Toruzz, who previously made the amazing Super Mario Land 2 DX, has just released a colourization hack for the first Super Mario Land! Toruzz has also added a Hard Mode and the ability to play as Luigi with his The Lost Levels physics.
Actually, this is the 2.0 version of the patch - the previous release had some major collision and frame rate issues. This version also adds the ability to use an SMB-style Mario sprite (whereas in the previous version you were forced to use the new custom sprites, of which I'm personally not a fan).
By the way, Toruzz is also working on Kaeru no Tame DX and another hacker released Metroid 2 DX some years ago. A full list of colorization patches by various hackers can be found here, but be wary that their quality is inconsistent (the recent Wario Land hack could be improved in a lot of areas, IMHO).
