Reviews Nintendo Switch Sports | Review Thread

Bowling also gives you a high degree of control over the ball, and I was quickly bowling 150-point games without breaking a sweat. But the real challenge is in the Special mode, which throws increasingly difficult obstacles in the path of your strike and will give even the best Wii bowlers a run for their money. It also gives you and up to three friends the option to play simultaneously, so everyone doesn’t have to sit around and wait for each person to finish a frame – the result is chaotic and fittingly fun. Unfortunately, the 100-pin bowling mode from Wii Sports Resort is nowhere to be found.

That's a bummer.

They will focus on more traditional games.

Labo didn't suddenly take away Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, etc. etc. This is an awfully selfish attitude. My word.
Heaven forbid a game publisher branches out sometimes and appeals to a different market than the traditional one.

EDIT: Anyway, I'll wait for player impressions, but Sports doesn't seem too appealing at launch for me. I'm most interested in Golf, and that isn't happening till the fall... :/

Hopefully, I always have the hot take that these types of games is ehat led to the Wii U. My wish is for the market to reject them. They already rejected Labo, which was a good thing to happen.
I like that Nintendo offers that variety and the type of game you don't get elsewhere. They've learned the lesson that they need normal/vote software at the forefront but there's still room for other stuff.

I enjoyed labo vr, I genuinely think it was a good idea at the wrong time (too early in the switch life, it wasn't really selling to family's yet) and it'd do a lot better now

I just meant, which is why I said unless the gameplay fumbles (which seems it does) this type of game would never review too hot even if it had all the content of Resort. IMO
I wouldn't say the gameplay fumbles, people seem more than fine with the base gameplay, its just content lite like most switch sports games are at launch. Plus reviewers lacked online which has a progression system

oh god, what year is it? i don't see how anyone can look at switch's lineup and then see this one game as a sign that nintendo is switching back to the wii days of casual games.

The Metacritic score doesn't matter to me really. There's loads of fantastic games rated in the 70s. Golf Story is rated 78 and people here are bemoaning this games poor scores.

In saying that, I'll wait until they add more sports to the mix.
The original Wii Sports only has 76 on Metacritic and it's considered an all-time classic, so I really don't think the score matters here lol.

This is, undoubtedly, a take.

The polygon review seems to be one of the most positive so far.

This truly no different than NIMBYism. Get some perspective, please. My 5 year old adores Labo, and I hope Nintendo puts out more content like that to appeal to everyone.

Any excuse for Nintendoomed.

Good Lord the negativity in this thread.

I mean I understand Storres point, if ur a fan that doesnt care about Switch Sports April-May Nintendo has 0 games for you.
You could say the same about a lot of months though - if you don't like Pokemon, Nintendo had nothing for you in January-February. Doesn't mean that the next console will only have Pokemon games.

If Nintendo isn't going to to super deep with each game by adding modes, at least add more sports to give more variety.
It sounds like a lot of that progression is tied into the online modes which weren't available during the review window. Makes these reviews useful if you only plan to play offline single player (...why) or offline local multiplayer.

Anyway it seems like fun base gameplay and hopefully online progression will make it feel even better. The datamined content should bolster it even more since I think Nintendo intends to support the game in the long term

I've read totally reliable reports about Zelda BOTW2 being not only postponed, but cancelled, in favor of Switch Sport +, to be sold with a dedicated peripheral that will implement better headshots for the football minigame

I mean offline single player was still an enjoyable experience in Wii Sports Resort and had more depth than this seems to have, so I don't see why it's questionable to wonder why people would play the game single player offline

Which is what I’m waiting to see as I’ll only be playing online since I have no one to play locally. My wife may play a couple of matches while drinking and that’s it lol

You're allowed to have whatever opinions you want

but man Labo owned

Has this game been leaked yet?

Though all that's worth looking into is what are all the other things you can unlock for your characters, and what other kinds of animals can you make your Sportsmates.

The fuck is this? Labo is great.

"Nintendo Switch Sports/Party Game | Review Thread"

"This game has fun and polished core gameplay but the lack of meaningful content and progression stops it from reaching greatness."

Name a more iconic duo.

I'd put a tenner on Mario Strikers following the exact same pattern.

I also think people thinking this will be a commercial flop are vastly underestimating the game. Casual games do big numbers, especially ones with nostalgia tied to it and promises of more to come which will make it enticing in the holidays(which is when these kinds of games really shine). I expect it to be a 10 million seller at minimum

Last couple of party games buck the trend I argue(MPSS definitely has a good amount of content), will agree on the sports games front though,

The issue is mainly with Camelot due to the small amount of staff, if they can just shore up or get more time on the game I imagine they will release way better since usually the games end up being pretty good when all is said and done.

Plus it is only a $40/$50 game. That will help overall sales.

I also don’t understand why they had to put it out so quickly. Golf I guess they probably intended to roll out later, but the Soccer stuff is weird.
This is new Nintendo for a lot of their online/service type games. Unfortunate, but the way it is.

I appreciate that Nintendo Life is holding off on a review. Very silly to put a number on this if Online, Customization, etc. aren't live.

That point still doesn’t make sense under any microscope you put it under. Like actively wanting this to fail or saying the market rejected Labo (still sold well).

As others have already aptly stated “what year is it”

I think Labo gets unfairly given slack because of how it sold, but the issue is that it is being compared to video games and you can’t compare it with Mario or Kirby or God of War.

It’s a STEM toy really. And it honestly sold on par with how most STEM toys sell.

Some fault lies with Nintendo of course as they even didn’t take into consideration on the actual potential of sales for STEM toys. But it’s a really cool set of them that encourage creativity and logical thinking.

I'm expecting this to sell better than 1-2-Switch, which sold 3 million units lifetime. (Or 400k above Metroid Dread)

Better word of mouth, mature install base, and nostalgia are all going in its favor.

It will sell more than 3M in the first month alone.

Even if this sold exactly 0 copies (and I don't think it will), Nintendo won't stop making their yearly "blue ocean" title. Never.

Exactly. I'll be shocked if this game doesn't turn out to be a success, regardless of the lack of options compared to Wii Sports or Wii Sports Resort.

I never understood how they decided to go from like a dozen sports in Resort to 6 here, while seemingly not really fleshing out any one of them to any degree. Also there's no Baseball?

I think it was unlikely for them to come out of the gate with 12 sports, for various reasons, but I'm also a bit surprised that something like chanbara doesn't even have the same modes as Resort. Makes it appear even more barebones.

yeah, this is going to be an easy 10+ million seller.

This thread went places.

I think this game will do well. I think it'll be a long tail sort of game that will sell well during the holidays and into next year. People loved Wii Sports and we're at about the right time for Nintendo to capitalize on that nostalgia. I could see Nintendo making an expansion pass for it, too.

We have 2 non-golf sports datamined as well as big customization updates, so if not an expansion pass consistent support similar to a splatoon since this is an online focused game with a ranked mode

Imagine the suffering of having no releases catered to you in 2 months, I don't think I'd survive such pain.

Sure both Wii Sports and Resort (and I assume club but I never player it) have stuff for someone to do by themselves, but again, why would someone be looking to get this game for it's offline single player content? I get being disappointed because it is, but passing on the game completely because of it? This game lives or dies on how fun multiplayer is with friends and family locally and online, the latter of which is unknown until Friday.

? I'm buying Switch Sports day 1 just that I understand being disappointed with Nintendo schedule from Kirby until June , it's something that has happened multiple times in Switch (and any console really) lifespan.
