PlayStation God of War hits 19.5 million copies sold, Steam release announced

Wish better action games like DMC5 could sell as much. Guess the pathway to sales is by turning your franchise into an accessible, story-focused action game with pointless RPG elements.
not to insult anyone but yes, games with a higher skill level where the enjoyment is most out of what you can accomplish in the game by gameplay polishing your own skills are becoming a niche compared to "easier to digest" games with a heavier focus on the story

I liked the story in Dad of War, but gameplay really didnt click with me, and I liked in in 3 and "4"

Wow if Sony keeps releasing their games for pc I might just get a steam deck instead of another PS system
The point of Sony releasing Games on PC are likely
1) Late life extra squeeze of cash out of the product to maximize profits (Game Dev is becoming more and more expensive, so it makes sense to try to make as much money as possible from each game)

2) Honey trap you into getting a PS5:
Oh Man, GoW 2018 was great, I cant wait to see how the story will unfold in Ragnarok..what do you mean is PS5 exclusive??!!... errrrggg... maybe ill buy a PS5 then.
(Same can be applied to Horizon)

Totally!
This seems like a "BOTW" moment for the series, isn't it?

Nah. Imo you can't divorce the sales of Botw from the fact that it's still retailing at basically launch prices.
I take nothing from Gow2018 but it likely got a majority of those sales at either half or a third of the price from its initial release.
This is definitely valuable expansion of the brand, but it doesn't parallel Botw in my eyes considering the two different retail contexts.

One of my favorite PS4 games. I like the environment and the story even though I never played the any from the series before.

However, I must say that it’s ridiculous to shit on the game just because “it’s easier”. What year is this? Why are we still arguing having difficulty settings/easier options as bad? Not everyone has all the time to play. Just let people enjoy the game the way they want to.

Yeah, these are incredible numbers but the game has been £15 for quite some time now and I think it drops below a tenner on sale. On the flipside, I would imagine it will reach a lot more people than the sales numbers indicate since it's included for free with the PS Plus Collection on PS5. I know that's probably how I'll end up playing it.

It'll be interesting to see how the sequel does at launch and whether the latecomers and PS Plus players decide to jump in straight away this time (again, I personally wait on stuff like this because I'm not super eager and I know the price will see a steep drop). That would be more of a 'BOTW moment' I think.

Makes me wonder how much Spiderman has sold.
Also makes me wonder if SMT5 will end up on PC/other platforms at some point because it was on the same leak thing.

Yeah this is true too. Not to "console war" but BOTW would likely hit close to 35-40 mil if it had GOW2018's discounts.

I don't doubt it's higher. Perhaps 5 or so million higher. Spider-Man was a massive hit

As for SMT 5, maybe but this is ATLUS we're talking about. Persona 5 is still PlayStation exclusive, even though it'd do great elsewhere too

Exactly. Games like Bayonetta and Devil May Cry target more of a niche that's looking to replay the game to get great at combos and get higher rankings on missions whereas God of War is focused on showing the relationship between Kratos and his son alongside a mix of a lot of combat and some puzzle solving, the former of which I think it does much better than the latter. Maybe not quite as good as games that are more laser focused on combat but it has so much more to offer to appeal to people looking for stuff outside of it

Not to take away from Devil May Cry or Bayonetta, of course. Either approach is completely valid but sales show nothing negative about people whom prefer one or the other

That's perhaps true but, at the end of the day, the sales of both games are what they are. I think both Nintendo and Sony prioritized what they felt made the most sense and are more than happy with how their games did

Agreed 100%. Who knows if Nintendo decides to do a Switch Selects line down the road? BOTW will likely be there.

im a god of war 2018 hater. they cut down on bosses and enemy variety, removed jumping and pushed the camera so close you can't see what youre doing without huge arrows pointing at the bad guys. i got bayonetta to fil lthose shoes nowadays.

glad it did well though!

Sorry but I just don't see most PC gamers who play Sony games on PC, picking up a PS5 to play the sequels. These people are playing on PC for a reason. They've invested in the platform because they prefer the benefits and flexibility of PC gaming. And now, they are getting these Sony games without having to spend more money. Why run out and buy a PS5? To play the few Sony first-party games? I'm sure they'd sooner spend that money on a hardware upgrade.

Even Sony isn't expecting this. The people who do own both a PC and a PlayStation largely only buy first-party titles and ignore all the third-party releases and PS Plus, which are the real money-makers for Sony.
