PlayStation Sony State of Play announced for March 9th, 2022 2 PM PST / 5 PM EST / 11 PM CET "Focusing on Japanese Developers" ~20 minutes

Not watching because these are usually nothingy for me, but just checked the announcements on Twitter and "Not Final Fantasy Tactics" does have me shaking a bit!

For a state of play focusing on Japanese games that was quite shit. Those new Square games look pretty bad.
Not a single one of FF16, FF7R or RE4 Remake showing up is just depressing.

Honestly... so much of Square's recent and future output is looking like the "games that foreshadow a buyout." And I'm more excited for Forspoken than I imagine most people are. It's hard to give a reason why, it just does lol

Doesn't help that Square Enix has seemingly forgotten how to name things.

Still a decent SoP but I personally have no interest in anything there but the Returnal Update... for when I, eventually, get round to playing that again. Great that it's free, though!

None of those were realistically gonna show up in a SoP this sudden.

Ghostwire, Diofield and Valkyrie Elysium look fun. Everything else… eh. One of the better paced State of Plays though.

Yes.

Absolutely zero of the core members of tri-Ace or the Valkyrie Profile series are working on the title.

Even with low expectations, that was pretty dire. The only thing of any interest there for me was Trek to Yomi

...meh to be honest. couple of decent announcements, but it's clear sony doesn't really care about these SoPs, anything big is going to be saved for other shows.

Diofield Whatever is coming to Switch!

I cannot remember the full name lol.

EDIT: DioField Chronicle, excuse me.

Also no way in hell that TMNT collection doesn't hit Switch.

Yes DIOField confirmed for switch, also its not notfiremblem or notgtrinaglestrategy, this definitely is notGrowlanser

I guess Square realized they hadn't made a sequel to any Enix games that aren't Dragon Quest in a while and decided to spend a grand total of 5 bucks on making new ones. This and Star Ocean both look really bad.

Please leave my poor Grandia alone.

I'm guessing that Exoprimal is the final name for Snappers (Codenamed "SHIELD") from the Capcom leak.

Was originally planned to release to around now, with a limited release a few months before.

Is Exoprimal exclusive ? That seems like the type of game that would benefit from being multiplat (but also would be typical Sony to buy exclusivity)

No matter what you think of the games themselves, it's pretty clear that Sony sees State of Plays as "the place to relegate all the stuff we don't want clogging our limelight." IIRC the last time a major first-party Sony game got featured prominently in a general State of Play was in 2019 with the TLoU:p2 Story Trailer.

It definitely leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. Like they're afraid of their own darlings being seen prominently at the same events as the "riff-raff," of lower-budget third party titles.

Getting those Nintendo Direct Mini Partner Showcase vibes (which is what SoP effectively has always been)

Diofield Chronicle is some employee at Square Enix going “fine, I’ll make my own Triangle Strategy! … with blackjack! And hookers!”

And yeah, if this was meant to sell PS5 in Japan or meant to indicate that SIE still has a firm grip on the Japanese development scene, it was a miss.

If Cowabunga Collection isn't coming to all platforms I'll eat my hat.

Surprised to see Valkyrie Elysium is not coming to Switch. Doesn't look like it's pushing the limits and it's done by Soleil (the recent Samurai jack game). I fail to understand Square's exclusivity policy.

I think this SoP is kind of showing that, outside of the big titles from big developers that sell well in the west, PlayStation is no longer attracting Japanese devs like the brand used since they’ve shifted focus off the Japanese market

I think this shows more that Jap devs cant rely on Playstation anymore as their only plataform so now they are forced to release their games on multiple plataforms
