This game is incredible

I haven't felt this engaged and excited playing a Pokemon game in a long, long time

Makes me feel like how I used to as a kid, playing Silver and then Sapphire. Brings me back

There is a greater sense of wonder and discovery here

Us, game mechanics (wandering around, sneak behind pikemon, catch them and even freely move the character and the camera during battles) are really a step forward for the series

I’ve done 2 and 2/3 areas and I’m going back way more often than I’m going forwards because I know I’ve missed so much content/Pokémon.
That's why I can't move forward, because I don't want to miss content, and because I find it so satisfying to do all missions and side-quests.

Does anyone have a source for this art in high quality? I've been dying to use it as wallpaper for my phone

was taking a short break and guess what little guy I found wandering the Obsidian Fieldlands at night

Jesus what is the shiny rate in this game? My friend found four today, three from an outbreak but one full odds
I've found one (silcoon, lol) and it's the only shiny I've ever found in my entire life, and I've played every Pokemon game at least once. Not sure if that just speaks to my terrible usual luck or that this game has higher shiny chance (probably both)

Me: Welp, no more going off the track to find new areas with newly unlocked ride Pokemon

Also me post-Sneasler: Time to explore all the areas again but Nezuko style!

Clock ticking at 25 hours, while we continue exploring around. Which itself lead to a more active Unown and wisps search 😅.

This game is pretty chill about letting you go into areas you're technically not "supposed" to be in with a bit of finagling.

Just caught a lvl 41 non-alpha Happiny and Machoke in the first area through Wyrdeer shenanigans

This game is so much fucking fun, lord. Zelda-style wisp (korok) and balloon popping mini games?! Whew.

20 hours in (star rank 7), and just finally entered the second area for the first time. Lol, this game is gonna take me 100+ hours.
Now that's impressive lol. I love how open-ended it is progression-wise!

Not sure if you're there yet, but there's another really cool find-em-all puzzle quest that's been super fun: Unown.

I got killed by a Roselia. A ROSELIA. Blacked out and everything.

The challenge level of this game has been just perfect.

Edit: Damn, lost the Razor Claw I just picked up too!

I think the game is fine… I’m definitely not loving it as much as some of you others though. I find the game is so aggressively ugly it actually discourages exploration - everything looks the same and I don’t care to explore too much. The restrictive bag space is a shame too, they really should’ve just made it unrestricted because I’m always up against the limit.

The catching and battling is good, and I’ve really enjoyed the boss battles. But yeah. This is the first time in a while I’ve really thought mediocre visuals are really detracting from the product and it’s a shame.

aggressively ugly ... mediocre visuals
I feel like the game unfortunately needs the player's imagination to do a lot of the heavy lifting. Some seem to feel inspired by the exploratory research-based gameplay and have their imaginations sparked, and some just... dont. And unfortunately cannot get past the graphics.

I would personally however not call this game "aggressively ugly"

Yeah I dunno I think there’s a limit to how far you can stretch graphics vs. gameplay and this is definitely pushing it.

Pound for pound (like, accounting for the era and platform they’re released on) I think this might be the ugliest first party game Nintendo has ever released.

Just ran into my second shiny of the game-Rufflet! I didn't hear the shiny noise and almost missed this little guy, but thankfully I noticed his brown color before I passed him buy! He was full odds too, so that was cool. My first shiny-a Wurmple I named Beautinan, was also full odds!

Ehh. Some parts of Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl look downright awful (the rainy forest section). Xenoblade on handheld is super low resolution. The wild area in Sword/Shield looks miles worse (although the other parts of the game look fine/good). Fire Emblem Three Houses looks rough from what I've seen.

IMO, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon DX looks awful. I despise that artstyle. So that takes my pick for worst looking Switch game.

Really want to play this, but I'm still trying to wrap up my playthrough of Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. I could have been done with it in time to play Arceus at launch, but I had the bright idea of attempting a 100% run. Most likely picking Oshawott for my starter when I do get a chance to play it.

Could someone please tell me or hint in a non spoilery way what's the way to obtain the other starters? Every single time I've googled a question I've been blatantly spoilt about something lol. Thanks!

Not even close. Not to start a massive argument, but there are much worse artstyles and uglier games they've released in the past even accounting for the platform, like Fire Emblem Shadow dragon or Metroid Prime Federation force.

Look at those ugly ass battle graphics in Shadow dragon, crikey.

I'm really enjoying the game. I haven't progressed that much because I think I just really like exploring and chucking poke balls at unsuspecting Pokemon. Was able to catch a couple alpha Pokemon that way! Also, it's pretty fun to recover people's lost items.

It's not even the Switch first party game with the biggest amount of technical issues released so far.

When thunder goes boom and storm in circle, starter Pokémon you shall find. Maybe, if luck.

You can get the two starters you didn't pick in the post game. No way to get them before that (aside from someone trading them to you).

Oh, something that made me really smile super wide the other day was when I cam across some wild Aipom. They came up to me and started posing and dancing for me! I had just assumed that all Pokémon fell into one of three categories - 1) don't care about my presence, 2) run away as soon as they see me or 3) want to attack me as soon as they see me. Aipom was the first one I saw that actively came up to me and tried to get my attention. I love that.

Same goes for Petil and Bidoof actually. Also Bibarel somehow has varying reaction to the player from time to time. I swear it was super friendly to me at the first area except one obvious case, but it becomes hostile in the third area. I'm thinking weather or daytime as the factor for this, but I'll re-check to make sure.
Edit: meanwhile Mukrow, Tediursa or Roselia always try their best to gang up on me, possibly with their alpha evolution added into the mix ...

Oh that's interesting about Bibarel! I haven't come across any wild Petilil yet so haven't seen what they do. Well, I think I saw some in the distance at one point but I didn't go over to them. Bidoof kind of just stares at me so I had that in the "doesn't care about my presence" camp.

One after the other, I just unlocked the mount in the fourth area, hit level 50 with my starter, caught my 100th Pokemon, and hit star rank 5. Still having a blast with this game. I was negative at first, but I’m really warming up to the battle system. It’s fast paced in one on one fights so you can do what you want to do and move on, but it has particular depth in the rift battles when multiple Pokemon gang up on you especially when you have set goals for yourself (like capturing a specific monster, keeping everyone alive, and avoiding item use). I think the battle system and the game in general just really works in a way Pokemon never has before because there are so many potential goals laid out and driven by you happening at once.

Ok spoilers but this battle with all those
phases with Volo and 2 forms of Girantina is hard AF

I have got a post-game question for which I can't find the answer online.

Does the "Seek Out All Pokémon" quest entail catching them all or merely seeing them all (in other words, having them registered on the Pokedex)?

I had something similar yesterday. I had an outburst of Mr. Mimes and when I tried to catch them, they would all make a shield into my direction, so my balls bounced right off. I thought that was a super cool detail!

Oh yeah I forgot about that! The first time I saw them from a distance I saw them making the shields, and then when I tried to throw a ball at it and it bounced off I had a nice chuckle. Also love that its resting animation is like from the Detective Pikachu movie where it looks like it's sitting on an invisible chair.

You know, I have a very, very minor nitpick with this game.

It's the key item jingle.

In the main games, it's a fuller track. Very roughly described as five little portions. Do dodo - Do dodo - Do dodo - Do dodo - Do. PLA cuts that down to three and I always expect and hope for the five and it never happens. It's just the three and it sounds like the jingle ends prematurely and with less buildup.

Ah, sound design.

Never cared for Pokemon - I dislike the idea of capturing wild animals and forcing them to fight - but BotW2 is taking so long that I'm kinda considering it because of the comparisons people have been making.

It's probably really hard to quantify, but as someone who loves exploring in BotW and can't get enough of the soothing sound and visual design I'm wondering how much of that experience is in here.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend PLA to you. Although there is exploring and somewhat soothing sound and visual design, discovering Pokemon and their habitat is a major part of the sensation of exploring.
The openness is great for a Pokemon game, but I don't think it reaches BOTW's sense of wonder at all!

You definitely have that, and exploration is normally rewarded, but you don't get the breathtaking vistas from BOTW. Having said that, I do enjoy the vistas even when I see the water texture from afar in a grid disposition. It's a good exploration game, albeit smaller than BOTW.
