I don't get it. My family group gets it like a 8,75€ each for year. And we get Animal Crossing dlc on top of that. I think it even would be worth the 40€ for individual sub for myself. I really don't get the hate. You always can go cheaper if you just want online.

I kinda think Nintendo's older back catalogue has never had less value as it does right now and that's part of the reason why this is underwhelming.

Why?
1. The Switch has an insane library. More quality games at reasonable prices than anyone could ever play. In the past, this wasn't the case and returning to previous favorites made a lot of sense for a couple bucks. But now for 5-10 dollars you can get all kinds of incredible indie games on the e-shop.

2. We've all played these games on modern hardware. For those with a nostalgic connection to these games, getting to play them on the Wii was magical. A glorious and unexpected return to childhood. But since then, they've been on the Wii. They've been on Wii U. They've been on 3ds. Most of the Nintendo audience that would be interested in these games has already played them again, and the novelty of having access to them is lost. They don't even really move the needle on hardcore forums any more like they did back in 2006-2008, where SNES Roms would get replay OTs.

3. N64 games, being early 3d games, just don't age as well as SNES games. There's only a handful worth playing, and most of us have played them half to death already. Not a huge value add.

4. Nostalgia tends to work in 15-20 year periods. When you're 25 you're nostalgic for stuff that came out when you were 5 to 10 years old. When SNES games launched on the Wii, that was exactly 15 years after the SNES. Well, 15-20 years ago was Gamecube and GBA territory, but Nintendo will absolutely not be adding GC to the service, and currently isn't adding GBA. So we're stuck outside of the prime nostalgia zone.

It's just not the killer feature it used to be, imo.
Another thing that lessens the value (at least for me) is that despite being the system that leans the most on retro and retro-style games, the Switch has the worst official d-pad options out of the three. You can’t even buy an official Joycon with a good d-pad above the analog stick for comfortable 2D gameplay in portable mode.

Oh! In that case, that actually feels pretty reasonable to me. Animal crossing DLC I would've bought anyway basically means it's N64 games for free if I'm subbed for a year.

Thanks for clearing it up for me.
Right, but if that's the way you're thinking about it it's also DLC that you're paying for yearly. You lose it when you stop subscribing, compared to the standalone one time purchase.

Hello everyone new user here...been lurking for a bit on resetera forums and since I couldn't join there because of the email thing....this new place is great for me... now on to the topic...

No wonder they didn't tell us the price at the Direct...they new it would get backlash.... no way I'm paying $50...a DLC I don't care about? a console I don't care about? (sorry sega fans, I'd rather get another Nintendo console there... GBA... GCN.....even regular GameBoy....or even Virtual Boy XD) I hope they change the price or at least give us the option to get it without the Animal Crossing DLC.... at 30-35 dollars....but this isn't Microsoft or Sony....so...they probably won't...

I don't see what Microsoft and Sony have to do with this. I don't think there's a comparable situation with them.

But they won't, no. The DLC is likely there to increase the value because the cost needed to be that high for licensing reasons with the third party content. A lot of this money is seemingly going to SEGA, MS/Rare, etc.

Didn't Microsoft try to raise the price on one of their services?...games with gold or something like that... Maybe I'm remembering it wrong...but they got a lot of backlash and in the end the changed their decision... same with Sony and the shutting of the PSP and PS3 online stores... (for a while at least)... My point is I don't see Nintendo reacting like that...even if they got a lot of backlash I can see them keeping the price no matter what.....

this is gonna end up costing me less...everyone is looking for a cheaper way, got two friends asking about joining my existing family plan already...so will be going from having my wife and i on it, to a bunch of friends....will be cheaper.

what do you mean the offer you all or nothing? I don't have a Sony console so not sure what you mean
What i mean is that Sony offers you the whole package for 60 € a year or nothing at all. There aren't tiers, they have never reduced the PS plus price ever, they don't listen to their users. In this matter, Nintendo has nothing to learn from them.

Thats also unfortunate because if you were interested in just the N64 games you are now paying extra for those Sega Genesis games. Personally think the best route would have been to offer subscription tiers.

I see....well I don't know the conversion rate but looking at the PS Plus website it says 39.99 dollars a year...that's cheaper than the NSO+Expansion Pack now.....

Wtf, this is too much and their online still sucks (specially Smash)...

The pricing is awful if you don't care about the Animal Crossing expansion. And if you do care about the expansion and don't want to lose access to it after a year, you'll have to keep resubbing.

Hmm. The price is a bit too high, and much more than I expected, of course. I am part of the problem, though, because I'm still interested.

Microsoft tried to raise the price of their existing service without adding anything to it, by double for the cheapest plan. The equivalent move for Nintendo would've been raising the base NSO to $40/$70 and not even bothering with the expansion pack content.

Nintendo is at least providing more content in exchange for the higher price and is making it optional. That's far better than what MS attempted to do, though yes, MS backed off.

I think Rare is part of the price hike, and they could end up being a substantial part of the N64 library on NSO.

But Expansion Pack is a tier. Do you mean more?

PS Plus is $59.99 a year in the US.

I am not sure if this info is available or not but will the N64 online games like mario kart have some sort of matchmaking, like can I play with random people or only those on my friends list?

I have the website open here right now. It's 59.99 € a year.

And that's the only option, wich is my point. There isn't any other tier.

Sorry about that, yes I did mean more.
More options is never a bad thing.

Assuming it's like NES and SNES, there is no matchmaking. You invite someone onto the app and they essentially become player 2 (or 3 or 4)

Going by the SNES games that support online multiplayer it’ll only be with friends afaik.

Assume friends only. I imagine they would've announced otherwise since it would be a major feature over regular NSO.

That's so weird... I'm looking at the US website of PS PLUS and yes, it says 59.99.... but the spanish... or chilean website to be more precise says 39.99 for 12 months...

Also, I see you point, yes it's not the same as the microsoft situation...my point was more that at least there's some precedent of microsoft backing off... unfortunately I don't see Nintendo doing anything similar...

Ah I was hoping that wouldn't be the case - thanks for the responses

Family Plan stays winning; that's my thought at the end of the day. Going from $4.38 to $10 a year is a no brainer for me.

I had a family plan initially but honestly shaking down 8+ friends for money every year just isn't that fun. So I dunno what I'll do.

I agree that Nintendo's less likely to back off, but they also aren't facing nearly the same level of backlash, and for good reason. The minimum you could pay for 1 year of online play with Microsoft's proposed increase was $120. That's just criminal.

I get wishing the Expansion Pack was cheaper, but all you can really do is find people to join a family group (which takes it from a rip-off to a steal with a full group) or just don't buy it to send the message. Personally, I'm looking forward to Nintendo's quarterly update to get an idea of how popular the plan is.

It's not 8+, it's 7 tops.

As someone who runs a plan, I get it, but a day or two of minor inconvenience isn't much to me.

I mean even just splitting it with one trustworthy friend is a better deal than buying your own

As i understand it, if i upgrade to the new NSO tier, the Animal Crossing DLC is not permanent? If this is really the case, i see no value in upgrading my NSO subscription. I rather buy the Animal Crossing DLC on my own. If the N64 Controller gets good reviews, i will buy one later for Retroarch. i Have already bought N64 games on different systems. Forcing everyone to rent the Animal Crossing DLC is really weired.

Yeah for me its just a matter of sending one message to a group chat and saying "react when you've paid on venmo"

Everyone takes care of it quick once one person kicks it off...

It's expensive but it's exactly what I expected. I didn't know people were expecting any less than that with Sega and other thirds involved (Konami bringing Castlevania to the service, with apparently more to come like some Megaman games)
I understand that it's too much for some though, definitely.
But I don't think the price is surprising at all. Like the OG NSO, it'll feel more worth it after a while, when other services will be available (more consoles, more DLC, etc).

What is being forced about it? You can still buy the DLC if you'd like to tho.. but I don't plan on cancelling my sub anytime soon so there's no worry about it not being permanent.

Correct.

Animal Crossing is being thrown in to add value because they know it's expensive and for no other reason. It was easier for them to add their own content for value than to negotiate the licensing fees for all the third party content down.

If the pricing is good or bad seems very dependant on your current situation.

If were definitely getting that AC DLC regardless of what happened it seems a great deal.

If you weren’t it’s a steep increase for what are now very old games - but (and I’m in the UK), it’s still ‘only’ £3 each month.

This strikes me as something in six months when (/if) more games come on, possibly more consoles and more DLC for games it may seem like far better value. But it’s not a good way to announce it and take the shine off what was a very strong AC direct.

Yup. Heck it’s why when I just decided to do it today I just decided to do it in Eshop cards since that makes it easy

I was trying to hold out from charging last month until we got more pricing info and 4 of them still paid me on their own lol.

Huh, yeah. It works out to a $10 code, I hadn't noticed. That might come in handy for me next year.

It‘s not to expensive, but I just don‘t like how Nintendo structures those Services. I would rather like to have the option to add those retro consoles as single packs to a base nso subscription (online) or either pay full price for the whole thing. I don‘t care that much for genesis (sorry) and honestly also not for like 90% of the NES/SNES games playing online.

Also it is nice that they include the Animal Crossing DLC, but it‘s also kinda strange. We don‘t know if this will happen for future games too and what the future of NSO looks like in general.

NSO still seems like some last minute solution with no clear direction. Just to have some kind of subscription to please investors. I mean it even has a name that sounds like a project title.

was expecting 40 bucks and thought most people would find that tough to swallow (but i'd be okay with it).

50 has me thinking there will be more platforms added to the expansion pack part later for free, instead of continuously updating the price with more add-ons. so if you have the expansion pack, you'll get game boy/color and game boy advance at some point with no additional cost.

I personally don’t get the furore over the price. It’s about £3 a month to get access to N64 and Mega Drive games - assuming the libraries get updated with new games every now and again like the NES and SNES ones did, I think that’s more than reasonable. I certainly prefer that than the prices they used to charge for N64 games on the VC.

The Animal Crossing DLC is just an added bonus to me - I do agree that that if you’re not interested in the N64 or Mega Drive games, then it’s probabaly not worth it. But at least you still have the option of paying the lower price if you still want to play online.

What is being forced about it?

It's in the menu, there is no way to option out. It's forced on you, if you want it or not.

It's like french fries, i never buy a burger in a menu because i hate french fries and they taste like shit at most fast food places.
