that final stretch (Deep Cut's motives, Cuttlefish 'death', Hugefry, Octavio coming in clutch, Mr Grizz reveal)

For the story mode as a whole, I'd say the best addition is the overworld being thematically coherent and rewarding to explore. Other improvements are the cutscenes and lil' buddy. Overall it's very solid and I'm satisfied with it.

Nintendo definitely undersold it by labeling it as a 'tutorial' especially those Squiffer target pop levels, tutorial my ass

Finally, some things I'd like to see in the future:
-Ice physics in multiplayer stages
-Mist in multiplayer stages
-A full on singleplayer Splatoon spin-off. I mean just look at the Sunken Scrolls: Progenitor Squid, Criminal goldfishes, etc. There's so much potential

How long is campaign?

Kind of amazed by good the campaign is. If I were to score it compared to 2’s. 2 would get a 6 whereas 3 is easily an 8.5 for me. Not sure exactly what they’ve changed that made it so much better but it’s such a pleasant surprise. Worth buying for it alone imo.

But one of them has a strike system and the other dosen't. I'm a bit confused about that. Is it higher risk, easier to rank up?

I can't tell yet if the different systems make one easier or more efficent to rank up than the other, aside from the pre-made factor. So the practical difference right now comes down to single matches versus series of 5-8 matches. But then you can pause mid-series and continue another time, meaning until I know more about rank points and performance rewards, I stay away from Open simply to avoid running into a 4-friends-on-voice-chat buzz saw.

  • The other 50% for me has been learning to read what happens. There's so much going on visually that it's sometimes hard to parse, but the graphical tweaks have made it easier to me.

I felt this problem. On the surface the ink mechanic makes Splatoon makes easy to read - you know how map control is divided up, where enemies are pushing, what the firing angles are, etc. - but the quick kill-times and low tick-rate combined with lots of players on Switch wi-fi mean it's often hard to discern what exactly went wrong after death. The biggest adjustment is to not play reactively, e.g. wait until you notice someone is shooting at you, but pre-empt potentially dangerous situations by constantly moving and not staying out of the ink for long unless you've got a very good idea where the nearest enemy is.

Can't believe I was able to play Salmon Run in 2 without egg-throw the last 2 years. Such a small addition but makes the experience so much better. Also, has any of us here made it to S rank?

Egg-throw is winning the race for seemingly small change with a huge and interesting impact on how situations play out. And Squid Roll and Squid Surge are currently not even close. I love the additional risk/reward calculations and team coordination, especially with how the shorelines of the new maps seem smartly designed with egg tossing in mind.

Tbh Return of the Mammalians OST was very disappointing to me coming from Octo Expansion standards (while multiplayer is the opposite, it's a lot better than in 2)

Completely agreed. It just feels like such a natural feature to have in the mode. Unlike squid roll which I can't just seem to remember to use to literally save my life at all lol.
BTW, do we expect the 2nd Splatfest to be at the end of the month?

What ultimately helped me a lot was realising Splatoon has a large hide-and-seek element to it. Unlike the arena shooters of yore that I keep banging on about, where jumping into the fray and trying to out-manoeuvre your opponent while shooting was the way to go, Splatoon is more about gathering recon and then quickly jumping in and executing the strategy.

It's paint-paint-paint at first, and hide as soon as you see an opponent. Diagnose what their weapon is, what they're currently doing, position correctly and then get in their face. Because HP is low on both sides you don't want to waste any time exposing yourself while blobbering about.

So I got the game anyway.. figured I wouldnt but I am weak.
I added everyone in the friendcode list and added my own (Belly's doesnt work though)

Played a couple of turf wars just to get the feeling again since I havnt played Splatoon in like 4 years.
Gameplay is great as expected, not sure I liked the two maps that was present at the time.

Some impression so far 1-2 hours in to the game, gameplay is as expected top notch! Still one of the most innovative shooters on the market today,
However I wish they did more with it and some stuff are really irking me and I dont get why this is still a thing 2 sequels later

  • Bad map rotation - 2 maps per 2 hours.. And I dont think those 2 maps were very good. Gonna try out next rotation a bit later.
  • Not being able to reconnect to a game, it's 2022 - this needs to be a thing.
  • not able to use y axis for thumbsticks when having motion controls, why is it locked out?

While this may be an incredibly iterative sequel, the amount of QoL changes are so vast that this absolutely feels like a worthy new entry in the series. And I haven’t even touched the campaign or tried out the card game yet. I’m happy to be back in this world. I don’t believe I played much Splatoon 2 since the Octo Expansion released.

After the question about ranking up in Series compared to Open, I dipped into Open for the first time just to gather some data and...

One win earned me 8 points.

Compared to 245 points from a 5 wins 1 loss series.

Something must be off there. Best as I can tell the difference is Series factors personal performance as tracked by medals into the points total it awards at the end of a run, while Open is a flat number. But that's a ridiculous points gap and I have a hard time believing this can be right and I'm not overlooking an important factor.

Does the Trizooka just suck or something? Feels like it’s so rare to actually get a kill with it even if I’m aiming right on someone.

Tableturf Battle is a straight copy of Bravely Default 2's B 'n D, and I mean that in the absolute best way.

For anyone who doesn't know, B 'n D is the wonderful little card game in Bravely Default 2. I sunk probably a dozen hours playing it and found it quite addicting. I collected every card and beat every NPC multiple times. I always thought the one thing that hindered replayability was no online play, and surprise, it's back in Splatoon 3.

I'm so ready to play more Tableturf Battle than actual Turf War.

Has anybody else found TableTurf Battle similar to B 'n D?

Matches are 3 minutes. While there might be a case for allowing reconnects for ranked matches that can go on a bit longer, statistically the match would be over before you could join back in.
Because of how they’ve set up the menus and matches. Other games like Overwatch can have you reconnecting to a game within 10-15 seconds.

It's just to play ranked modes with friends casually. I thought when league will come it will make even less sense, but if it's still obligatory a pair or 4 members to enter then open still has a use.

Open is the casual 1 match ranked you can play with friends and/or without worrying about your rank too much. Series is the one made for ranking up.

I'm at like 99% on three of them and I have no idea what I'm missing lol
Check the in-game map. Each area has four icons that show you collectible completion, and if you're missing those, you need to check out the green highlighted areas for secrets. Or if you have any gray striped areas (Parts Unknown), you need to traverse over them to clear them out and get the "Surveyed" mark for filling in the whole map.

I just checked mine as well and I'm in the same boat

I think it's doing the Symphony of the Night thing where we have to fill out every pixel of the map even if there is nothing there

And?

It's a feature that should be present - and it's not and that's very bad.
Developing features that make no sense in the context of the game just because of a vague sense of "i should be there" is wasting dev time that could be used for stuff that actually matters.

If reconnecting is implemented well, people should be back in the match in no time. And it's a hell of a lot better than ending the match immediately for everyone involved

Again, matches last three minutes. Preparing the game for allowing reconnecting isn't just adding two lines of code, it would require significant rewriting of the netcode to accept connections mid match, reconnect to all peers, and send the updated session data to the person reconnecting. There's a limit on how quickly you can actually pull that off. Even if it was just ~30 seconds, you've already missed one sixth of the match.

It would be a significant time investment in something than on 90% of disconnects, wouldn't help. And disconnects are still a minority of the games. By all means would be spending a significant amount of dev time on patching a statistically very rare edge case where reconnecting would still let you rejoin the game in time.

So, how's the netcode? How stable are the matches and how often have you encoutered laggy opponents?

I had my Online status set to no one. Not sure when I did that :( but that’s probably the issue.

Edit: both her and I had it set to “no one.”

Edit 2: everything works now! also haven’t seen a communication error in a bit but that’s likely a coincidence
Wait are you playing online multiplayer together on one console?

Yeah, I could see something like this work. Like left and right button of the d-pad become the vote button with 20 seconds to decide.
Should add another input (like hold + and then use the d-pad) because otherwise Switch Pro Controller users would vote forfeit instead of booyahing all the time with how bad the d-pad is

I meant to play story mode this morning, but instead I dived into Salmon Run. The ability to throw eggs is a seemingly small change that really changes up how you approach the mode, I love it.

I meant only activating the vote forfeit options when someone on your team has disconnected

When I went to install I couldn’t because I have no system storage left. I only have saves on my internal storage. What options do I have since my saves can’t be transferred to my SD card? There are no game downloads/installs on the Switch internal memory.

Don't ignore the TableTurf card game if you haven't at least given it a try. It's pretty good.

Though I have a question. When you play against the "normal" looking players around the card table, is that real time or are you playing against their decks with AI? Not sure how that works, but they are pretty challenging.

They should be AI, as online for the card game will be added in a future update

Get a bigger micro SD, archive some games you're not playing.

I wish when using motion control you could also use the right stick as well. Motion+Stick movement would feel better for me rather than one or the other.
But you can? That's the default.
